Blackberry PlayBook OS 2.0 – is it enough?

Research In Motion have released their latest operating system, for the Playbook, simply entitled ‘2.0'.

The Playbook hasn't received a very warm reception since it was released, with many people feeling the operating system was never fully featured. This latest update is set to address many of the concerns by offering new built in email, calender and contacts and a selection of new applications.

Updates have been made to various software packages, such as the BlackBerry Bridge Application. The update for this program allows the user to configure a blackberry smartphone to operate as a wireless keyboard and mouse for the Playbook.

Research In Motion are still focusing on the Playbook as an integral part of their strategy, even though sales have been weak to this point. The company are planning to release a new range of smartphones powered by the QNX operating system (Blackberry 10).

Research In Motion are focusing on developers to persuade them to develop a wide range of applications. They will need a decent store infrastructure if they want to compete at all with Apple or Amazon. Research has shown that if a mobile device has strong online support then it is more likely to succeed.

Kitguru says: Can Research In Motion rescue the Playbook? The forecast looks bleak for the Canadian company, but we could be wrong.
