Just as expected, last night at WWDC, Apple finally put its AR/VR ambitions on show with the announcement of the Apple Vision Pro headset. We've been hearing about Apple building its own virtual reality headset for years, but the final product isn't as exciting as we'd hoped for.

The Apple Vision Pro is Apple's answer to the Meta Quest Pro and other pro-grade VR/AR headsets. Much like the Microsoft Hololens, it offers VR and AR visuals, self-contained computing capabilities and an astonishingly high price tag. The Hololens launched at $3,500 years ago and now history is repeating itself with the Apple Vision Pro, also priced at $3,500.

Like the HoloLens, the Apple Vision Pro is aimed at professionals and enterprises, rather than regular everyday users, although the marketing does blur those lines a bit. Rather than having a controller, everything will be handled through hand-tracked gestures, which could help regular use feel more natural.

The headset uses a new OS, which Apple has dubbed VisionOS, powered by a dual-chip system under the hood, but most of the use cases shown in the trailer are all things we've seen before with other VR/AR headsets. Artists and designers can use AR apps to visualise changes to a space, or create 3D art. When it is time to wind down, you can play a few Apple Arcade titles, or create a big virtual screen for watching movies and videos,

For battery life, you'll only get two hours of use without being plugged in and the battery is external, so the idea is you hook up the battery and then stick it in your pocket with the wire routed around your body. It isn't an ideal solution, but the positive side is it allowed Apple to keep the headset slimmer and lighter for more comfortable wearing. If there is one thing we know Apple is obsessed with, it is making devices smaller and lighter.

The Apple Vision Pro is being revealed this year, but it won't become available until ‘early next year', so it is going to be some time before we see full reviews that really dive into the capabilities of this headset.

KitGuru Says: The Apple Vision Pro has finally arrived but with its current price tag, I don't see it taking any market share away from the likes of the Meta Quest.

We've known through leaks that Apple has been working on its own VR/AR headset for quite some time now. Analysts have believed that we'll see Apple's first mixed-reality headset in 2023, but it is now being reported that Apple has some concerns about the current state of the VR market.

While at one point Apple CEO, Tim Cook, was extremely bullish on the future of mixed reality technology, the market has stagnated in recent years. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is no longer optimistic about the mixed reality market and is pushing back production of its first headset to Q3. It is also anticipated that Apple will only sell around 200,000 to 300,000 units, which is a dip below previous expectations.

Kuo believes Apple is concerned that a combination of economic downturn, compromised hardware specifications and a lack of polished ecosystem and high price tag will lead to low sales for its first headset.

Apple just recently confirmed its dates for WWDC and the invitation could tease fresnel lenses for a VR headset. Apple has put hints on event invitations before, although given this recent news, Apple may push back its unveiling to a later date.

KitGuru Says: Given that this headset has a rumoured price tag of $3000 or higher, we would expect sales to be quite low. Sony is already having a hard time having reportedly only sold 300,000 PSVR 2 headsets over the last six weeks and that is a much cheaper and consumer-marketed device. Apple might have a bit more market pull, but once you start reaching such high price points, you are really marketing to professionals and developers rather than consumers and hobbyists.

Apple has been working on VR and AR technology behind the scenes for years at this point. Patent filings and various leaks have already helped paint a picture of a more productivity-focused device. However, Apple will be investing a little into the gaming side, as it has reportedly begun hiring game developers.

As reported by mobilegamer.biz, Apple recently hired two of the founders behind mobile studio Playdeo. This studio primarily focused on narrative-driven AR apps like Mystery Coast and Avo.

According to the report, Apple has hired Playdeo staff previously too, including the design lead behind Avo. Apparently, Apple is also in talks with AR game studios as well as it begins preparing content for its first AR consumer device.

Previous leaks and rumours have pointed to Apple releasing its first dedicated AR/VR device in 2023.

It is no secret that Apple is working on Mixed Reality hardware, with plans for multiple devices over the next five years, including AR glasses, and a full headset. Now, according to new trademark filings, we know that these devices will run a new Apple OS – RealityOS.

As reported by Bloomberg and Parker Ortolani, Apple has begun filing trademarks for something called ‘RealityOS', which is described as a “reality operating system”. Now years later, references to RealityOS have been discovered in recent Apple software updates, indicating that it is real.

With this trademark popping up, as well as references to the OS within Apple's code, we can assume that the company is close to announcing its first major AR or VR device. Previous leaks have pointed to a late 2022 launch for the first Apple headset, but those expectations have now shifted to 2023.

