Last night, Microsoft held its annual Surface event, revamping its entire line-up of tablets, phones and PCs. On the tablet side, Microsoft launched three new Windows 11 devices – the Surface Pro 8, Pro X and Go 3.

The Surface Pro 8 looks to be a reasonable upgrade over its predecessor, featuring a 120Hz screen with Dolby Vision, pre-installed Windows 11 and a replaceable SSD. Available storage options include 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB. Processor options were also upgraded to the latest Intel Tiger Lake Core i5 and i7 CPUs, including the i5-1135G7 and i7-1185G7. The minimum amount of RAM was increased to 8GB, but users may choose up to 32GB. Moreover, it now features two Thunderbolt 4 ports and two USB-C ports. Battery life has improved as well, offering up to 16 hours under typical usage. The Microsoft Surface Pro 8 starts at £999.

Microsoft also updated the ARM-based Pro X, adding Windows 11 by default and a cheaper Wi-Fi model. Available SoC options still include the Qualcomm SQ1 with 8GB of RAM and the SQ2 with 16GB of RAM, and storage options remain the same, letting you choose between 128GB, 256GB and 512GB. The Surface Pro X starts at £999.

Lastly, there's the new Surface Go 3, which Microsoft claims to be the “most portable” Surface to date. The 10.5-inch screen has a 1920×1280 resolution with a 3:2 aspect ratio. There are two new processor options: the dual core Intel Pentium Gold 6500Y and the quad core Core i3-10100Y. You can choose between 4GB and 8GB of memory and 64GB (not available with the i3 CPU) or 128GB of storage. Like the other Surface 2-in-1 devices, it will come with Windows 11 pre-installed. The Surface Go 3 starts at £369.

Back in February, we learned that Samsung was planning two new tablets to launch over the Summer – the Galaxy A7 Lite and the Galaxy Tab S7 Lite. While we still don't know much about the cheaper Tab S7, reports this week have revealed the specifications for the Galaxy A7 Lite.

Back in February, Twitter leaker ‘WalkingCat' reported that Samsung is planning to launch two new tablets in June: the Galaxy Tab S7 Lite and the Tab A7 Lite. Now, thanks to a new leak from @evleaks/Voice we know what to expect from the Tab A7 Lite, which is set to be Samsung's entry-level tablet.

According to the report, the Samsung Tab A7 Lite will ship with 3GB of RAM paired with a MediaTek Helio P22T SoC, featuring an 8-core processor clocked up to 2.3GHz and an IMG PowerVR GE8320 GPU. One area where we can see clear cost cutting is the rear camera, which does not include flash capabilities. However, the battery is fairly sizeable, coming in at 5,100mAh.

Currently, the Samsung Tab A7 sells for £219 here in the UK, so the Lite version should lower the cost of entry even further to less than £200. Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite in Q2 2021.

KitGuru says: The specifications of the Tab A7 Lite might not impress power users, but as an entry-level tablet, it seems to tick all the right boxes. All that is left to know is if the price matches the specifications. Are you looking for a new tablet? Considering the leaked specifications, would you consider the Samsung Tab A7 Lite?

In the midst of the world feeling the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak, there is a market that is predicted to see noticeable growth – the global market for tablets. It's predicted that the global shipments of tablets will see a 45% increase in Q2 2020.

First of all, the predicted growth in the second quarter should be seen through the lens of what happened in the first quarter of this year. Q1 2020 saw tablet shipments decline by 33.6% as a result of a crippled supply chain. So, the otherwise impressive  45% growth can be seen as the market recovering what it lost in the first months of 2020.

Through the recent twists and turns, Apple remains the largest shipper of tablets – with Samsung coming second and Huawei third. However, Lenovo was successful in snatching the fourth place from Microsoft, something that is said to be the result of Lenovo's focus on educational tablets when many people are learning from home.

These predictions are made by DigiTimes and can be read in their full HERE.

High refresh rate portable monitors seem to be making the headlines in 2020, MSI just recently launched a couple of ultra-slim, portable gaming monitors and now Asus has officially released its take on what a portable gaming monitor should consist of.

Asus has added a 17.3-inch portable gaming display to its ROG Strix monitor series. The ROG Strix XG17AHPE was first unveiled in mid 2019 and is expected to be available to purchase soon. The new portable monitor from Asus is designed for gamers to hone their skills while on the move and features some pretty impressive specs that we usually expect from high-end desktop gaming monitors.

