Apple success story continues – iPhone 4 sells out

It seems the Apple juggernaut continues to steamroll everything in its path as latest reports in from Boy Genius and Engadget confirm that the iPhone 4 has sold out. Apple's market value has already surpassed Microsoft's, into hundreds of billions of dollars.

AT&T confirmed to Engadget that “as of Tuesday afternoon, customers who preorder the iPhone 4 moving forward will receive their device on June 25 or later, depending on when the order is placed.”

Sales were not made easy for customers however as AT&T's website had a plethora of issues which resulted in order problems and the exposure of private information. Many people were greeted with a “There was a problem with your request. We're sorry, but we are experiencing a system error that prevents us from completing your request.”

Apples hotline was so backlogged with complaints and problems and they were forced to start rejecting callers from their 1-800 number – this was met with the following message: “Thank you for calling Apple. Due to extremely high call volumes, we are unable to answer your call at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience. Please try your call again later. We appreciate your business and look forward to serving you in the future.”

Sales however continued with people who walked (wow, people still walk?) to their local stores. Well until they found out that AT&T stores had the same problems with the ordering system. Reports came in that staff in the stores were jotting down credit card numbers from customers just to reserve a position in another line at a later date. Holy smokes.

The major talking point however has been related to the AT&T website which had so many technical issues that it started displaying private information of customers during the pre-ordering process. Gizmodo reported that this bug was due to a ‘major fraud update that went wrong'. Blimey.

At the end of the day however, none of it matters as the iPhone 4 still sold out and the loyal fans will hopefully get their new gadget to play with shortly.
