According to the latest rumours, Apple is all set to introduce its new M3 iPad Pro line-up, featuring OLED panels instead of the mini-LED displays currently used in these devices. The 11-inch and 12.9-inch variants of the M3 iPad Pro are expected to be unveiled on March 26th. However, there is no concrete evidence to support this claim, as the date seems to be based on an estimate of when third-party protective covers for the iPad Pro will become available on Amazon.

ITHome (via Wccftech) brought the release date of the protective cases to our attention. While it is exciting to hear about the potential release of the M3 iPad Pro, we should take the rumoured date of March 26th with a grain of salt, as there isn't any concrete evidence to support it.

The M3 iPad Pro is expected to be announced via a simple press release, similar to the M3 MacBook Air. Besides packing the new M3 chip, the upcoming iPad Pro tablets are expected to use OLED instead of mini-LED panels, theoretically allowing Apple to make the new devices thinner than their predecessors.

Other possible changes would include the inclusion of MagSafe wireless charging and small design modifications. Additionally, Apple might announce a new Magic Keyboard attachment featuring a larger trackpad and an aluminium deck, giving the iPad Pro a similar look and feel to a MacBook keyboard.

KitGuru says: The iPad Pro has been due an OLED upgrade for quite some time. It has been rumoured time and again, but perhaps 2024 will finally be the year. With the new M3 chip, it will also be interesting to go back and see how games like Death Stranding and Resident Evil Village perform.

All the way back in 2020, Apple removed Fortnite from its iOS App Store in response to efforts by Epic to circumvent the company’s store fees. 3 and a half years later, it seems the two companies have found common ground, with Apple finally unbanning Epic’s developer account.

Apple recently updated many of its terms and services, allowing for game streaming services to come to the iOS platform, alongside a whole host of other EU-mandated changes. This will allow Epic Games to bring Fortnite back to the platform and then some.

Following immediate confirmation that Fortnite will return to iPhones later this year, Epic Games have now announced the next big step towards its return, with the Fortnite creator taking to Twitter to say:

“We are bringing more opportunities to developers across all platforms and we’re so excited about what’s to come.… including bringing the Epic Games Store to iOS in Europe. Dev account secured, let’s go!”

Adding his own personal thoughts on this recent change, Epic’s CEO Tim Sweeney replied, saying “I'll be the first to acknowledge a good faith move by Apple amidst our cataclysmic antitrust battle, in granting Epic Games Sweden AB a developer account for operating Epic Games Store and Fortnite in Europe under the Digital Markets Act.”

While it seems as though for now the return of Epic Games to iOS will be limited to Europe, after almost 4 years this marks a major step in bringing one of the most popular games currently back to Apple users. Hopefully the iPhone maker chooses to expand its latest terms and services globally.

Fortnite was more popular than ever when it was removed from the Apple App Store back in 2020. Since then however, the game has only continued to grow – meaning it will be highly interesting to see how iOS users react when Fortnite does finally return to the platform.

Over the past few years, we have seen a rise in the number of game streaming services, including but not limited to Microsoft’s xCloud and Nvidia’s GeForce Now. Unfortunately, Apple has for years stood in the way of these services coming to its iOS platform – until now.

Making the announcement on their developer website, the trillion dollar company said “Today, Apple is introducing new options for how apps globally can deliver in-app experiences to users, including streaming games and mini-programs. Developers can now submit a single app with the capability to stream all of the games offered in their catalog.”

They continue, “Apps will also be able to provide enhanced discovery opportunities for streaming games, mini-apps, mini-games, chatbots, and plug-ins that are found within their apps.”

The full details on exactly how this works and the extent of its support can be found HERE. but in essence it seems as though the company is finally fully embracing such streaming services. Apple caught heat back in 2020 for their response to the rise in game streaming on mobile – heavily gimping the service on iOS and making it essentially useless.

It is therefore highly exciting to see that iOS users can finally stream games to their iPhones/iPads using a native and official app. Hopefully the App Store only continues to open up further.

Back in June of last year, Hideo Kojima announced that the award-winning open world ‘strand-type’ game Death Stranding would be coming to Apple’s Mac platform. This was later followed up by the reveal that the game would also be coming to the latest iPhone models. Initially intended to release late last year, Death Stranding has now gotten an official iOS release date,

Making the announcement via a press release, the team at Kojima Productions said “DEATH STRANDING DIRECTOR'S CUT, the definitive version of the genre-defying action game directed by Hideo Kojima and starring Norman Reedus, makes the trek onto Apple devices on Tuesday, January 30, 2024. The game will be available on iPhone 15 Pro models powered by the A17 Pro chip and every iPad and Mac with M-series chips.”

The game will cost $39.99 at launch, but during the pre-order period you can get the title for 50% off, bringing it down to just $19.99 – a great deal for what is arguably one of the most unique AAA games of the past generation.

Death Stranding marks the 3rd AAA game to come to Apple’s latest iPhones, with Resident Evil Village and RE4 Remake coming out late last year. With each of those titles taking a different approach to graphical and performance options, it will be interesting to see how Death Stranding’s settings are presented when the game launches in a week’s time.

