Samsung 470 Series 256 GB SSD Review

Our sample of the 470 series was supplied in a hard clear plastic box that highlighted the attractive design of the drive. We have been informed by Samsung that the packaging has just been updated so the drive will ship in a more eco-friendly cardboard box.  Along with the updated packaging, Samsung have also altered the included drive bundle so that it includes a complementary copy of Norton Ghost to facilitate the SSD upgrade process.  Samsung have supplied us with a photo of the new packaging which is displayed above.

Samsung have used a combination of metal and plastic for the enclosure of the 470 Series.  The top section of this casing is constructed from silver brushed aluminium which gives the drive a premium look and feel.  Between this top part and the metal part that makes up the bottom of the case there is an orange plastic strip which extends all the way round the drive.

While most solid state drive manufacturers secure their drives together with a series of small screws, Samsung have used a series of plastic clips for the 470 Series.  Even though these make it easier to access the internals of the drive, this won't be important for many users as there isn't really any reason for them to open up the drive.

Inside we find a rather compact PCB which seems to have been designed to comply with the space requirements of a 1.8″ enclosure, presumably so that Samsung can use the same PCB in different drive models.  Samsung are using sixteen of their own 16 GB memory chips in this drive, making up the 256 GB capacity.

These memory chips are arranged so that nine are on one side of the PCB and seven are on the other, with a 64 MB buffer chip on each side.  On one side of the PCB we find the Samsung S3C29MAX01-Y340 controller.  This gives the drive a theoretical sequential read and write speed of 250 MB/s and 230 MB/s respectively.
