Halo 6 is already being planned out, along with the next ten years of Halo

Halo 5: Guardians is just on the horizon but Microsoft and 343 Industries are already planning for the future. Not only is Halo 6 already in the planning stages, but so is the next ten years of the franchise. 343 Industries' own Frank O'Connor and Bonnie Ross have  discussed the future of the series.

“We do kind of know what’s going to happen in the next game pretty well at this point”, O'Connor said in an interview with GamesRadar. “We’re doing serious real planning and even some writing on the next game already, and that’s a luxury – we’ve never been in that position before. So we both know at a very high level what’s going to happen in, say, ten years from now. But at that very granular level knowing what’s going to happen in the next game and that’s just been a great feeling for me”.

According to Bonnie Ross in the same interview, the “fictional groundwork” for the next 20 years of Halo story content was being worked on way back in the ODST days: “You can look at the ending of Halo 4 – and where Master Chief is and obviously we had to know where we were going to take Halo 5 and Halo 6 with that. You have an epic sci-fi universe and we have multiple ways that we can go with this story, but all the pieces are laying there. The canvas is there for us to paint”

Obviously, while some events are planned out, 343 Industries isn't pinning all of its hopes on what it has right now, plenty of changes are called for throughout the development process that can't always be avoided: ” I think by the end of Halo 2 we knew we had a successful franchise and we knew that we had a story, but Halo 2 itself suffered so many pretty giant changes in the story and in the content as a result of production issues that all the plans for the story kind of got thrown out of the window in some way.”

KitGuru Says: It is clear that Microsoft isn't dropping Halo any time soon, particularly if the team is planning for events ten years down the line. Hopefully bringing the series back to the PC will fall in to their plans at some point…