ROG Strix XG17AHPE is equipped with a 17.3-inch IPS panel that provides stunning image clarity and true to life colour accuracy. A 3ms pixel response time, 240Hz adaptive sync refresh rate paired with a built-in 7800 mAh battery and an ultra-thin design, means that gamers can enjoy smooth and tear-free high FPS gaming anywhere they choose.

With a 17.3-inch, 1920×1080 resolution screen, the ROG Strix XG17AHPE provides 10% more visual real estate compared to traditional portable monitors. Thanks to an IPS panel, the monitor produces 100% sRGB colour accuracy with a 1,000:1 contrast ratio and wide 178-degree viewing angles to provide beautiful image quality and minimum distortion.

The 240Hz refresh rate and 3ms response time will give gamers the upper hand in fast-paced titles such as first-person shooters while providing a fluid and tear-free experience via adaptive-sync technology. In terms of connectivity, the Asus ROG Strix XG17AHPE features DisplayPort via USB Type-C and a Micro HDMI 2.0 port. Acer has launched a new series of ConceptD 7 Ezel laptops aimed at professional design, the ConceptD 7 Ezel series includes a 4K UHD IPS display, mounted on Acer’s new Ezel hinge design that allows for various usage modes to easily display on-screen content to colleges or clients. The 4K IPS display features 400-nit brightness, 100% Adobe RGB colour gamut and is calibrated for PANTONE Matching System colours.

Acer says the ConceptD 7 Ezel will include the 10th generation Intel Core H-series processor in the near future, with Nvidia RTX graphics and up to 32 GB DDR4 RAM to plough through those intense workloads. Another interesting feature of the ConceptD 7 Ezel is the included Wacom PMR pen which can be used to write or draw pretty much anything on screen. The Acer ConceptD 7 Ezel range will be available in Europe in May 2020, starting at €2,699.

Continuing with the ConceptD series, Acer has a couple of desktop system on display too, the ConceptD 700 workstations have had a few little updates, such as USB charging while the system is turned off and a redesign of the aesthetics, with a new wood effect top panel. ConceptD 700 desktops feature Intel Xeon E processors and up to Nvidia Quadro RTX 4000 graphics. The Acer ConceptD 700 workstation will be available in Europe from March 2020 starting from €1,699.

Acer also showcased a new range of Predator gaming laptops that feature a 300Hz 1080p 1ms IPS display from AU Optronics in the Predator Triton 500. We should expect to see the 300Hz display equipped Predator Triton 500 become available in a new model including Intel 10th generation processors when they become available.

A new range of Acer Travelmate laptops were on display too, the Travelmate series features Intel 10th generation Comet Lake processors, not 10th generation Intel Ice lake just yet. Acer Travelmate are mid-range laptops for business type use, the P2 version is MIL STD-810G tested for durability. The whole Travelmate range features excellent battery life with fast charging support, they are thin and lightweight which makes them easy to carry around.

Acer had a couple of Project Athena laptops on show during the suite tour too, the Acer Swift 3 range includes a 13.5-inch 3:2 ratio 2K display designed for content creation type usage. The Swift 3 series is available with Intel 10th generation Ice Lake processors and weighs in at just 1.2Kg, making them ultra-portable. An AMD version is available too, featuring a Ryzen 4000 up to 4-core processor with a 16:9 1080p display, geared more towards media consumption use and should be a little cheaper than the Intel versions.

The new Acer Spin 3 series is a 2-in1 range of laptops for personal use that can be operated in either a default laptop mode or as a tablet with a Wacom AES 2.0 stylus pen. The Spin 3 series feature 10th generation Intel Ice Lake Core i5 processors with Iris Plus or Intel UHD graphics. The Acer Spin 5 series is a higher-end version featuring 10th generation Intel Ice Lake Core i7 processors and high-end Iris Plus graphics. The Spin 5 series is equipped with a 13.5-inch 2K 3:2 ratio display which adds 18% more vertical space compared to the Spin 3 16:9 display.

The Acer Spin 5 series will be available in Europe from March 2020 starting at €999, the Spin 3 series is due to be available in February 2020 priced from €649.

KitGuru says: Acer seems to have put a big focus on displays for its 2020 laptop ranges. A 300Hz display on the Predator gaming laptop range will certainly interest first-person shooter gamers. What do you guys think to these new laptop systems unveiled by Acer at CES?

Sharkoon has introduced new Mobile DAC and Mobile DAC PD devices to its peripherals range. The new audio converters are compatible with popular Android-based mobile devices and deliver high-resolution audio amplification for headsets with a TRRS connection.

