Arctic Cooling Accelero XTREME Plus Review (tested with O/C 5870)

The Accelero XTREME plus arrives in a plastic container which should offer adequate protection during shipping. We would like to see Arctic Cooling using a proper box for this as it would offer slightly higher protection if adequately packed. For $65 (around £50) we expect slightly better shipping materials.

The bundle with the Accelero Xtreme Plus contains a mounting frame, screws, AC sticker, manual and power converter cable. The VR001 box can be seen at the bottom of the picture above.

For our surgery today we are using the HIS HD5870 card which is pre overclocked – we reviewed this in June and it scored 8 out of 10. I liked the cooler but found it rather loud as the default fan speeds are configured rather high. This card runs at 875mhz core and 1225mhz on the GDDR5 memory.

The Accelero Xtreme Plus is a sophisicated design which is based around a combination of aluminum with a copper base and heatpipes which run through a very long finned heatsink. The unit has 3 silent 92mm fans on top which are controlled via a simple PCB header. We like the fact they haven't opted for a Molex powered configuration as this can be an extra cable to route when building a system.

Arctic Cooling pre apply a thin layer of thermal paste out of the factory (MX4) but as we want to look at the core we are going to remove it. There are 5 heatpipes on each side running out to the heatsink. It really is a beefy design and looks really impressive up close.