During Apple’s recent iPhone event, the company announced their latest push into the gaming market, revealing that a bunch of full-on console titles would be making their way onto Apple’s latest and great iPhone 15 Pros. At the time, no release dates were given, though we now know when the first of these console games are set to arrive – with Resident Evil Village launching next month.

As reported by Gematsu, Capcom have officially announced the release date for Resident Evil Village on iPhones and iPad, revealing that the game will arrive just in time for Halloween on the 30th of October. While we do not yet have full pricing details, in Japan the base game will cost 4990 yen (converted to £27.50), with the Winters’ Expansion costing an additional 2000 yen (£11.02). That said, there will be some form of trial, with the opening sequences being playable for free.

Another Capcom title set to come to iPhone is the recently-released Resident Evil 4 Remake. No release date was provided (though is still promised to be coming some time this year), but the game’s price was revealed with the remake set to cost 7990 yen (£44.03) plus an additional 1000 yen (£5.51) for the Separate Ways DLC. Just like with Village however, the early portions of the game will be free to try out.

The mobile gaming market has historically been relatively cheap when compared to console gaming (not including microtransactions), and so it will be curious to see how these games perform on mobile.

Even the most premium mobile ports have typically landed at around £20 or less, and so to see a game such as RE4 Remake costing more than double that is interesting indeed. That said, bringing these massive AAA games to mobile is an exciting development and so hopefully more studios follow suit.

Apple recently held its Worldwide Developers Conference stream, where the iPhone manufacturer announced all manner of new software updates for its various devices, from the Macbook to the Apple Watch and more. One of the most interesting announcements was the fact that No Man’s Sky will soon be coming to the iPad as a native app.

Apple’s M series of chips have been praised for their speed, power and efficiency. Despite this power, few games take full advantage of these chips due to the iPad lacking many console-equivalent games. This may soon be changing, as Apple has announced that:

“The power of Apple silicon enables every new Mac to run AAA games with ease, including upcoming titles such as EA’s GRID Legends and Capcom’s Resident Evil Village. And since Apple silicon also powers iPad, game developers can bring their AAA games to even more users, like No Man’s Sky from Hello Games, which is coming to both Mac and iPad later this year.”

No Man’s Sky’s procedurally generated nature means that it will be rather interesting to see just how much the space exploration game will push the iPad’s hardware. No Man's Sky is available on all modern gaming devices from PlayStation to Xbox to PC and even the Switch.

There is little doubt that the game will perform better than at least the Nintendo Switch, and as such, hopefully No Man’s Sky becomes the first in a new wave of console games being ported to mobile.

It has been a long time since Apple revisited the iPhone SE and gave it a much needed upgrade. According to sources this week, we won't be waiting much longer, as Apple will reportedly be launching a new iPhone SE in March, as well as an upgraded iPad Air.

In a recent report, Bloomberg stated Apple is planning to launch the new iPhone SE and iPad Air around March 8th. As per sources, Apple is planning a virtual event to present both products, following the trend set by the company on its latest announcements.

The same report claims the new iPhone SE will feature a better camera and a faster processor (probably Apple A15). In addition, it will support 5G connectivity, Qi wireless charging and MagSafe. On the other hand, Macotakara's report claims the new iPhone SE won't support Apple's magnet technology, so we're unsure about this particular feature for now. As for the design, it seems it will keep the same as the 2nd gen iPhone SE.

The new iPad Air is also expected to feature a superior chip and support 5G connectivity. Moreover, reports also point out that it will feature a Centre Stage front-facing camera.

New iOS hardware will of course be accompanied by a new iOS update. Apparently, Apple is planning to launch the iOS 15.4 update in early March, adding in new features, such as the ability to use FaceID while wearing a mask. Users can also expect to see the new Universal Control feature, so you can use one keyboard and trackpad to control multiple Macs and iPads.

KitGuru says: It's nice to see Apple may update the iPhone SE with a new chip and 5G support. However, many were also expecting a visual redesign. The iPhone 13 mini or 12 mini casing would be ideal, but that may be asking too much.

One of the PS5’s most unique selling points is the DualSense controller’s Adaptive Triggers, used both for gameplay and immersion purposes. Slowly but surely, more and more devices are supporting the feature, possibly creating a new controller standard.

iOS 15.4 recently saw its first Beta release shortly following the uneventful launch of iOS15.3. Luckily for Apple fans, 15.4 is looking to be quite exciting feature-wise, with a major step towards continued gaming integrations.

With iOS 15.4, the PS5 DualSense controller – which was already supported on mobile – has now seen additional features being ported over to non-Sony systems. Though it was already available on PC, the DualSense’s Adaptive Triggers can now be used with mobile applications.

Of course, older games will not suddenly be upgraded to offer use of the Adaptive Triggers, but developers can now create or update games to utilise this unique functionality.

At its worst, the Adaptive Triggers are a toggleable gimmick. At its best however, it offers multiple simultaneous improvements to the overall gaming experience. The mobile platform’s hardware has far surpassed the gaming software that is run on it, and as such, iPhones and Android hold within them so much gaming potential. This is a nice step towards this recognition.