In addition to providing audio amplification, the new Sharkoon Mobile DACs provide quality voice transmission via an integrated microphone input for podcasters and streamers to benefit from. Both the Mobile DAC and Mobile DAC PD are equipped with a USB-C connection for compatibility with modern smartphones and tablets. The Mobile DAC features a short cable to avoid annoying tangles and thanks to a compact design, both devices easily fit into a pocket for ultra-portable use.

The Sharkoon Mobile DAC PD features a TTRS port and USB Type-C male plug but also includes a female USB Type-C socket too. This female USB-C socket allows the device to be connected to a smartphone or tablet, providing power pass through to charge the connected device while it is in use with a power supply of up to 60 watts.

The Mobile DAC and Mobile DAC PD also have a switchable hardware equaliser allowing the linearly tuned sound to be further customised by the included presets, with accentuated bass or treble settings available to choose from. According to Sharkoon, both devices provide a sampling frequency of 96KHz at 24 Bit, with a signal to noise ratio of 100 decibels, which is confirmed by the Japan Audio Society.

The Sharkoon Mobile DAC and Mobile DAC PD are available to purchase now with an MSRP of €14.99 and €19.99 respectively.

It would appear that Chinese companies love to be inspired by Apple’s hardware designs. Following the recent leaks that Xiaomi is planning on releasing a smartwatch which is heavily inspired by the Apple Watch, Huawei appears to also be looking at Apple for inspiration – this time for its upcoming tablet.

Huawei has consistently released a series of midrange Android tablets under the MediaPad brand, but it looks like this next tablet, rumoured to be called the MatePad Pro, will be targeting the high-end market. High-end tablets require a high-end design, and so Huawei has seemingly turned to Apple for help in that aspect.

The leaked images, brought to light by 91mobiles, show a tablet that looks suspiciously similar to the iPad Pro, except for the fact that it features a hole-punch camera in the corner. The leaked images also show a collection of accessories, likewise seemingly plucked straight from Apple’s design lab.

(Source: @evleaks/Twitter)

The tablet will release with a magnetic keyboard accessory which to no one’s surprise, looks like Apple’s magnetic keyboard. The tablet will also feature a stylus, which could easily be mistaken for the second generation Apple pencil, save for its silver colour. The stylus appears to attach magnetically to either the side or the top of the tablet.

The rumoured specs for the tablet include an in-display fingerprint scanner, Huawei’s Kirin 990 SoC, 8GB of ram, and up to 256GB of storage. The tablet is expected to launch early next year.

The post Google is giving up on making tablets first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
Google hasn't exactly been a serious player in the tablet market over the last few years. The company most recently launched the Pixel Slate as a Chrome OS powered alternative to the iPad and Microsoft Surface with its own detachable keyboard but it looks like we won't be seeing a follow up any time soon, as Google is bowing out of the tablet market for now.

According to a Google spokesperson, the company has officially stopped production on two yet to be announced tablets that it had in the works. One of these was going to be a successor to the Pixel Slate but it will no longer be coming out. Instead, Google will be focusing its resources on Pixelbook laptops instead and leaving tablets behind.

While Chrome OS tablets will no longer be coming from Google itself, the company will continue to support the existing Pixel Slate with software updates and is going to continue working on Chrome OS.

Google has never quite found its footing in the tablet market. Back in the Nexus days, Google did find success with the Nexus 7 and partners like Samsung and HTC did produce Nexus-branded tablets at one point in time. However, once Google shifted from Nexus to the new Pixel line, the Pixel C and Pixel Slate struggled to gain ground while the smartphone side of things seemed to sell fairly well.

KitGuru Says: Google could return to tablets again someday but for now, it looks like we won't be seeing any more. Interestingly, two new tablets were planned to launch at some point this year but quality assurance tests caused a change of heart.

With the discontinuation of the Shield Tablet last year and Shield Portable seemingly no longer on sale, Nvidia looked to have given up its portable gaming efforts. This could change in the near future, as code within the Shield Experience software suggests that Nvidia could be planning to re-enter the market with a 2-in-1 device.

Nvidia hasn’t released a new iteration of its tablet in five years, leaving its operating system stuck on Android 7.0 Nougat. Instead, focus has shifted to the Shield TV, which has been provided with frequent updates. Within the latest patch, XDA Developers found mention of a device codenamed ‘Mystique’, supposedly a new 2-in-1 tablet that Nvidia has in development.

