Edifier recently introduced its latest speaker set, the QR65 desktop active monitors. These speakers offer a unique blend of acoustic expertise, Lumia light effects, and TurboGaN fast-charging capabilities, designed to cater to a wide range of users.

The QR65 has already won a few prestigious awards, including the Visual Grand Prix 2024 and VGP 2024 Gold Medal awards. The QR65 incorporates sophisticated acoustic architecture, which enables it to deliver rich and full-bodied sound. With 2.75″ mid-low drivers, an aluminium alloy diaphragm, and long-throw construction, the speakers can produce powerful bass frequencies and clear mids.

The QR65 also delivers precise high-frequency performance thanks to 1.25″ silk diaphragm dome tweeters calibrated by Edifier. These tweeters result in crisp and bright trebles that stand out above even the most “bass-full” mixes. The speakers are housed in an MDF shell featuring dedicated acoustic chambers to segregate amplification components, resulting in decreased resonance, signal loss, and distortion.

Edifier's MazeTube Bass Reflex Channels and TurbMuff Air Noise Suppression Technology help to decrease unwanted acoustic resonance. The QR65 has two machine-tooled aluminium supports that lift the speakers, eliminating unwanted vibrations and channelling sound towards the top when placed on a desk. To complement the audio experience, the QR65 features 3D lighting effects via TempoAbyss technology (infinity mirror). A button on the side controls 11 preset light effects, and the ConneX app offers an extra ‘customise your own' option, offering 16 million conceivable combinations.

The Hi-Res Audio and Hi-Res Audio Wireless-certified QR65 uses LDAC and has an end-to-end audio process flow that supports high-resolution audio up to 24 bit/96 kHz. It also has USB and Line-In inputs and a subwoofer output connector. The Edifier QR65 speakers are now available for £329.99.

KitGuru says: These speakers might be a bit too pricey for most users looking for a pair of desktop speakers. Still, for those for whom money is no object, the QR65 might be worth considering if they deliver on Edifier's claims.

Considering I've been running  a set of Razer Mako speakers for the past few years, it's obvious I'm a fan of odd shaped sound setups. With that in mind, my interest is certainly peaked by the Edifier Predator 2.1 speaker system which comes heavily inspired by an unnamed sci-fi universe antagonist. Can you take a guess who?

“Where's my royalty cheque?”

But on to the speakers themselves. According to Edifier they have a “one of a kind,” 2.1 system, using a five inch subwoofer combined with two satellite speakers, made up of a two inch front-firing driver and two inch passive radiator. Connectivity is through a 3.5mm auxiliary and bass is adjustable along with master volume.

editferpredator

In-case I missed anything, here's the feature list:

  • Downward firing 5 inch subwoofer and 2 inch front firing full-range driver in each satellite
  • 2 inch passive radiator in each satellite for enhanced audio output
  • Angled satellites for enhanced sound projection
  • Auxiliary input port for versatile connectivity to external devices
  • Master volume and on/off dial located on the top of the subwoofer with blue halo indicator light
  • Separate bass adjustment control for bass output
  • All speaker drivers are magnetically shielded
  • Universal 100V-240V power supply

The Edifier Predator's are priced at £59.99 and can currently be found at Curry's and PC World and soon at several online retailers.

Look out for a review here soon.

Microlab is a dedicated acoustics and computer peripherals producer, and since its formation in 1998 they have solely concentrated on producing high quality speakers. Peter Larsen is their designer and chief consultant. We have high hopes the FC360 will perform well, especially after our positive experiences last year.

Previously we have taken a look at Microlab's Solo 6C Speakers and we were impressed with the quality, for the cost. Today is the turn of a more traditional looking 2.1 speaker system. They are effectively aimed at the everyday computer user … those of us who love to watch films, play games and enjoy their music.

The FC360 are not a dramatically styled product, they are rather understated with a simple black, box like design. This does mean they will suit many desktop environments whether you are a keen gamer or an everyday user.

We live in a world that's split on the question of whether size matters. For every French cuisine dish that places a tiny morsel of food in the centre of a massive white dish – there's a country like Italy that insists that the entire platter is covered in pizza or pasta. While semi-conductor manufacturers desire the minuscule, many a holiday romance has been spoiled with arguments about the motion of the ocean and the size of the wave. So how important is size to a portable audio solution? KitGuru gets hands-on with a bigger bullet speaker.

The volume of air being moved is something that we relate directly to loudness. Loudness is to music as physical strength is to humans. Although we can all agree that whispers are quiet and the front row of a Motorhead gig is loud, loudness is a very subjective thing.

