Cryo Mercia Laptop System Review

There is nothing worse than getting a high performance system home only to find that the manufacturer has decided to install 30 applications, 15 of which are trialware and ‘security packages' designed to make your new Core i5 processor behave like an ATOM.

We already knew Cryo wouldn't be that silly and we are glad to report only a handful of applications installed. Cryo consider you intelligent enough to work out which security package or antivirus client you wish to install yourself. The omission of McAfee and Norton anti virus packages earns bonus points.

An overview of the system as listed by the Windows 7 system overview tab. This is the first time we have looked at a Core i5 540M processor, it is a 35W TDP rated model which runs at 2.53ghz (3.066ghz turbo boost).

There are two cores and two threads, giving a total of four ‘processors' when listed via task manager. There is 3MB of smart cache onboard. Full listing of processor details can be seen over here.

GPUz shows that the mobile HD5800 discrete solution from AMD is based on the 40nm Broadway core. There are 16 ROP's, 800 shaders and 1GB of GDDR5 memory onboard, all tied into a 128 bit memory bus. The core clock runs at 700mhz and the memory at 1000mhz.

The overall system score of 5.9 is tied to the hard drive and memory performance, with the CPU rated at 6.8 and the graphics at 7.2. While this rating is not particularly useful as an indepth analysis tool it does give a brief overview that the system is a well rounded design, with no particular weaknesses.