The post Fortnite could be banned from Apple until 2027 first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
One of the biggest video game stories in recent years revolves around the Epic Games v Apple lawsuit, which saw the Fortnite creator have its biggest money maker banned from the Apple App Store. Following the recent conclusion of the trial, it was revealed that the battle royale game may be banned for the next 5 years.

In the wake of the recent conclusion of the first Epic Games v Apple lawsuit, which saw Epic Games win some, but also lose some, it was unclear whether the main topic of focus – Fortnite – would be coming back to the Apple ecosystem or not.

Epic Games’ CEO Tim Sweeny has now shared emails from Apple themselves, who made the situation very clear. Taking to Twitter, Sweeny said “Apple lied. Apple spent a year telling the world, the court, and the press they’d ‘welcome Epic’s return to the App Store if they agree to play by the same rules as everyone else'. Epic agreed, and now Apple has reneged in another abuse of its monopoly power over a billion users.”

He then shared an email exchange between the two companies which in essence (and in Sweeny’s own words) saw “Apple [inform] Epic that Fortnite will be blacklisted from the Apple ecosystem until the exhaustion of all court appeals, which could be as long as a 5-year process.”

Regardless of whose side you land on in this court case, Fortnite being absent from the Apple ecosystem comes with many ramifications, to both Epic Games and Apple. It seems that perhaps for the first time, major companies are putting profits aside in order to make a point, standing their ground and wanting to see themselves as the moral victor. Of course, from an outside perspective it simply looks like an ego contest between two billion dollar companies. If nothing else, this situation is an interesting one to observe – as nothing similar has been seen in the past.

After a lengthy beta period, the newest version of iOS is out now, though with some of the biggest promised features missing. Even so, those with an iPhone or iPad can look forward to a plethora of improvements and additions (and perhaps a few downgrades too), including a new Safari layout; live text; new focus modes and more.

Available now to all those with an iPhone 6s or newer, iOS 15 brings with it a long list of refinements, as well as some bigger improvements and features (though some of them are not available at launch).

Some of the biggest and most notable features include the new focus modes, which allows you to change your homescreen layout, available apps, notifications and more all with the tap of a button. It expands upon the previously available driving mode, now letting you make as many different modes as you want, all the while tailoring it to your needs.

Facetime gets a number of new conveniences, including a Zoom-like invite feature allowing you to communicate with non iOS users; new sound options letting you focus on voices, or isolate certain sounds; and a new bokeh depth of field effect which blurs the background of your live video feed.

Live text is one of the most impressive features added, allowing you to easily extract text from any photo thanks to new recognition technology, enabling you to highlight and copy text, numbers and more from a photo or screenshot. The Photos app as a whole has been enhanced, with more detailed metadata being made available to the user and more options available for memories – to name a few.

Other miscellaneous additions and improvements include: changes to imessage; a redesign of the notification panel; improvements to spotlight search; a new layout for Safari (though thanks to negative feedback, users can switch to the older layout); improvements to maps, notes, wallet, weather and more; and of course more privacy features.

There are also some other larger features that have been pushed back to later in the year, including Share Play (letting you watch content online with friends); find my Airpods; app privacy report, and more. Even with these missing features, iOS 15 offers plenty for you to dig into, and does just about enough to keep Apple’s operating system feeling fresh for one more year.

Companies often adjust the prices of their storefront items based on the current exchange rates, with almost all digital stores offering regional pricing differences. In an unexpected twist, the prices for Apple’s App Store will be dropping across the board in the UK, giving iPhone owners better value for money.

Making the announcement on their developer’s website, Apple revealed that “In the next few days, prices of apps and in-app purchases (excluding auto-renewable subscriptions) on the App Store will decrease in:

 • South Africa
 • United Kingdom
 • All territories that use the Euro currency”

Unfortunately, some places will see their App Store prices increase:

 • Georgia: New value-added tax of 18%
 • Tajikistan: New value-added tax of 18% that applies to developers based outside of Tajikistan
 • Italy: Proceeds on the App Store will be increased to reflect a change to the Digital Services Tax effective rate.

Regional pricing is used to ensure that customers from across the world are paying roughly the same amount of money in real-terms based on each country’s economic position. Prices in the UK tend to be much higher than other countries because of this, and so it is interesting to see them fall.

Last night Apple’s annual WorldWide Developers Conference began – as always – with Tim Cook taking to the state to announce the latest version of Apple’s software. With very few leaks beforehand, the announcement of iOS 15 came with a number of surprises.

The first major feature coming with iOS 15 is an overhaul of Facetime and Messaging. Facetime now offers many new conveniences, including the Zoom-like ability to send invites through links, allowing non iOS users to use Facetime (when invited to do so), and the ability to watch films, tv shows, and consume other content all together and in real-time (dubbed SharePlay) – no doubt inspired by the past year of lockdowns. Other small refinements include a slightly new look, spatial audio and more.

iOS 15 also introduces new ways to stay productive and on top of your life. The New ‘Focus’ feature takes the Do Not Disturb mode and turns it up to 11, allowing users to create multiple different profiles, all of which will affect what notifications you receive, what apps you see and more. All of this can also be seamlessly transitioned between one another, making the process simple and quick.

