Bangarang! Hook actor is crowdfunding a Rufio prequel

Dante Basco, the actor who played Rufio in the 1991 adaptation of Peter Pan, Hook, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to film a short prequel film about the character. At the time of writing, it's reached $13,000 of its $30,000 goal, with several hundred backers already on board.

“This is the story about Rufio, before the mohawk, before Neverland, before he was The Pan,” the campaign page reads. It wants to tell the story of not just Rufio, but Roofus, the boy who would become the Lost Boy's leader during Pan's long absence when he grew up and became a lawyer. It will tell the story of Roofus' upbringing, where the call of Bangarang came from and why he has such an outstanding mohawk.

Basco is of course, a little old to be playing Rufio at this point, but he will be acting as executive producer for the project. He'll be joined by writer/director, Jonah Feingold, who is already set to develop a feature length Peter Pan film entitled Wendy, later this year. The production team will also involve a director of photography, a composer, production designer and a couple of extra producers for good measure.

The campaign currently sits at $13,000 and needs another $17,000 to be successful. With 25 days left to go, it seems likely to hit its target. If you want to help out though, you can pitch in $10 to get behind the scenes access to the film's production process, and up to $50 for a personalised letter and picture from Basco himself.

If you pitch in $1,000 or more you can be an associate producer on the film, or $10,000 if you want to be an executive producer.

The production team are still looking for actors for the film too, so if you know a 13-ish year-old who could play Roofus or one of his two friends, be sure to get in touch with the producers.

KitGuru Says: There's even talk with this that if they hit a stretch goal of $200,000, they'll turn Bangarang into a feature-length film. While that doesn't seem quite as likely to happen, you never know. Think happy thoughts.

KitGuru had a stonkingly successful CES 2024, however there is one small gap in our coverage that needs to be addressed. We gave plenty of coverage to Intel's new Core Ultra range of Meteor Lake laptop processors but appeared to give AMD the cold shoulder, and it is now time to fix that apparent oversight.