It isn’t certain where in development this might be beyond a simple concept, but accompanying details suggest that it will be powered by Nvidia’s Xavier processor. This chip is built to be versatile, optimised for video performance but simultaneously used for autonomous machines.

As expected, a line of code refers to software called “NvDtExp,” which stands for NVIDIA Desktop Experience. Alongside the reported Desktop mode, Mystique is said to feature a Tablet interface and a third Dynamic mode that presumably sits somewhere between the two.

Last year, Nvidia stated that it had no plans to reinvest in the tablet market after the lukewarm reception to its previous devices, but remained open to the concept if it could provide something new to customers. The aforementioned lines of code clearly aren't meant for the Shield TV, Nvidia’s only device on the market, meaning something new could very well be on the way.

KitGuru Says: It’s entirely possible that Nvidia could be observing the success of the Nintendo Switch, in which its own custom Tegra CPU resides. While speculation is futile given that nothing has been officially unveiled, the idea of a tablet that can be both docked for connection to an external display or connected to a keyboard when travelling is quite appealing. Would you invest in a new Nvidia tablet if it brought something new to the table?

While Microsoft is throwing a lot of attention towards its high-end business-based Surface Hub 2, it’s also looking to tackle tablets for the everyday user. Reports suggest that this will be a renewed effort to rival Apple’s iPad, meaning Microsoft will be entering the market with Surface tablets costing half that of previous models.

The high-end Surface Pro range has always been the breadwinner for Microsoft, beating out other premium workplace-standard tablets, however at its $799 price tag, it’s never been equipped to take on Apple’s $329 iPad.

Microsoft gave up its effort to take on Apple’s competitively priced iPad with the Surface 4 series, however the original ARM-powered Surface and Surface 2 were both attempts at scooping its own portion of the market. This continued to fail with the Intel-equipped Surface 3, which inevitably saw discontinuation in 2016.

The company’s supposedly upcoming $400 Surface tablet is meant to buck this trend, according to Bloomberg, as Microsoft ditches is signature square aesthetic for a friendlier, rounder design. It will also reportedly drop the Surface Connect port in favour of the increasingly standardised USB Type-C.

Other rumours claim that the new Surface tablet will shed 20 percent of its weight, with its battery lasting up to 10 hours. It is unknown whether or not storage will be expandable with Microsoft’s increased cloud efforts, but 64GB and 128GB versions are planned, alongside one sporting LTE connectivity which we’ve seen from the company in the past.

KitGuru Says: I managed to get my hands on a Surface Pro 4 for half price last year and I do appreciate the machine, even if it does stumble here and there. Hopefully Microsoft picks up its reliability moving forward too, as its Surface range doesn’t have the best reputation. Would you be interested in a cheaper Surface tablet?

The post MWC 2018: Huawei announces ultra-portable laptop plus new tablets first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
It's often new smartphones which grab the headlines during MWC, but this year Huawei has bucked the trend by announcing a brand-new laptop to its MateBook family, while a couple of new MediaPad tablets have also been unveiled by the Chinese company.

The main announcement was undoubtedly the revealing of the MateBook X Pro. The successor to last year's MateBook X – which was actually Huawei's first venture into the laptop market – the MateBook X Pro looks like a fantastic device. I know because I was able to get hands-on with one last Thursday at a media pre-briefing in London. Here's everything you need to know, along with some early thoughts.

Note: if the above gallery is not displaying properly, you may need to disable your ad block software as they can interfere with out display code.

In a nutshell, the MateBook X Pro is a premium laptop that looks to strike a perfect balance between performance and portability. It weighs a mere 1.33KG, and at its thickest point it measures only 14.6mm. Despite that, the aluminium unibody feels quite sturdy and strong, while it also has a unique sandblasted finish which feels great to the touch.

Its display was the real kicker for me, though, as not only does it have incredibly tiny bezels (with a 91% screen-to-body ratio) but the 13.9-inch panel is also razor sharp thanks to its 3000×2000 resolution. With a new touchscreen interface, as well as a 1500:1 contrast ratio and 100% sRGB coverage it looks great for work as well as play. From my time with it, it also looks seriously bright, but I'd have to verify that in a different environment as we were in a fairly dingy room.

In terms of components, we are told to expect three different models – i5/8GB/256GB for €1499, i7/8GB/512GB for €1699, and i7/16GB/512GB for €1899. The i5 in question is the i5-8250U, while the i7 is the i7-8550U. The SSDs will be of the NVMe variety.