Notifications have also been changed. Alongside small visual tweaks, notifications received can now be grouped together based on importance, how time sensitive they are and more. Other miscellaneous features include improved Weather, Maps, Notes, Safari and Translate apps; an improvement to Find My, bringing many of the AirTags features to the iPhone – and many more smaller improvements.

iOS 15 isn’t a major shift in functionality nor a massive redesign (as Android 12 is), but offers many small tweaks and refinements, all of which should make using your phone that much more simple and convenient, all while offering a greater level of control. The full list of changes can be found HERE.

As you may know, the new iPad Pro featuring Apple's M1 chip has launched. There are a few variants with different storage configurations and screen sizes, but there are only two memory configurations: 8GB and 16GB. What's interesting is that no matter which one you choose, you won't be able to fully use it because apps are only accessing around 5GB of memory.

The issue was brought up when a user commented on the Procreate Folio forum, explaining that he was unable to transfer a file from his old iPad to a new 5th gen iPad Pro. As per the user, the iPad Pro displayed a message saying that the file was too big.

After some discussion, an Artstation Pro developer stated that after running some stress tests, he concluded that an app running on a 16GB M1 iPad Pro can only access 5GB of RAM, 0.5GB more than the accessible memory on the 6GB iPad. Allocating more than 5GB of RAM leads the app to crash.

A comment made by Procreate developer on Twitter, stating that “all M1 iPads have the same amount of RAM available”, makes us believe the same should also happen on the 8GB iPad Pro. Apple has yet to comment on this issue, but it seems that the M1 iPad needs an update to enable better performance.

KitGuru says: It's hard to believe that such an expensive device can be limited to 5GB of RAM when there's more memory available than that. Apple may fix this issue with a patch at a later date, but for now, users looking to upgrade to the new iPad Pro due to the increased amount of RAM may be better off waiting for Apple's response to the issue.

Apple Arcade was created with the intention to bring greater awareness to the many great video games available on mobile platforms. With a monthly subscription, iOS users could get their hands on a wide range of interesting and unique games, none of which have any microtransactions. Though things have been quiet for a while, Apple has now announced its “biggest expansion yet.”

Making the announcement on its website, Apple revealed that it is “introducing two entirely new game categories and adding more than 30 incredible titles to Apple Arcade, its popular gaming subscription service for players of all ages.”

Some of the games being added include NBA 2K21 Arcade Edition, Star Trek: Legends, and The Oregon Trail. On top of this, the iPhone creator has announced two new categories of games: Timeless Classics and App Store Greats.

Timeless Classics will add a number of highly famous classic games such as Chess, Backgammon and more, while App Store Greats will add popular previously premium games such as Fruit Ninja and THREES to the service.

Since its launch, Apple Arcade had amassed a small but dedicated audience. It is good to see Apple continue to expand the service, attempting to make it more competitive and offering even greater value for money. The full blog post by Apple can be found HERE.

Recently, Apple announced its intentions to reduce its App Store commissions from 30% to 15% to developers who make under $1 million in annual revenue via its store. This new ‘Small Business Program’ is now live, with developers being able to enroll onto the program – though Epic Games is of course ineligible.

The debate surrounding the 30% digital store commissions have existed for as long as the stores themselves. The argument made by many was the fact that upkeep on a digital store was nowhere near as costly as that of a physical store, and so naturally commission rates should be reflective of that fact.

While some storefronts, such as the Epic Games Store, embraced the lower commission rates, others including Apple, chose to stick with the regular 30% standard. This led to the now famous lawsuit between Apple and Epic Games, which is still ongoing, and likely will be for quite some time.

That being said, in amongst all this, Apple announced that it would be lowering its App Store commissions from 30% to 15% to developers who make less than $1 million in annual revenue from the store. This ‘Small Business Program’ as it has been called, will go in effect from the 1st of January 2021, though enrollment for the year will close on the 18th of December.

According to Apple “this program helps you invest more resources into your business so you can continue building great apps. The vast majority of developers on the App Store who sell digital goods and services are eligible — simply complete a short enrollment form.”

This move is undoubtedly good for developers, though of course it does little for Epic Games, meaning that the conflict between the two tech giants is likely to continue just as is. It’ll be interesting to see how this saga eventually concludes.

Genshin Impact offers a vast open world with plenty of exploration, combat and even online co-op, all wrapped up into an RPG with full voice acting, proper direction and an evolving story. The most impressive thing about the game however is likely the fact that developers MiHoYo managed to get all this to run on a smartphone. As such, it is no surprise that Genshin Impact has won Apple’s iPhone Game of the Year, at its annual awards.

Each year Apple selects a number of games and apps to receive special recognition. For 2020, Genshin Impact has won the iPhone Game of the Year award, with the tech giant saying “the open-world RPG freed gamers to explore a massive realm filled with colourful monsters and earthshaking titans, all brought to life with cutting-edge visual effects.”

Since its launch at the end of September, Genshin Impact has received both critical and commercial success, grossing over $100 million in less than two weeks, despite being free-to-play. If you have yet to try the game out, Genshin Impact is available on iOS, Android, PC and PS4.

The iPad Game of the Year meanwhile was awarded to Legends of Runeterra, the free-to-play collectible card game from Riot Games, which is set in the same world as the ever-popular League of Legends. The full list of awards for the “App Store Best of 2020” can be found HERE.

