Well, TBH don't get the 990X. Wait till X79 drops then after that get the best CPU. About the same time the new GPUs ought to be dropping, Nvidia's may be dropping later than AMDs so unless that's important just get the best their is. Also you could go watercooling, temps are SO much lower than air and it can be so much quieter.

I'm with Darkstarr, wait for the New generation parts. The X79 processors in thorey will make the i7-990X look like a chess piece.

Wait for a server grade Dual CPU Motherboard or EVGA's X79 equivalent of their SR2. Snap two top end processors in there and buy the largest power supply money can buy. Then go QUAD SLI or QUAD Crossfire.

Chuck in about 24GB of 2133Mhz RAM
Raid System of 120GB ADATA D500 SSD's
OCZ REVODRIVE anyone?
6TB Mass storage System.
and cry when the power bill arrives.

Right today that would probably be:

EVGA CLASSFIED SR-2
2 x Intel Xeon Processor X5690
4 X EVGA GTX580 QUAD SLI
Buy me a car.
2400MHz RAM
RAID a bunch of SSDs together.
Water cool the whole shebang with a TEC in the loop.

But yeah, I'd wait until X79.

Pics or it never happened.

Talking of i7 990x chips on the old x58 I'm just hoping the price on these monsters is going to drop. It's a dead socket, but as probably most of you know, I bought a cheap Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R mobo to replace my almost 3 year old crap Dell mobo.

I would love to replace my 4 core 8 thread i7 940 with one of the 6 core 12 thread chips, especially the performance ones with unlocked multiplier.

They are still prohibitively expensive though even though x58 boards are cheap as vendors want to clear them out for the new x79.

Hopefully Amazon will drastically drop prices soon. They already have for the i7 950 and i7 960, but it's pointless me getting one of those as I'm already at 3.68GHz on the 940.

Thanks DS. the $400 dollar saving is very nice indeed, but it's still too much for me to spend on this x58 rig. Especially considering I was planning on building an Ivy Bridge based system later this year.

Even that might have to wait until 2013 as I've recently bought a new mobo, a new case, another new CPU cooler, extra fans, and a Geldid GPU cooler with extra speed control. This is far more than I planned, but I think it's worth it. Even with my old i7 940 my new improved (now non-dell and overclockable) rig is running fast and smooth. It's actually like having a new system in many ways - it's just the old lga 1366/x58.

If/when the i7990x or 980x, or even the 6 core i7 970 drop to the $300 range, I'll pick one up. This probably means that I never will - although the 970 could well reach that level.