It's not as simple as saying, “This sound is loud and that is not”. There are many other factors to consider, including the frequency of the sound, the pressure that a sound wave exerts and even things like the duration. So if you have one of the original ‘bullet speakers' for your phone, iPod or computer – is it worth checking out the second generation units? How much will you be spending and how will that change your life?

Capsule or bullet speakers are telescopic devices, so that a simple turn will increase the physical length. Alongside the speaker mechanism itself, you also have a rechargeable battery, USB interface for power and an audio lead that will connect to your sound source.

When we first saw the bullet speaker at a trade show several years back, it immediately grabbed you as a good idea. It was something small, simple and effective – easy to pack in your luggage when heading off on a trip or holiday. Recent price moves on products like the second generation X-Mini product mean you can pick one up from Play.com for just £11.99 – and that includes FREE delivery. It also features ‘Buddy Jack', but we'll get to that later.

Having ordered in one of the bigger portable speakers, we decided to stack it up against two older models and see if the big dog really does have the loudest bark.

Technical Specification
Manufacturer: X-Mini
Model: Mini II
Dimensions: 60mm x 44mm (closed)
Weight: 83 gramms
Speaker Output: 1.9 watts
Frequency Response: 100Hz to 20KHz
Signal to noise: >80db
Battery Charge Time: 2.5 Hours
Playback Time: Up to 8 Hours

Packaging and Contents
X-Mini products come in a nice little container, with intelligent internal moulding that should prevent damage in all but the most extreme ‘drop' situations. One audio cable is integrated into the unit itself – so you can plug and play when you have a charge. There is also a cable to connect to a USB power source when you need to play audio ‘tethered'. Instructions on use and a leaflet that encourages you to be charitable toward children, because small things matter. Ahhh, ain't that sweet.

Product Shots

Simple, but effective packaging - you really feel that you get value for your £11.99
It's worth giving the MINI II a spin, cos it will reveal the additional ports and 'solo use' connection jack. Alongside the power switch, there is a volume control and USB charge/audio socket. The 'killer' is the audio jack port - scroll down for 'Why'
Making audio sound good means moving air. The bigger your air mover (generally), the better. Here you can see the MINI II stacked up against a typical first generation device and the kind of 'stocking filler' that we've all bought someone
Not only is the build quality far superior to other products we've seen, it's also taller as well as wider. Each increase in dimension, means more air moving. And we like the air moving.

OK, so design and packaging aside, what is the experience of using the MINI II like?

In a word, great! It packs a significant punch and if you add it to your laptop, iPod or phone – then your musical world will definitely be better. We can agree with the manufacturer's label “Sound beyond size”, but struggle a little with the warning label that it is “Unbelievably loud”. This is a great little speaker. It is not, however, a magic speaker.

That said, it does have one neat trick left up its sleeve – and that's the ability to be daisy-chained. Yep, that's right. the audio out can feed another MINI II and that, in turn, can pass the signal down the line. With the huge array of internet radio stations available these days, it does mean that you could be out with friends (weekend break, post-clubbing chill out etc) and combine your powers for a quite sensational sound. This feature is called ‘Buddy Jack' and we loves it we does.

We tried it with just 3 speakers and the effect was really impressive. On holiday, in a group, you could quickly get to the level where a hotel boss would be asking you to turn it down or leave. On a smaller scale, the Base eXpansion System works and you can easily get a kitchen table to vibrate in a pleasing way.

Engage 'Buddy Jack' with friends and you have yourself an X-Mini Wall of Sound. This is a Must Have product.

KitGuru says: With battery life up around the 11 hour mark, volume control, extra base boost and the cool ability to daisy-chain your speaker with mates, this £11.99 unit from Play.com is almost perfect. Great addition to any music/movie lovers travel luggage – we can't recommend it enough. Compared to some of the poxy solutions we've seen punted for iPad/iPod at extremely high prices, this is a bargain.

ASUS has announced two new USB sound products, the MS-100 compact USB stereo speaker set, and HS-W1 wireless USB headset. Both are designed with sharp, striking looks, fantastic audio quality and a pure Plug ’n Play design, but with a minimal size that’s easily packed and to travelled with.

The MS-100 is a compact stereo USB speaker set, powered entirely by a USB 2.0 (or 3.0) port, yet still capable of providing punchy sound without distortion. Its minimalist and strong Art Deco cone design mimics the classic speaker shape, making them a perfect feature for any home or office environment. Meanwhile inside, its large 54mm speaker drivers can generate up to 93dB of sound with less than 3% distortion for its rich highs, thumping mids and full low tones.