Lastly, other key features include a fingerprint-enabled power button which should be able to detect your fingerprint as you turn the device on, and thus remove the need for a Windows log-in page. Huawei told us a cold boot to the desktop takes just 7.8 seconds – which, if we can verify to be accurate, is hugely impressive. There's also support for second-gen Dolby Atmos technology via a new quad-speaker setup, a funky recessed webcam hidden between the F6 and F7 keys, as well as a spill-proof back-lit keyboard.

We'll be getting a MateBook X Pro in for review very shortly so keep your eyes out for that.

Elsewhere, we were also shown three new tablets which come under the MediaPad M5 banner. First of all, we have 8.4in and 10.8in MediaPad M5 SKUs, but there was also a MediaPad M5 Pro designed for productivity – only in the 10.8in form-factor, however.

All three tablets have 2560×1600 displays, aluminium unibodies and Kirin 960 chips with integrated machine learning. For the tablet photographers out there, a front-facing 8MP camera and a 13MP rear shooter should hopefully keep you happy as well.

In term's of the 10.8in Pro model, this keeps the same core spec as the non-Pro model, however Huawei has designed a new pen for the device, dubbed the M Pen. This features 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity with support for tilting and shading as well. The M pen comes in the box with the MediaPad M5 Pro, but it is not compatible with the other non-Pro tablets.

Pricing for the 8.4in model starts at €349 and goes up to €499 depending on storage and LTE connectivity. The 10.8in model starts at €399 and goes up to €549.

KitGuru says: Getting a look at hardware before its been officially announced is always fun, and I was particularly impressed with the MateBook X Pro during my time with it. The new MediaPad M5 tablets also look like solid offerings, so be sure to check back for our reviews in the near future.

Consumer Reports concluded last year that 25 percent of Microsoft’s Surface owners suffer issues within the first two years, particularly after the warranty has expired beyond the first year. It seems these problems are still continuing as Surface Pro 4 owners are reporting issues with a “flickering screen.”

The glitch seems so persistent that an entire website dubbed “Flickergate” has been dedicated to the 1,800+ victims of the Surface Pro 4 problem. The aim is to give a voice to those that have contributed to the wasted $2.8 million on faulty devices and their refurbished solutions.

“We are customers of Microsoft who have invested $1500+ on new Surface Pro devices which have developed screen flickering, rendering the devices unusable,” the website explains. “The flickering normally occurs 1 year after purchase when the warranty is already expired. This means that owners are forced to pay $800 for an out-of-warranty exchange from Microsoft. However, many users experience the same flickering on their refurbished Surface Pro replacements.”

ipadpro-surfacepro4-renders-e1477069655587.jpg

As the website explains, there is currently no software fix for the problem with Microsoft resorting to full replacements as a means to an end. Unfortunately, the same issue occurred with up to 4 consecutive replacements, showing how commonplace the problem can be.

Apparently the only fix in circulation is a temporary one in which victims need to cool off. Literally. George Visvikis posted the results on YouTube, stating that ten minutes in the freezer can lead to 30 mins of flicker-free fun. It’s not entirely practical, but if you intend to try then make sure to cover the device in a waterproof case of some kind.

The whole aim of Flickergate was to draw attention to how widespread the situation is, sign a petition and get an official response from Microsoft, which unsurprisingly took quite some time. The company addressed the situation in a statement to The Verge earlier in the week, explaining that it is “monitoring the situation closely,” and that those affected should contact Microsoft Support.

Unfortunately, those experiencing the issues outside of the warranty period, which is most victims, will have a hard road ahead in getting some form of compensation or replacement without it costing another pretty penny.

KitGuru Says: I have experienced some minor issues on my Surface Pro 4, but nothing that would impede my experience to a degree that customer service is needed. Then again, I do have another few months before that year mark is hit. Have you experienced bugs or problems with your Surface device?

The post Acer Switch 5 Review – Convertible Tablet with Liquid Cooling first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
If you’re reading KitGuru, chances are you’re familiar with the Microsoft Surface Pro. While it was by no means the first tablet/laptop hybrid to run the Redmond company’s own OS, one might go so far as to say that it has done for the Windows convertible what the iPhone did for mobile phones. As such, it has spawned a host of imitators which have emulated the tablet, keyboard cover and pen formula with varying degrees of success. Acer enters this fray with its snazzily-named Switch 5, which sits below the yet-to-be-launched Switch 7 flagship in both specs and price but matches up quite nicely to the reigning Surface Pro 2017.

