ROCCAT Pyra Wireless USB Gaming Mouse (& Sota Surface) Review

The Pyra has a very unique design which incorporates harsh lines, rather than the smoother curves we're used to seeing.  These lines disguise the ergonomics of the mouse from a glance. Its form is perfectly symmetrical so is suitable for both left and right-handed users.

ROCCAT have finished the mouse in matte black plastic which feels a little on the cheap side when compared to other mice, like the Thermaltake eSPORTS Black, which have a rubberised finish.  But there are rubber inserts in the thumb alcoves on each side of the mouse to enhance grip.

We were initially a little surprised not to find browser forward and backward buttons on the side of the mouse.  Instead, ROCCAT have developed a system called ‘EasyShift [+]' which gives all the mouse buttons a second function by pressing them in conjunction with the EasyShift [+] button.  This is located where we would usually expect to find the browser forward and back buttons.

So if you want to go forward and back in the browser, the EasyShift [+] button has to be pressed at the same time as ether the left or right mouse button.  This works well but certainly isn't as convenient as having the dedicated buttons.  As the mouse is ambidextrous in design, there is another EasyShift [+] button in the same place on the other side which is activated when you switch to right handed mode.

The left and right mouse buttons area little too easy to activate accidentally and have a very shallow travel which may not be preferable to some users.  In contrast, the mouse wheel requires a large amount of pressure to click which can be quite annoying if assigned to a macro function as it isn't quick to activate.  But, the wheel function is perfect, allowing us to flick single or multiple clicks without issue.  And, the shape of the mouse wheel means it is equally comfortable to use with left or right hands.

At around 90g, the Pyra may sound very lightweight but this doesn't take into account the weight of the batteries which makes it a little heavier.  But even with the batteries installed, the mouse is about average in terms of weight compared to other gaming mice.  The included charging cable that plugs into the front of the mouse is a little short for our liking but is more than long enough for use with a laptop.

It's quite clear that ROCCAT have designed the Pyra with portability in mind.  The mouse is very small so may not be comfortable for users with large hands.  The wireless dongle is also tiny, protruding only around 4mm out of your computer.  Additionally, the dongle can be stored in the bottom of the mouse when not in use.
