Sony has officially renamed Project Morpheus

Sony has been working on Project Morpheus for quite a while but it looks like the company is now gearing up for its eventual release as the PlayStation 4's virtual reality headset has officially been renamed. We already knew that Project Morpheus wouldn't be Sony's final branding for the project, from now on, the headset will be known as ‘PlayStation VR'.

The name is pretty unexciting compared to Project Morpheus but it gets the point across.

Aside from that, we still don't have any final technical specifications for the headset, though we know that Sony has them nailed down. We also don't have a release date just yet but the headset is expected to arrive by this time next year.

From this point on, Sony's main focus is going to be getting developers on board and coming up with a really strong library of titles for the VR headset when it eventually comes to launch. According to previous statements, the headset itself is basically finished, now Sony is just leaving things in the hands of developers before it launch.

KitGuru Says: PlayStation VR may not be as exciting a name as Project Morpheus was but I suppose it does the job. While plenty of people have been impressed by the PlayStation headset at trade shows, Sony still has some convincing to do in the mass market. Either way, next year will certainly be interesting for games, with Valve, Oculus and Sony all pitching in to virtual reality.