At first glance the Acer Switch 5 (in our case UK model number SW512-52-58Q4) is a very interesting proposition. Like most Surface Pro competitors, the tablet comes bundled with both its backlit keyboard cover and metal active stylus in the box, whereas Microsoft’s hybrid charges you a considerable additional chunk of change for each.

Base specs are also pretty decent with a 12in 2160 x 1440 IPS touch display, passively-cooled – look Ma, no fans! – dual-core seventh-gen Core i5 CPU plus integrated Intel graphics, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD, which makes many rivals’ 128GB standard storage offerings seem a tad stingy in comparison.

Even connectivity is decent and arguably superior to Microsoft’s premium Windows tablet, as the USB-C 3.1 port found next to the Switch 5’s standard USB-A 3.0 connector is a tad more flexible than the DisplayPort video output adorning the Surface Pro. All of this is crammed into a neat metal and plastic package that remains below 1kg in weight, though adding the keyboard and power supply does take that closer to 1.5kg than we would like.

However, considering the whole bundle can be yours for under £900, compared to around £1,200 for an equivalently-specced Surface 2017 tablet (not forgetting the extra £240 for its pen and keyboard) and with this Switch’s fanless nature meaning there’s no hot air blowing around and no distracting operating noise, we’re willing to forgive a little more strain on the wrist or shoulder.

The question, of course, is whether Acer’s weighty little contestant has what it takes to compete in every other department despite its modest price tag.

Despite the endless rumours of new Surface devices, rumours arose last week claiming that Microsoft might potentially ditch its flagship range by 2019. Corporate vice president of devices Panos Panay has spoken out against this, claiming that it’s just a “tabloid rumour of the week.”

Fans of the Surface line of devices entered a panic after competing businesses came out of the woodwork to bash Microsoft’s leading brand for its devices. Chief executive of analyst company Canalys, Steve Brazier was the first to speak out at its Canalys Channels Forum event, stating that “the Surface performance is choppy… overall they are not making money. It doesn’t make sense for them to be in this business.”

Since then, Lenovo’s COO Gianfranco Lanci echoed the sentiment, going into detail as to why Microsoft should drop the branding. “Microsoft is making a lot of money on cloud, making a lot of money on Windows and Office, but losing a lot of money on devices,” said Lanci. “And frankly speaking, it is difficult to see why they should keep losing money.”

Luckily, Surface enthusiasts can rest easy for now as this is “so far from the truth” and that people simply have to look at Microsoft’s $900 million loss due to the Surface RT under-performing back in 2013 that the company still has faith in its devices. “There was no loss of confidence,” explains Panay. “There was a real belief in how we can change the world.”

And that’s just what they did with its 2017 revision of the brand, along with expected devices such as the LTE-enabled Surface Pro tablet, which has a rumoured release date of December 1st and a near certain full unveiling during its Future Decoded Event during the 31st October and 1st November.

KitGuru Says: It’s reassuring to know Microsoft’s stance on the matter, but of course the company wouldn’t reveal plans to ditch any of its lines until it was ready. I like my Surface Pro 4, but can’t say it’s the machine I’d hoped it would be when I bought it. Do you own a Microsoft Surface device?

Way back in 2014, Microsoft was planning to expand its Surface tablet line with the launch of a Surface Mini. The tiny tablet was supposed to launch alongside the Surface Pro 3 that year but just a few weeks before the scheduled unveiling, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and former Nokia CEO, Stephen Elop, agreed to cancel the Surface Mini entirely.

The Surface Mini was an 8-inch tablet with relatively good specs at the time. It had a 1440×1080 display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 1GB of RAM and 32GB of storage- not great by 2017 standards but back in early 2014 it would have managed just fine. In terms of design, it kept the general style we have come to expect from a Surface, including the kickstand at the back. However, there was a rubberised texture on the back it seems. Windows Central managed to get the scoop on this one, obtaining images of the cancelled tablet, which you can see below:

Given that the Surface Mini used an ARM processor, it did rely on Windows RT, which ended up being very unpopular due to various restrictions on app compatibility.

In the end, the Surface Mini being pulled may have been a blessing in the long run. Mini-tablets haven't really stood the test of time, Google had some success with the Nexus 7 but eventually stopped bothering and you can say the same for Apple and the iPad Mini, which hasn't seen an update in years.

KitGuru Says: I am always intrigued to see cancelled projects like this and get the backstory. While the Surface Mini would have been interesting to see, I doubt it would have sold well, especially now that mini-tablets have essentially been replaced by large smartphones.

