Via announces $49 Android PC for release this summer

When you think cheap computers you are probably reminded of the Raspberry Pi. However, the Raspberry Pi was originally designed as a tool to get kids into programming. Today VIA announced the first Android PC (APC) that will go on sale in June or July for just $49, targeted at just about anyone and everyone.

TweakTown got some hands-on time with the Neo-ITX board that has a 800 MHz ARM SoC (the VIA WonderMedia ARM 11 to be precise) and 512 MB of DDR3 memory. There will also be 2 GB of integrated flash storage plus a MicroSD slot on the rear I/O. The same I/O panel is also home to VGA output, HDMI output (limited to 720p), four USB 2.0 ports, 10/100 ethernet, audio out and microphone in ports.

Android 2.3 is present on the system and has been modified by Via to enabled keyboard and mouse support plus add a few pre-installed applications. Sadly, Android 2.3 is not quite Android 4.0 but we're hoping there will be an update for APC users sooner rather than later. Furthermore, it is not yet known whether it will be able to run standard Linux operating systems or not. The system has a low power draw, at load it will consume just 13.5 watts and just 4 watts at idle. A 15 watt power adapter will be included with the system.
