Samsung, LG have special teams working on displays for Apple’s products

After Apple and Samsung Electronics dropped all lawsuits against each other outside the U.S., business ties between the two companies seem to be getting stronger. The South Korean conglomerate recently formed a standalone team of approximately 200 employees who will work exclusively on displays for Apple’s devices. LG Electronics also has a separate Apple-focused group within the company.

One of the key advantages of Apple’s mobile devices, such as iPhone smartphones and iPad media tablets, are high-quality retina class screens. For example, the latest Apple iPhone 6 features IPS displays with the so-called dual-domain technology for more accurate colours (full sRGB reproduction support is claimed) and wider viewing angles. The company’s premium laptops also feature advanced retina-class displays. Besides, Apple is the only company in the world to offer an all-in-one PC with 5K (5120*2880) display resolution.

Since Apple has very special requirements when it comes to displays, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics have special teams that develop monitors exclusively for Apple and are only allowed to share information about Apple business within the group, reports Bloomberg news-agency.

“The new exclusive team for Apple implies that the relationship between Samsung and Apple has improved,” said Jerry Kang, an analyst at Englewood, Colorado-based researcher IHS Inc. “This also suggests that Samsung Display will win screen orders from Apple, such as for the Apple Watch.”

Apple is probably the largest display panels customer of both Samsung Display and LG Display. Therefore, it is not completely surprising that the two companies have special teams focused on needs of their biggest client.

It remains to be seen is whether Apple will get exclusive display technologies from the two companies.

KitGuru Says: While Apple uses proper displays on mobile and high-end devices, many of the company’s entry-level products, such as MacBook Air, have very outdated screens. It would be great if Samsung or LG helped Apple to finally install high-quality displays on its relatively inexpensive products.