There’s no denying that Epic Games has gotten creative when it comes to the lawsuit regarding itself and Apple, vis-a-vis the removal of Fortnite from the Apple App Store. While Apple has remained much more quiet on the situation, Epic Games has made sure to let it be known that Fortnite needs to be ‘freed’. As such, fans who have sided with Epic Games can now show their support through official “#FreeFortnite” merchandise.

In a collaboration with Neff headwear, fans can “join the battle & grab the limited edition drop” of #FreeFortnite merch. The merchandise in question includes a number of short and long sleeve t-shirts as well as a face mask – all of which are adorned with the very resolute “Free Fortnite.” slogan, alongside the logo of the Fortnite llama, stylised similarly to the classic Apple logo.

The merchandise is priced between $12-$28 and tells prospective buyers to “join millions of fans in the battle to #FREEFORTNITE with this [merch item].

As mentioned, this isn’t the first time that Epic games has gotten fans involved in this legal dispute. Upon the initial removal of Fortnite – following the implementation of Epic’s own payment system in the game, breaking App Store Terms of Service – the publisher launched a video both in-game and online which mocked Apple’s iconic 1984 advert.

While the issue of Apple vs Epic Games is clearly a legal one and will be resolved through the legal system, it is clear that the Fortnite creator is turning this into something else entirely; much more than just a legal lawsuit.

The ongoing situation regarding Epic Games vs Apple, vis-a-vis Fortnite being removed from the App Store continues to evolve and get more interesting by the day. With neither of the two companies appearing to back down, Microsoft has now weighed in on the situation, officially announcing its support of Epic Games.

Taking to Twitter, Phil Spencer announced that “Today we filed a statement in support of Epic's request to keep access to the Apple SDK for its Unreal Engine. Ensuring that Epic has access to the latest Apple technology is the right thing for gamer developers & gamers.”

What Spencer is referring to is the fact that in the wake of Epic Games breaking the Apple App Store terms of service by adding its own payment method and circumventing Apple’s own within Fortnite, the popular Battle Royale shooter was removed from the store.

Furthermore, following the filing of a lawsuit by Epic Games, Apple removed Epic Games’ developer license, threatening not only Epic’s own applications, but all those that run on Unreal Engine. This debacle all originated from the fact that Epic Games believes that Apple’s 30% cut of all transactions on its platform is too high – with the engine developer taking matters into its own hands.

Though it makes sense that Microsoft would support Epic Games, it is still curious nonetheless to see the console manufacturer take an official stance against Apple. It’ll be interesting to see if anyone else weighs in on the matter, and how this will shake out, when all is said and done.

For years, Fortnite on Android circumvented the Google Play Store due to its 30% cut on in-app purchases. Epic Games however could not do the same on iOS due to limitations within the OS. Recently however, the developers added their own payment system into the popular Battle Royale shooter, leading Apple to remove Fortnite in its entirety from the App Store — with Epic Games filing a lawsuit in response.

Epic Games has been a long-standing opponent to the percentage cuts that both Apple and Google take from all of the developers on their respective app stores. That being said, as iOS is a closed operating system, Epic Games could not circumvent Apple’s App Store, leading the publisher of Fortnite to begrudgingly accept the terms of the ‘Apple Tax’.

That being said, Epic Games recently added a new payment system into Fortnite, which would see the developer get around these fees. Furthermore, Epic Games gave users of its own payment system a permanent discount on the purchasing of V-Bucks.

As a consequence, Apple has removed Fortnite from its App Store, saying in a statement to The Verge: “Today, Epic Games took the unfortunate step of violating the App Store guidelines that are applied equally to every developer and designed to keep the store safe for our users. As a result their Fortnite app has been removed from the store. Epic enabled a feature in its app which was not reviewed or approved by Apple, and they did so with the express intent of violating the App Store guidelines regarding in-app payments that apply to every developer who sells digital goods or services.”

Apple continued, saying “Epic has had apps on the App Store for a decade, and have benefited from the App Store ecosystem – including its tools, testing, and distribution that Apple provides to all developers. Epic agreed to the App Store terms and guidelines freely and we’re glad they’ve built such a successful business on the App Store. The fact that their business interests now lead them to push for a special arrangement does not change the fact that these guidelines create a level playing field for all developers and make the store safe for all users. We will make every effort to work with Epic to resolve these violations so they can return Fortnite to the App Store.”

In response, Fortnite published a video online, while also adding a screen in-game to its 300 million players, which states: “Epic Games has defied the App Store Monopoly. In retaliation, Apple is blocking Fortnite from a billion devices. Visit fn.gg/freefortnite and join the fight to stop 2020 from becoming ‘1984’,” in reference to George Orwell’s dystopian novel, while also mocking Apple’s own 1984-inspired advert. Furthermore, Epic Games has also filed a lawsuit against Apple for its actions.

With Fortnite being such a big game, it’s surprising to see Apple willing to go as far as removing the app entirely. Likewise, Epic Games filing a lawsuit is equally as unexpected. It will be interesting to see how this disagreement between Epic Games and Apple develops – and ultimately who will come out on top.

