Android M is now Android Marshmallow

The final name for Google's next big version of Android has been revealed. Android M will now be known as Android Marshmallow, the company announced today, unveiling a statue of the Android mascot holding a marshmallow. The new version of Android is set to be an improvement over last year's Lollipop, which had a bit of a troubled launch on certain devices.

Among the operating system's many new features, we can expect to see ‘Now on Tap', which will make Google Now an even bigger part of Android. Additionally, users will be given control over app permissions and native support for the 64-bit ARMv8 architecture will be added in.

Google is also working on reducing background activity in order to save on power with Android Marshmallow, while also adding in native fingerprint sensor support, allowing for fingerprint verification on the lock screen and in apps before making purchases.

Android Marshmallow is already available to developers, though it will be launching the operating system later on in the year, alongside two new Nexus devices from LG and Huawei, the former of which we got a peek at earlier today.
