First weekend iPhone 6 sales top 10 million units, new record set

Apple on Monday said that it has sold over 10 million iPhone 6 units in three days after the devices were launched last Friday. The record sales were conditioned by broad geographical availability of the new smartphones as well as the fact that many customers were eager to get iPhones with big displays.

“Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend, and we couldn’t be happier,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin. While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible.”

As reported earlier this month, demand for the new iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus smartphones exceeds supply. Many of those, who pre-ordered the latest smartphones from Apple will only get their devices next month.

Apple’s iPhone 6 features a 4.7” display with 1334*750 resolution, whereas the iPhone 6 Plus comes with a 5.5” screen with 1920*1080 resolution. The novelties are powered by all-new A8 application processor and iOS 8 operating system. The latest smartphones sport new cameras, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, up to 150Mb/s 4G/LTE and other innovations.

Last year Apple sold nine million iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c smartphones in the first weekend of avaialbility. The first weekend sales of the previous-generation handsets included sales in China. At present China is absent from the iPhone 6 launch markets.

Market analysts believe that the new iPhone 6 smartphones are going to become the most successful iPhones ever thanks to large screens and new software.

“iPhone 6/6+ is well-positioned to deliver record NTM iPhone unit sales, given the favorable combination of competitive, market and iOS installed base dynamics,” said Tim Arcuri, an analyst with Cowen & Co., reports Tech Trader Daily.

KitGuru Says: Given that Apple has managed to sell 10 million iPhone 6 units in the first weekend without launching them in China, it is safe to say that the demand for the new smartphones greatly exceeds that for their predecessors a year ago.