When Mario Kart Tour was first announced, one of the most interesting decisions by Nintendo was to make the mobile racing title playable only in portrait mode. As the game races towards its first anniversary, players who prefer a wider field of view can now play Mario Kart Tour in landscape.

In an update video titled “Race in portrait or landscape, your choice!” Nintendo announced that players will be able to play Mario Kart Tour in both landscape or portrait starting from today, the 21st of July, saying “Players will have the option of racing in either the existing portrait mode or the new landscape mode! Landscape mode includes a new control layout, so find your favorite way to play!”

Based on the trailer, it appears as though selecting landscape or portrait will have no effect on who you’re matched with. Instead, as stated by Nintendo, you can simply “find your favourite way to play.”

Mario Kart Tour first launched for Android and iOS in September 2019 to mixed reviews, due in part to its gacha system, as well as its lack of true multiplayer. Since its launch, Nintendo have consistently updated the game with new characters, maps, vehicles, seasonal events, and even real-time multiplayer.

Though it is unlikely that Mario Kart Tour will ever replace a dedicated console Mario Kart game, the addition of a landscape mode does bring the title that much closer to reality.

Late last month, Apple’s WWDC ‘Worldwide Developers Conference’ took place, announcing the next major software versions for its wide range of smart devices. Following the conference, iOS 14 was made available to developers, allowing them to begin prepping their applications for optimisation. Now, more casual users, who like to be on the fringe of technology, can download iOS 14, as the public beta has gone live.

iOS 14 represents a rather major update for Apple’s iPhones. This latest version includes a significant overhaul of the homescreen, with widgets now being available for use across the homescreens. Furthermore, a smart app drawer has been added, allowing for a new way of interacting with one’s installed apps.

Other additions and changes include UI improvements across the board, such as a new and revamped calling and Siri UI; picture-in-picture mode has finally arrived for iPhones; more privacy enhancements; and a new translate app.

For those who would like to try out iOS 14 early, prior to its full release some time later this year (most likely in September) the public beta is now available. In order to access the beta, users must go to Apple’s beta website HERE, register their account for beta access, and then download the beta profile, allowing them to access the latest and greatest that iOS 14 has to offer.

Of course, it is worth noting that the beta is just that – a beta, and so performance and battery issues may persist throughout. That being said, Apple’s beta releases have been relatively stable over the past few years, and so while caution is still advised, it is unlikely that any major issues will occur. The public beta is available for a wide variety of apple devices, including the iPhone, iPad, Macs and Apple Watch

Every year in June, Apple takes to the stage to host its annual Worldwide Developers Conference. Due to the current global climate however, there was uncertainty with regards to how Apple planned to facilitate the conference this year. Though it was previously confirmed that WWDC would still be going ahead, the electronics manufacturer has now provided more details on what can be expected come the start of WWDC in late June.

Traditionally, Apple’s WWDC has taken place some time within the first half of June. Unsurprisingly however, due to COVID-19 and all of its knock-on effects, the conference will be taking place later in the month – on the 22nd of June to be specific. This is not all that is changing this year however.

For the first time in its 30+ year history, WWDC20 will take place exclusively online. Commenting on this change, Apple stated that “although our gathering will be virtual this year, we want to recognize and celebrate the creative contributions of our young developers from around the world. We can’t wait to see this next generation of innovative thinkers turn their ideas into a reality.”

Of course, while WWDC serves as a time and place where developers from all over the world can come together to learn from each other, the annual conference also gives fans a sneak peek at the future of Apple’s software. Apple confirmed that fans will get a chance to receive “early access to the future of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS.”

Not much is currently known about the future of iOS and Apple’s other services. It’s therefore exciting to see what the global smartphone manufacturer has planned. Though it may be taking place later than usual and will be presented in a new manner, it is encouraging to see that WWDC will still soon be upon us. Apple’s full press release can be found HERE.

Logitech has announced a new keyboard case for the iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd and 4th generation) and iPad Pro 11-inch (1st and 2nd generation), as well as a new mouse for all iPads, including the new iPad Pro models.

Following the announcement of the new iPad Pro, Logitech is set to launch a new all-in-one backlit keyboard case named Slim Folio Pro. To further enhance the user's working experience, Logitech will also launch an iPad edition of its “best-selling” Pebble mouse.

Featuring protection for the iPad Pro and Bluetooth Low Energy pairing, the Slim Folio Pro was designed to provide a “comfortable typing experience”. Previous iterations of the Slim Folio Pro have been successful, so Logitech decided to create a new model to match the launch of the new iPad Pro. This lightweight case surrounds the corners of the iPad Pro, designed to prevent it from getting physical damage. The keyboard remembers the last device it has connected and will automatically turn on when you “open the iPad Pro to type”. The battery is rated for a duration of up to 3 months on a single charge, based on daily use limited to 2 hours.

The Logitech Slim Folio Pro also looks highly adjustable based on what you are doing, be it typing, sketching or reading. For typing, users can dock the iPad upright and use the “edge-to-edge backlit keyboard”, equipped with a scissor mechanism in each key and multiple shortcut keys. If you want to sketch, place the iPad on top of the keyboard, and if you have an Apple Pencil or similar, there's a magnetic latch to secure it. To read, fold the keyboard to the back of the iPad and enjoy.