No additional software driver is required on Windows® Vista® or Windows® 7 machines, making it suitable for any desktop or laptop that needs an immediate sound boost!

Providing clear, crisp sound in total comfort, the HS-W1 headset is built with large 70mm leather earpads for long lasting, natural comfort. The 2.4GHz wireless technology used with the HS-W1 headset allows CD quality sound (44.1KHz/16-bit, uncompressed) to be transmitted from the tiny USB dongle to the headset, while also offering twice the remote distance of Bluetooth audio. Combined with the acoustic tuned 40mm drivers with a built-in equalizer, it promotes voice tones and fine details, with a hint of extra bass punch where it’s needed.

The noise filtering microphone highlights speech tones, while its simple rotate-to-mute design is ideal compared to blindly searching for a small button while you’re on-call. The large on-ear volume controls also make it easily adjustable with a simple tap, without the hassle of a small and fiddly in-line remote.

With up to 8 hours operating time on its in-built rechargeable battery, the light 170g folding design and bundled touring case means the HS-W1 is an ideal travel companion.

Last week we reviewed a new budget priced pair of speakers, designed by Danish audio expert Peter Larsen. We were impressed with the overall quality, especially considering the modest asking price of £79.95. Are they worth consideration for a new upgrade?

If you have just built an updated computer in 2011 then a new, high quality set of speakers should not be underestimated. There are no shortage of high quality speakers at a £200+ price point, but what if you have only £100 to spend? Are you left with only clinical, harsh, poorly designed budget speakers? Microlab might just have the answer with the Solo 6C set of speakers, designed by Danish audio expert Peter Larsen.

The Solo 6C claim to offer ‘rich' audio quality with detailed acoustics, full bass and ‘vibrant' treble. There is even a remote control in the bundle to offer control over volume, input, bass and treble. Their construction relies on MDF to reduce distortion caused by vibration and they have been designed to enhance the overall experience from compressed audio files, such as MP3's.

Today we are looking at a set of speakers from KWorld, called the Classic C40. While the name of the company might be new to many readers, they are handmade and feature a wood enclosure. When the company contacted us they were brimming with enthusiasm, so we decided to test them in a variety of situations.

The Classic C40 speakers are a traditional 2:1 configuration: comprising two satellites and a subwoofer. The price point is very competitive, retailing for only £35 inc vat.

KWorld are keen to point out that the speakers are built from wood materials, by real people, not inside robotic factories.

Specifications:

Antec have a lot of faith in their Rockus speaker system. They are putting a new 60 day trial system behind a potential order, allowing the customer time to listen to them, and if they aren't happy then a full refund will be given.

What brands come to mind when you’re thinking of desktop speakers? Creative®? Logitech®? Klipsch®?

How about when you’re considering home theater speakers? Sony®? Bose®? Yamaha®?

We launched the soundscience brand late last year and our first product under this new brand was the soundscience rockus 3D|2.1 speakers. We know what most people thought – “what does Antec know about speakers?” We went into this a bit with a blog post but ultimately what it comes down to is that the innovation, design and reliability we put into our power supplies and cases actually translates well to the business of  creating a powerful and efficient amplifier and a unique speaker design. We’ve created a 2.1 speaker system that will melt your face while you play your favorite game, bend your mind in the latest movies and soothe your soul while you listen to your music collection.

Please note this is for the USA audience only!

Kitguru says : Zardon reviewed these in February and they scored 8.5/10, so clearly have something to shout about. If you try them out let us know what you think.

Corsair have built up a hell of a reputation over the last 15 years. Their success in the memory sector built a strong foundation for expansion into other territories – most recently power supplies and chassis design.

Never a company to rest idle they have continued developing other products, such as the HS1A USB gaming headset which we reviewed a short while ago.

The speaker market has been stale in recent years, with only the Antec Rockus 3D system catching our eye last month. Corsair are applying their experience and expertise by releasing the new SP2500 2.1 speaker system with some rather incredible specifications.

Antec are renowned among enthusiast circles for creating some of the finest computer cases and power supplies on the market. Like others in todays climate they are expanding into new territories and have turned their attention to speakers. This isn't a half hearted attempt however, with a new subsidiary entitled ‘SoundScience'.

The Californian based company are proud to announce that this new brand of speakers is the result of “two years of evolving prototypes, constant fine-tuning, and hundreds of hours listening” and the end result is what we are testing today – the Soundscience Rockus 3D. Unlike many other designs, Antec aren't using an OEM, these are developed and created in house.

Priced at £170 inc vat, they are certainly targeting enthusiasts with a higher level of disposable income. This also means however that we will be much more demanding when we come to test them later in the review.
