MSI GT780DXR 17.3″ Laptop review

The GT780DXR arrives in a very stylish box with an image of the product with a focus on the Steelseries keyboard. While the image on the box shows a backlit keyboard, we have been instructed that the UK version will not have this. This is slightly disappointing news for UK punters.

Our bundle includes a power supply, gaming mouse and literature on the product. MSI are working a deal with some retailers which means that customers can claim for a free copy of Battlefield 3 – until 20th January 2012.

The GT780DXR is a nicely finished, if slightly ‘chunky' laptop, with curved edges and a silver ‘MSI' logo engraved into the middle of the lid. Underneath are several vents to ensure adequate airflow.

The left side of the machine has three USB ports. The single port at the front is USB 2.0 and the two together at the rear are USB 3.0. They are rather closely spaced unfortunately which could cause some fitting issues with fatter USB drives. There is a card reader between these ports and at the very front are the audio connectors. The other side has two USB 2.0 ports and the bluray drive. MSI had plenty of room to space the USB ports further apart.

The rear of the GT780DXR has HDMI and VGA out support, and a hybrid eSATA/USB 3.0 port. Gigabit lan, a security lock and the power connector are placed to the left.

The battery is locked in place with two buttons on the underside of the laptop. One of them is a ‘lock' and the other a ‘release' button. First unlock the battery then push the release lever up. MSI are using a high power 7800 mAh, 87Wh battery which should offer decent longevity. We will test this later.
