Cuda is more open source than most people care to admit, so it will not be hard to implement an OpenCL etc program that matches what Nvidia already have

I get the general overwhelming feeling that nvidia appear to be slightly directionless this year. Fermi has been somewhat of a flop, although it is still great. I reckon the guy realises the next generation plan and is jumping ship for brighter prospects.
