Question Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop

I may not know enough to even ask the question right:

It's for customer machine... I am building a new and fairly powerful computer, SSD/HDD combo, lots of RAM and 2600K in the 4.2GHz range.

Now about that graphics card. I am told that for folks who do not do HD video editing, a SuperIncredible3DCard is not necessary. I don't want a GPU bottleneck either, so the minimum performance should be observed,

But it is the the color accuracy, ease and consistency of calibration, that I wish to be sure of.

I ask because Adobe is the standard, I use only Gimp, it is not my field!

Any help would be appreciated, I looked for some Adobe enthusiast forums, and all the suggestions were way out of date, for the computer recommendations.

TIA,
Bruce Hinton

A pretty basic graphics card but with an ample amount of graphics memory mainly for Photoshop will suffice(1GB, or more if oftenly working on huge documents). As far as color accuracy the graphics card is barely involved over a digital connection to the screen. For serious Illustrator/Indesign work, physical print color charts are still indespensible.

For fluid performance in Photoshop's OpenGL accelerated mode in recent versions I've had to go into the performance settings and choose to run OpenGL in "basic mode" with AMD Radeon graphics cards. The up side is that I haven't encountered any missing feature while running in that mode so it might not matter, but supposedly (and someone would have to verify) that is not necessary with recent Nvidia cards. Some Photoshop users on the other hand turn off OpenGL acceleration altogether, thereby missing some spiffy functions like smooth zooming but also circumventing any limit concerning available graphics memory. With such a setup even integrated graphics like the in the Intel Sandy Bridge CPU's are perfectly fine too.

I am running both CS5 and Paintshop on a modest Dell at the moment, runs fine. Its the bloody batching that kills and if your patient its fine.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

That batching is likely one of his gripes that got us talking about the build a few months ago.

He travels the world, shoot tons with the big Canons, plus some with rented 45(?)Mpx imaging chips.

He has never specifically said where all the slowdowns were, (more photography than software oriented), but wants it fixed!

If you're lucky at least he'll be willing to pay well for that something to get better.

Fortunately he already has paid well. Wee bit more to come too.

I learned many years ago, that when they ask, "half now and half when it arrives?", to just tell them when they could afford the second half of the stuff, to let me know and I'd get it all ordered at once!

Almost invariably, the checkbook promptly comes out, and they fill in the full amount!

Most assuredly! I can never get enough of the good stuff.

Can you put them up on a site you have access to, as a downloadable .zip? I download at 34Mb so size is no issue that method. You might consider posting them in the Photography thread, but that takes up a lot of KG space if they're hi-res.