The first Apple headset has been described by sources as a ‘niche' device with ‘Mac level' computing power. The headset may also sport 4K OLED displays, and may pack a new M-series Apple processor. While we've heard plenty about the hardware side, we have not heard much about Apple's plans for content.

KitGuru Says: Apple's AR/VR headset plans have been openly discussed for years, but it seems that we're finally nearing an actual product launch. One of the more exciting projects to come out of Microsoft in recent years is the HoloLens, a bold push into Augmented Reality. Following the launch of the HoloLens 2 and Microsoft's deal with the US military, we've heard very little about the future of the headset. Recent reports claim that Microsoft internally cancelled a HoloLens 3 and could scrap the HoloLens project entirely,

According to Business Insider, Microsoft scrapped plans for a HoloLens 3 and has been in talks with Samsung to partner with them on building an AR headset instead. Meanwhile, Microsoft will continue ahead with its multi-billion dollar deal to provide custom HoloLens headsets to the US Army.

Hololens.jpg

Of course, such a report has not gone unnoticed by those within Microsoft. While the initial report was based on testimony from employees who have chosen to remain anonymous, Alex Kipman, a leader on the HoloLens project, has spoken out publicly.

In a reply to Twitter users asking about the HoloLens situation, Kipman said “don't believe what you read on the internet”, adding that “HoloLens is doing great”. However, there is still some cause for concern, as pointed out by The Wall Street Journal, more than 70 employees on the HoloLens team have left Microsoft in recent months, with a good chunk of them heading to Meta, likely to work on Zuckerburg's Metaverse vision.

KitGuru Says: Reading between the lines, I believe there is truth on both sides of this story. While the HoloLens might not be scrapped entirely, it seems clear that Microsoft is considering some major changes and recent employee exits may have set back development on next-gen AR tech.

As usual with Apple products, its upcoming Augmented Reality headset is one of the worst kept secrets in the industry. At this point, it is widely expected that Apple will launch its first AR device in 2022, and the latest reports back up that claim, while adding on an important detail – it should have ‘Mac level' compute power.

A new research note from Ming-Chi Kuo is doing the rounds this week. Previously Kuo has been fairly accurate when it comes to Apple's future plans and release timings. In Kuo's latest report (via MacRumors), he claims that Apple will launch its first AR headset Q4 2022, which lines up nicely with Apple's annual October event.

The headset itself will be powered by two processors, one of which will have “the same level of computing power as the M1”, Apple's new Arm-based SoC that powers Macs and iPad Pros. The secondary processor is a less powerful chip that handles the headset's sensors and input data. As far as optics go, the current claim is that the headset will have dual 4K OLED displays manufactured by Sony, which should be more than enough to eliminate the screen door effect.

It is worth noting that this is a significantly more powerful headset than we were expecting for Apple's first outing into AR hardware. Previous reports claimed that the first AR device would be entry-level and require a companion iPhone for processing, while a higher-end, standalone headset would still be a few years away.

If we are truly getting an Apple AR headset in 2022 though, then we should just be a few short months away from supply chain leaks, which will paint a more accurate picture as to what we're getting.

KitGuru Says: Tim Cook has essentially confirmed that AR is the next big frontier for Apple and soon, we'll see just what the company's plans are. Whether or not Apple will convince iPhone and iPad users to get on board remains to be seen though. Content is king, and nobody should be dropping a grand on a headset to use as a private Apple TV+ cinema when cheaper headsets can already deliver that same experience.

We've known for a long time now that Apple is working on its own virtual reality and augmented reality hardware. The first Apple headset is rumoured to be launching in the next year or two, boasting high-end features like eye-tracking technology, ultra high resolution displays and more. There may be one drawback though – the headset may need an accompanying iPhone or Mac to work.

According to sources speaking with The Information, Apple's upcoming VR/AR headset will require an iPhone or Mac to unlock ‘full functionality'. The headset itself will feature its own 5nm processor, but the chip is said to not be as powerful as the ones made for iPhone, lacking certain features like AI acceleration.

The report goes a step further to suggest that mass production of the processor for this headset will begin in 2022, leading up to an announcement and launch later in the year.

Apple itself has not announced anything officially at this time, although it is no secret that this technology is being worked on, simply based on patent filings, company acquisitions and direct quotes from CEO, Tim Cook.

It has been over five years since Microsoft first announced the HoloLens and while the AR headset has had its updates and upgrades, it is still primarily reserved for developers, engineers and the US military. There has been very little discussion around whether or not the HoloLens will eventually become a consumer product, but as it turns out, consumer-grade AR hardware is still a priority for Microsoft.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft's Alex Kipman, a leader on the HoloLens project, explained that bringing the headset to consumers is still a big part of Microsoft's plan, but getting there is a long journey.

hololens.jpg

“We are absolutely working on a consumer journey for HoloLens. I’m happy to confirm that and say that is a very important part of our strategy”, Kipman said. “You don’t get to lead a new medium of computing if you’re not going to be in consumer”.