The Logitech Pebble i345 is a portable and ergonomic mouse that uses Bluetooth to “give a new level of precision and control on iPad”. Thanks to its slimness and a natural fit to the palm of a hand, the Pebble is easy and simple to use anywhere. According to Logitech, it will be available in both graphite and white to match other iPad accessories.

Both the Logitech Slim Folio Pro and Logitech Pebble i345 will be available in April 2020. The Slim Folio Pro for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro will be priced at $129.99 and for the 11-inch iPad Pro it will cost $119.99, and the Pebble i345 will be priced at $29.99. 2018’s 11 and 12.9 inch iPad Pros served as a big leap for Apple’s tablets both in terms of design and performance. With slimmer bezels, faceID and a whole slew of new features and functionality, the 3rd generation iPad Pro set the new standard for Apple’s tablets. The company has now announced its 4th generation iPad Pros, alongside some much-rumoured accessories which may fundamentally change the way the devices are used.

The 4th generation iPad Pros bring with them a number of additions and refinements. Keeping the same screen, design, and dimensions, one of the new iPad’s main features is its new and improved camera. Inspired by the iPhone 11 series, the new camera features two lenses, a 12MP wide and 10MP ultra-wide sensor, allowing for greater flexibility with both photography and video.

Furthermore, the iPad Pro features a LiDAR scanner. LiDAR stands for Light Detection and Ranging and is used to determine the distance of objects. This new level of depth sensing will “open up tremendous possibilities for augmented reality and beyond” according to Apple.

The iPad also comes with WIFI 6, future proofing it for when the standard becomes much more accessible, and a new base storage of 128GB. Lastly, the 4th generation iPad Pro comes with a new A12Z Bionic chip. According to Apple, “iPad Pro is so fast it outpaces most PC laptops available today. It makes everything you do fast and fluid, from your everyday tasks to graphics-intensive workflows. And the 8-core graphics processor means even more performance and realism for the apps and games where it matters most”. The 3rd generation iPad Pros are still speedy, and so the new chips are giving Apple’s tablets even more headroom for future features.

Alongside the iPad, Apple also announced a new accessory. The Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro adds a trackpad to the tablet for the first time. With iOS 13, Apple added rudimentary support for cursors, however now with iPadOS 13.4 the devices are seeing full system-wide support. Unlike traditional cursors, the one on the iPad is much more contextual, acting like a hybrid between traditional computers and a tablet. The new accessory also features an extra USB-C port and a ‘floating design’, though it isn’t set to release until later in the year.

The 4th generation iPad Pros will release on the 25th of March with a starting price of £769 for the 11-inch, and £969 for the 12.9-inch.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the new iPad Pros? Do you like the direction that Apple seems to be taking with the devices? Does the 11 or 12.9 inch appeal to you more? Let us know down below.

Twelve South has introduced new lines to its luxury leather case range by adding the Journal series for MacBook and iPad Pro. Both new cases are crafted from full-grain cognac leather and are designed to offer a luxurious premium feel.

The new Journal series from Twelve South includes cases for MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and the iPad Pro, as well as the Journal CaddySack which is a travel tote for chargers, cables and adaptors. The Journal case series features dual zippers, micro-suede lining, internal pockets for storing documents or accessories and reinforced corners to keep Apple devices protected.

Journal cases for the iPad Pro also double up as a viewing stand for the device as well as being a typing and sketching wedge. The integrated kick stand holds the iPad at a comfortable viewing angle for various applications or illustrating with the Apple Pencil. An internal pocket offers a convenient place to store documents or a slim compact keyboard and there is also space to charge the Apple Pencil beside the iPad magnetic charger. Thanks to a snap-in-shell, the iPad Pro is held securely in the case without compromising the edge-to-edge liquid retina display.

Twelve South has fashioned the Journal for MacBook out of top-quality water and UV resistant leather, it features smart details including leather zipper pulls, embossed elements and modern black stitching. The slim form factor of the Journal case means users can adjust screen angles, comfortably type and easily access USB ports without having to remove the case. At the bottom of the interior of the Journal MacBook case is a hidden compartment perfect for carrying documents.

Both new luxury Journal cases are available to purchase from Amazon UK now. The Journal for iPad Pro is priced from £99 with designs to fit both 11” and 12.9” 3rd generation iPad Pro. The Journal for MacBook is priced from £119.99.

WWDC is Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference which is held every year in June. It is one of the company’s biggest events each year (perhaps second only to their September Keynote), and is used to announce new hardware alongside the new versions of iOS, iPadOS, and MacOS – among other surprises. Normally held at the San Jose Convention Center, this year’s WWDC20 will instead be hosted online, bringing a “completely new online experience to millions.”

On Apple’s website, the company announced that “This June, WWDC20 brings a completely new online experience to millions of talented and creative developers around the world. Join us for a fully packed program — including Keynote and sessions — to gain early access to the future of Apple platforms and engage with Apple engineers. Dive into an exciting learning experience and discover how to create your most innovative apps yet using the latest Apple technologies.”

Though not explicitly stated, it is very likely that the shift in medium for WWDC is due to the coronavirus pandemic. With crowds recommended to be kept to a minimum, and many other events turning to the internet, it would appear as though Apple is following suit in taking these precautions.