Every now and then, a campaign pops-up on Kickstarter that really sets itself apart and gets the internet talking. Superscreen appears to fit into that category perfectly as this week, the smartphone mirroring gadget smashed its $50,000 goal and is now sitting at over $1.1 million pledged at the time of writing.

For those out of the loop, Superscreen is essentially a 10.1-inch, QHD tablet-like display. We say tablet-like, as internally, there is little going on, instead, it acts as a larger screen for your smartphone by mirroring apps and other content.

As Transcendent Designs puts it, not everyone actually needs a full size tablet as most smartphones these days are more than capable. However, tablets do have a nicer, larger display and tend to be more comfortable for things like reading or watching video.

With Superscreen, you won't have to spend hundreds of pounds on a fancy tablet just to get a bigger screen. Instead, you can just wirelessly connect your phone to the Superscreen, and instantly you have a bigger, more usable interface to work with.

For many, this could be a big deal. I know I like to watch Netflix on the train, but without a tablet, the experience is not too satisfying. However, with Superscreen, I could easily mirror the content onto the bigger screen for a more enjoyable viewing experience.

For those who are interested, the Superscreen has the following specification:

    • 2560×1600 QHD 2K Display
    • 4GB RAM, 2GHz Quad Core processor
    • Size – 241.8 mm x 172.6 mm x 8.0 mm (9.52″ x 6.79″ x 0.31″)
    • Weight – 450g (0.99 lbs)
    • 2MP front and 5MP back high-res cameras
    • 88 dB built-in dual high-fidelity speakers that play while phone is on mute
    • USB-C 3.1 connector on the bottom
    • Uses 70% less battery than if you were actually using your smartphone in hand
    • Battery – 6,000 mAhr/3.7V/12 hours
    • Built in 4.1. Bluetooth so you can sync your already existing devices
    • Touch recognition technology to compliment Touch ID devices

The best thing, though, is that it could be yours for as little as $99. To check-out the Kickstarter campaign, head over using THIS link.

KitGuru says: The Superscreen looks pretty exciting, and it has already gone well beyond its initial goal on Kickstarter. We'll be getting one to review as soon as the first units comes off the production line, so stay tuned for that.

If you own an Nvidia Shield tablet and were wondering whether or not you would be getting the Android 7.0 Nougat update, then you don't need to wait any longer as the update is now rolling out. This update was up in the air for the Shield tablet as the hardware initially released back in 2014 but it seems that Nvidia is intent on supporting its tablet owners with new updates for 2017.

The Nvidia Shield Tablet originally released back in 2014 but was ‘re-released' in December 2015 alongside the Android Marshmallow update.

Android Nougat comes as part of the Shield's 5.0 software update, which adds support for new peripherals such as the new Shield Remote, which was revealed alongside the new Shield TV. Obviously, the standard Nougat features will also be implemented, including app multitasking, Doze mode and more.

KitGuru Says: One of Android Nougat's big improvements is standby battery life, which would benefit the Shield tablet greatly. Do any of you still own a Shield tablet? Will you be installing the Nougat update?

We have already had confirmation that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S8 would be a no show at the Mobile World Congress later next month but Samsung may still have something to show off at the show after all. Rather than its flagship smartphone, Samsung may make an appearance with its next flagship tablet, the Galaxy Tab S3.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S3's existence has already been confirmed through a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) filing. The filing doesn't reveal too much, but it shows off the back of the tablet and the fact that this tablet has already been registered with the FCC hints towards a potential reveal at MWC on the 28th of February.

Aside from that, rumours are pointing towards what we may find under the hood of this tablet. Powering the Galaxy Tab S3 there is said to be an Exynos 7420 eight core SoC, which previously featured in the Galaxy S6 smartphone. There may also be a fingerprint scanner and 4GB of RAM to help with multitasking duties. Other rumours hint to two sizes, a smaller 8-inch form factor and a larger 9.7/10-inch one.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Samsung might not be showing up to MWC with a smartphone this year but it looks like we may get a peek at the company's new tablet. Have any of you guys used a Samsung tablet in the past? I have always glossed over them so I'd be interested to see how well received they actually are.

It seems that Microsoft's Surface Pro 3 is still proving to be an issue for the company and its customers alike as battery issues keep cropping up. Earlier this year, Microsoft patched a bug that caused the Surface Pro 3 to incorrectly display battery percentages but now another battery-related problem has come to light, with some users unable to charge their tablets.

