Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 gets showcased ahead of MWC

Qualcomm's next generation mobile chipset is known as Snapdragon S4 “Krait” and will integrate a quad core processor, a more advanced Adreno 225 GPU and LTE connectivity. This will be the first major new architecture in a couple of generations of Snapdragon chipsets.

The new System on Chip from Qualcomm is designed to go up against  Texas Instrument's OMAP 5 series, Samsung's new series of Exynos and Nvidia's Tegra 3 chipsets.

With their desire to eventually replace digital cameras with smartphones the Image Signal Processor (ISP) is much improved in Snapdragon S4. Still pictures up to 20 megapixels in size are able to be taken while full HD 1080p video at 30 FPS is supported.

Zero shutter lag will also make an appearance and has already been seen on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Snapdragon S4 will be able to support up to three cameras (two rear facing sensors and one front facing,) for improved 3D smartphones.

Over on the software side of things there is improved autofocus, auto exposure, auto white balance, blink/smile detection, gaze estimation, image stabilisation (video above) and range finding.

As we move into an era of mystical things that aren't always there, augmented reality is supported alongside gesture control (video above.) This will allow for Kinect-like gaming on your smartphone or tablet.

Kitguru says: Qualcomm has laid down their cards; now let's see what OMAP 5 and Samsung's Exynos chipsets have in store for us.
