Sharp fail Apple approval for iPad 3 screen production

Sharp have been removed from the Apple iPad 3 panel production list as they failed to pass the Apple approval process for mass production. Reports are circulating in the Far East that LG Display and Samsung Electronics will be the two partners supplying LCD screens for Apple's iPad 3 tablet.

A report in the Korea Electronic Times Internet News says “Sharp has competed with Samsung Electronics and LG Display over the development of display panels for the iPad 3, but reportedly failed to pass Apple's approval process for mass production. Sharp has worked on developing high resolution panels on the basis of oxide semiconductor TFTs.”

Earlier reports indicated that Apple were going to replace their IPS displays with those using IGZO technology from Sharp.

Apple plans to secure 65 million LCD panels for the iPad 3 this year alone. Samsung Electronics and LG Display are said to be producing over 5 million LCD screens just for the iPad 3 launch.

Kitguru says: We predict the iPad 3 launch will be much bigger than the previous one.
