Apple unlikely to sell over 450,000 MacBooks in 1H 2015

Although Apple’s new MacBook looks extremely promising thanks to its ultra-thin design and high quality display, its sales will not be high, according to a media report. The demand for PCs remains rather low and there are slowdowns in mass production of retina-class display for the laptop.

Apple will not sell more than 450 thousand of MacBook 12” laptops in the first half of the year, reports DigiTimes web-site citing data from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Besides weak demand for PCs in the first half of the year, there has been a slowdown in Retina display production from the two main panel suppliers LG Display and Samsung Display.

So far, Quanta Computer, Apple’s manufacturing partner, has assembled 160 thousand MacBook laptops using panels from Samsung Display. Mass production is expected to pick up in April, when LG Display will start producing 120 thousand displays for the device per month.

The new Apple MacBook is based on dual-core Intel Core M processor “Broadwell-Y” with Intel HD Graphics 5300. The system features 12” retina-class IPS display with 2304*1440 resolution. The latest MacBook is equipped with 8GB LPDDR3 memory, 256GB or 512GB PCIe solid-state storage, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 3.1 type-C port and so on. The laptop weighs just around 920 grams. Pricing of the notebook starts at $1299.

Apple did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: While the Apple MacBook notebook is clearly revolutionary, given the fact that its performance will be relatively low due to usage of Core M processors, demand for the laptop will be limited. Far not all people would sacrifice performance for ultimate mobility.
