It's good that you are enjoying the game, because I really like RPGs. When I'm done with Skyrim I'm going to get the Witcher 2, I've been waiting to play it since it got out.
You play RPGs like me. I put close to 200 hours into Oblivion.

Still haven't had time to get into Skyrim yet, but I have put a few hours in to compare the Xbox version to the PC. I'm running the PC version with everything as high as it will go, and even tried out a few Nexus Mods.

There is no doubt that visually the PC version blows the console away, especially with the excellent mods available. I've only tried two, forgot the names, but they did improve the graphics even more, one of them was a texture pack.

It's more the subtleties that are missed on the Xbox than the over all feeling which is very good on both. But there is no doubt that the much better draw distance, better textures, ability to fix the frame rate (with a mod) and more "going on," in the PC version make it the version to get.

Still, if you haven't seen the PC version maxed out, there would be no complaining about the console version. It still looks great and must have taken some very clever programming to squeeze so much out of the 7 year old hardware.

Default Another patch?

Just read this: Skyrim patch 1.4 coming to PC next week, delayed for PS3 and Xbox 360

From the few hours I've spent with the game there was nothing wrong with it. (Patched to vs.1.3)

Tomex, you have spent a fair bit of time with Skyrim. What do you reckon? I mean what needs patching? Just curious.

Hey what's up andyg?!
Some missions need fixing and I remember that I had a lot of filled soul gems stored away and when I moved them back to my inventory they appeared as empty (strange, now it doesn't happen any more and no new patch was released), and before the last patch (the one that let you use 4 GB) the game used to crash when I fast traveled between far places, but things are quite good now, some minor problems, but good. It should be more difficult though, I'm playing in master and I'm to powerful now.

Thanks Tomex, that's good to know.

Now I've just got to find time to really get into this game. Glad 4GB is now native to the game, that means one of the mods to increase from 2GB to 4GB is no longer needed.

Talking of mods, do you use any? Also, I guess most of them will have to be re-written or become irrelevant after patch 1.4 (it seems a lot of the mods are patch specific which is understandable)

I tried two. One adds more textures - it worked well, and the other allows you to set a max frame rate which is very useful and functions as a kind of advanced V-sync. I always use V-sync as my overclocked GTX580 and overclocked i7990x push every game I've tried over 60fps in parts at max settings, and the one thing I can't stand is screen "tearing."

Cheers!

Hi andyg. I went to skyrimnexus for the mods, I don't remember all of the mods I used, because I'm in my parents home, where I have net (in my house I use mobile net from Vodafone 10€ for 10 hours so I need to have rational use of it), so I can't consult my pc. So here they are (some I don't know if they improved anything because I didn't compare with the original version of the game):
-Nicer snowflakes
-Detailed bodies
-Enhanced distant terrain
-RWT realistic water textures
-No more blocky faces
-High quality eyes
-Realistic smoke and embers
-Skyrim sunglare V3

I used the nVidia guide too, to improve the game (and another guide that I can't remember, but I think it was in skyrimnexus). And I changed stuff in the .ini files (I used the guides for that).
There are a lot of new mods that seem cool, I was looking at them when I was writing this message, check this: Skyrim Nexus - Skyrim Mods and community

Default Skyrim & mods for it.

Thanks Tomex! Actually Skyrim Nexus is what I have bookmarked already. They seem to be the place to go for mods - especially Skyrim ones.

Sounds like we used some of the same ones. They do improve the visuals. I can vouch for that as I compared with and without. There really is some good stuff (mods) available among the crap.

I always forget the long and technical names that seems to be fashionable to use, and I live in only one place! Also haven't even played the game at all for 2 weeks now due to lack of time.

Can't wait to get into it though, and I'll certainly re-add the best mods too. The texture one I was on about covered a few things, some of which you mentioned above.

Cheers!

Yeah, I just switched on Steam and it started to auto download. Still had some old Mods in the installation directory, but doesn't look like that caused any problems.

P.S. Phew, a lot of changes. I'm kinda glad I held off for so long as the list of fixes to "buggy" side quests is fairly long. And I like playing the side quests as much as the main story in all the Elder scrolls games to date.

Before really embarking on the main quest, in the past two games I've become grand master of at least one Guild, plus plenty of alchemy before I starting feel it's time to get on with main story!

Many (perhaps too many leading to wife neglect ) hours of fun!!

Andyg, don't neglect your wife it's not worth it, it's just a game in the end!
Now I'm getting bored with the game because a spent too much time improving my character and doing side quests, and now I'm too powerful.

Very true Tomex. (about the wife)

I've also experienced overly powerful characters way before the end of the main storyline in a few games too.

It's the initial enthusiasm, and desire to level up and finish side quests, but when the level aimed for is reached games start to become boring. That's what happened to me in Fallout 3. Put in countless hours, became almost invincible, and then had to force myself to finish the main story line.

Strange thing that.

I think I'll balance main quest with side quests in Skyrim, and not totally neglect the main story as I usually do for the first 50 or so hours of a great game. That way if I reach that point of leveling up I was aiming for I will be at the stage where I can finish the main storyline in just a few hours.

Funny, leveling up is an aspect I really love in such games, but once achieved a game loses it's strong appeal to a fair degree.

Not sure if it will work out that way for me in Skyrim though. Think I'll play on a high difficulty.