Microsoft has two suppliers for its Surface Pro 3 batteries, the previous bug affected models using a Simplo battery while this new problem is affecting those who have a model with an LG battery. Users with this specific model have apparently been finding themselves unable to charge, causing the tablet to shut down when not connected to power.

So far, Microsoft has been quiet on these new issues but is apparently “aware” of the problem. Hopefully Microsoft will have an update for the affected users soon. We will post an update when that happens.

KitGuru Says: The Surface Pro 3 is mostly sold as a device for productivity and issues like this really detract from that. Hopefully any Surface Pro 3 owners can get a fix soon. Do any of you guys have a Surface? Have you had any issues recently?

Nvidia first launched its original Shield Tablet back in 2014 and since then, it has been supported with regular updates and features like Game Stream and GeForce Now have improved significantly. However, it is about time for a hardware update and it looks like there might be one on the way soon as a mysterious Nvidia tablet recently went through FCC certification.

A new Nvidia tablet passed the Federal Communication Commission’s tests on the 15th of July. The tablet sports the model number P2523 and while we don’t know anything in terms of exact hardware specifications, we do know that its form factor will be very similar with an 8-inch screen. Exact dimensions are 8.6 x 4.8 x 0.3 inches, which means it will have slightly thinner bezels than the original Shield.

    NV_SHIELD_Tablet_SHIELD_Hub_app-e1415877421561

Finally, we know that the new tablet will support both 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi bands. It really isn’t much information to go on, but it at least confirms that Nvidia is working on a new tablet, perhaps with a launch planned for later this year once Android Nougat launches, though that is just speculation on my part.

KitGuru Says: While the original Nvidia Shield tablet is still a competent device today, it would be nice to see Nvidia release a tablet based on the Maxwell or Pascal architecture due to the increased performance per watt. Do any of you own a Shield tablet at the moment? Would you upgrade to a newer model?

It looks like we may already have an idea of what to expect from Microsoft's upcoming Surface Pro 5 tablet as new information came to light this week, pointing out some specifications for the upcoming Windows tablet. Upgrades coming include an Ultra HD display, a new Intel Kaby Lake CPU and 16GB of RAM.

The initial report comes from Mobipicker, citing manufacturing sources in China who have supposedly been accurate in the past. The report goes on to say that the Surface Pro 5 will offer a 4K display as an upgrade option for those with the cash, while most of them will probably ship with a standard 2K display.

    surface-2-angle-stand-640x353

On top of that, there is a nod to Microsoft using an Intel Kaby Lake processor in the Surface Pro 5, which will offer a bit of an improvement over Skylake while still being made on the 14nm process. There will also be a bigger battery for longer usage and 16GB of RAM.

The source also says that the Surface Pro 5 won't enter production until the end of the year, with availability expected in early 2017. This lines up with a rumour we heard just this week that suggested that Intel's new Kaby Lake CPUs might not arrive until early 2017.

KitGuru Says: As always with anonymous sources, take this information with a grain of salt as it may not end up being accurate. That said, if all of this ends up being true, then the Surface Pro 5 should be quite a compelling tablet for those that require that level of power in that form factor.

Update: Nvidia has begun rolling out the Android Marshmallow update to Shield tablet owners once again. The update was pulled earlier this month due to a bug causing WiFi to periodically disconnect for some owners. At the time, some troubleshooting instructions were offered to help but now the proper fixes should all be in place.

Original Story: Earlier this week, Nvidia launched its Android 6.0 Marshmallow update for the original Shield tablet in Europe and the US. However, users quickly discovered a bug in the software, causing issues with WiFi connectivity so now, the update has been pulled for the time being while the issue is worked out. Those that did an update before the bug came to light have some troubleshooting steps that may help them as well.

The bug was reported over on Nvidia's forums, where a customer care representative said: “We have temporarily turned off the OTA update until we understand why a few users are losing WiFi connection after updating their tablet to OTA 4.0.”

Those who were unfortunate enough to already install the update and have their WiFi stop working can try some troubleshooting steps to help. These include rebooting the tablet a few times and failing that, fully charging it and rebooting again. If that doesn't work, a factory reset can be performed and finally, some users apparently got their WiFi working again by leaving the tablet off for several hours.

If these steps fail, then you can help Nvidia narrow down the issue by taking a screenshot of the Advanced WiFi settings page and emailing it to their driver feedback email, which you can find in the forum post, HERE.

KitGuru Says: It is worth noting that this issue affects the original Shield tablet, rather than the Shield K1, which was released over Christmas last year. Are any of you using a Shield tablet? Have you been affected by this issue at all?
