Synology Diskstation DS213 Air NAS Review

We are testing the Synology Diskstation DS213 Air within our Gigabit network, and for these tests it was plugged in directly into our gigabit routers (although it can be used wirelessly).

The hard drives used are 2 x 1 TB Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM drives (pictured on Page 3) and we are using a Kingston HyperX 3k 120 GB SSD inside our computer.

We performed each test 5 times to improve the reliability of our results. For the read tests we were copying the folder/file from the Synology DS213 to our SSD, and for write speeds copying from our SSD to the Synology device.

In terms of the pure read/write performance we were impressed. Of course, these hard disk drives aren't super fast however a read average of over 75 MB/s is certainly quite good for this kind of device. Synology quote 100MB/s, but we couldn't quite reach that sustained speed.

In terms of write speed very few people will be disappointed, as you can transfer almost 3 GB per minute.

However, when we copied our mixed file folder over we did find the speeds plummeted which isn't a great surprise. Overall, the DS213 Air could back-up important files in a timely fashion.