From a consumer perspective, this shouldn't affect too much, as the press conference at WWDC has been streamed online for a number of years. One of the announcements at WWDC20 will undoubtedly be iOS 14, which has already leaked revealing new features such as system wide cursor support as well as an OCR-like feature.

No concrete date has been provided for WWDC20, but based on the company’s history, expect it to take place during the first half of June.

iOS 13 served as a major development for iPads. Introduced alongside the update last year was iPadOS – an offshoot of iOS which provided more utility to iPad users, narrowing the gap between tablets and laptops. It would appear as though iOS 14 is set to bridge this even further as code within iOS suggests that the Apple devices are set to receive full system-wide mouse support with the next OS update.

Reported by 9to5Mac, “Apple is set to roll out rich system-wide support for mouse cursors with iOS 14”. With iOS 13 and iPadOS 13, Apple introduced the feature in a much more basic manner, where mouse support was enabled, but only through accessibility settings. Furthermore, the support itself was limited and on a system level, featured no optimisations. It would appear that this is set to change with iOS and iPadOS 14.

According to 9to5Mac, “The changes coming to the software will bring most of the cursor features you recognize from a Mac desktop experience to iOS”. This means the cursor will disappear after a few seconds of not being used – unlike the current implementation which is permanently featured on the screen. Furthermore, the cursor will be more dynamic, shifting based on what it is hovering over. Currently, the cursor simply shows a circle, regardless of the function. Lastly, the mouse support will cover gesures such as a two finger click serving as a right click.

Apple is also allegedly set to reveal new hardware to coincide with this new software. The company will apparently release new smart keyboards which feature a trackpad on them, allowing users to take advantage of these new systems being added.

The release of iPadOS 13 brought many desktop features to the iPad, including a full browser and greater window support, among other functionalities. It looks as though iPadOS 14 will take this to the next logical step, and finally bridge the gap between iPad and laptop. Of course, we will have to wait and see what Apple themselves announce, and whether this comes to fruition or not.

Mario Kart Tour initially launched in September 2019 to a great deal of buzz surrounding it. Bringing the iconic series to smartphones could have allowed for everyone to experience the best of Mario Kart. Unfortunately the game launched with a number of issues such as its control scheme, gacha mechanics, and a lack of true multiplayer. Now Nintendo is finally addressing one of these issues as the game’s multiplayer update is set to go live on the 8th of March.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the Mario Kart Tour page announced that you can now “Race against players worldwide to raise your grade under rules that change daily in Standard Races and Gold Races. When racing friends or others nearby, Rooms let you pick speed, item slot number, and more. Play your way when #MarioKartTour multiplayer launches Mar. 8, 8 PM PT! [4am 9th of March UK time].

Back in December, Mario Kart Tour hosted a multiplayer beta period, though it was only accessible to those who were subscribed to the £5/month Gold Pass. A second beta occurred near the end of January which was open to all. Real-time multiplayer is now finally officially arriving to the game, and will allow you to play with up to seven players both locally and online.

Though controls for the game are still much more simplified when compared to its console counterpart, it’s good nonetheless to see one of the game’s most requested features finally come to fruition. Mario Kart Tour was the most downloaded game on iOS in 2019, so it’ll be interesting to see how the launch of the multiplayer update will affect the game’s user base.

When Apple introduced the second generation of iPad Pros, it brought with it the ProMotion displays – screens which support a 120hz refresh rate. Not only did this bring general improvements to everyday usability, but it also meant that games could now be played at up to 120fps. In the latest Fortnite update (v11.40), players of the battle royale shooter can now enjoy 120fps gaming on mobile, provided they own Apple’s third generation iPad Pro.

When Fortnite first released for iOS in April 2018, the game was capped at 30fps. At the time, the latest iPhones were running on the Apple A11 chip. With the introduction of the 2018 iPad Pros and the iPhone XS/XR, the A12/X chipsets allowed for Epic Games to add a 60fps option to these devices. It would appear as though Epic have been working on under-the-hood optimisations to their game, as the latest update allows for Fortnite to be played at 120fps on the 2018 iPad Pros.

Fortnite version 11.40 went live yesterday and brought with it a number of mobile-focused enhancements. Alongside the 120fps support for the third generation iPad Pros, the controller support has now been improved on all iOS devices.

With the release of iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 in September 2019, Apple devices added support for both the Dualshock 4 and Xbox controllers. Until now however, functionality with the controller has been less than perfect in Fortnite. The update however, adds support for the L3 and R3 buttons, making the mobile version feel more intuitive and closer to its console counterparts.

The update also adds a number of other features and changes such as ‘sidegrading,’ additions to the Battle Lab and reduced material costs for weapon upgrades – alongside a litany of bug fixes. The full patch notes can be found HERE.

With update 11.40, it is interesting to see that Fortnite now runs better on a mobile device, than it does on traditional consoles. With the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X set to support higher framerates than the current consoles, it’ll be interesting to see what framerate becomes standard in the next generation.

KitGuru says: Are you surprised to see Fortnite running at 120fps on mobile? Do you own a third generation iPad Pro? How long do you think it will be before 120fps becomes the industry standard for gaming? Let us know down below.