Unfortunately, there is no roadmap or timetable. Current rumours indicate that Apple is going to bring its own Augmented Reality device to the consumer market within the next couple of years. That increased competition may push Microsoft to make some consumer-oriented announcement in a similar time frame.

A few weeks ago, Niantic head, John Hanke, appeared at Microsoft Ignite to discuss the HoloLens, Augmented Reality and showcase a small Pokémon AR demo. As it turns out, Niantic has bigger plans beyond partnering with Microsoft, as Hanke is now teasing Niantic Augmented Reality glasses.

This week, Hanke took to Twitter to post a teaser image of Niantic's first piece of hardware, built to interact with games on Niantic's augmented reality platform:

Nothing has been shared on specifications, pricing, a launch window or anything else. However, we can ascertain a few details from the image itself. We can clearly see a lens for AR viewing, a speaker on the side and an adjustable strap, indicating that rather than resting on top of your ears like traditional glasses, these will wrap around your head to take the weight off.

Niantic has been working with augmented reality on smartphones for years now, starting with Ingress in 2012 and resulting in licensed projects like Pokémon GO and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite over the last five years.

It is no secret that Apple is working on an Augmented Reality headset. While the original source of some of these leaks may have been caught out at this point, there is still new information flowing from insiders. This time around, reports indicate that Apple's mixed reality headset will be the most lightweight headset on the market to date.

According to new research from Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo (via 9to5Mac), Apple's upcoming AR headset will be lighter than the iPhone, coming in at 150 grams thanks to ultra-short focal length lenses. This is much, much lighter than competing headsets on the market, including the HoloLens 2 (645g), the Valve Index (809g) and the Oculus Quest 2 (503g).

At this weight, Apple's wearable would also be lighter than the iPhone 12, which weighs 164g. Given just how light this headset would be, we'll take this particular rumour with a pinch of salt.

Other planned features for Apple's first AR/VR headset include high resolution (possibly 8K) displays, eye-tracking technology and lots of cameras for tracking. It is unknown if Kuo is referring to this headset with his weight estimate, as Apple does have multiple AR and VR devices in the works, including AR glasses, which would make more sense at this reported weight class.

KitGuru Says: It is going to be very interesting to see what angle Apple takes when it comes to marketing its AR and VR hardware. Microsoft's focus has been purely on developers, with some small gaming demos, while other companies focus almost entirely on the gaming segment.

Microsoft first revealed the Hololens all the way back in 2015, before shipping the first developer units in 2016. Since then, we've seen concepts for the Hololens running experiences based on Halo and Minecraft. Now, Pokémon is joining that list, with Niantic and Microsoft teaming up to show off a Hololens Pokémon Go demo.

As part of Microsoft's new ‘Mesh' platform reveal for mixed reality devices like the Hololens, Niantic released a Pokémon Go Hololens demo reveal. The demo is running on a Hololens 2 headset and shows how a user could walk around outside and spot virtual Pokémon in the wild and interact with them.

Speaking about the demo, Niantic CEO and founder, John Hanke, explains that this demo “is not intended for consumer use”, instead it is intended to offer “an early glimpse into the future evolutions in both software and hardware”. Hanke also added: “We’ve only scratched the surface. We know the years ahead to be filled with important achievements which will serve as waypoints in AR’s journey to become a life-changing computing platform.”

All of this took place during Microsoft Ignite 2021, a virtual event that took place last night. At that time, Microsoft also announced ‘Mesh', a collaborative AR platform backed by Azure servers.

Back in June 2019, Augmented Reality startup, Magic Leap, launched a lawsuit at a competing company, Nreal. The lawsuit alleged that Nreal had copied Magic Leap's technology and design but now, the case has been dismissed by a California judge.

Nreal was founded by Chi Xu, a former employee of Magic Leap. Xu was named in the lawsuit several times, with Magic Leap alleging that he primarily came to the company to dig through confidential research and development, all in order to take it back to China under his own company.

Now here we are a year later, with a California court dismissing the lawsuit. Previously, Nreal had called the allegations made “vague and unsubstantiated”, a sentiment that the court appears to agree with.

Magic Leap did not provide enough information on the alleged IP Theft or how it took place. It is worth noting that the case was not dismissed with prejudice though, so Magic Leap can regroup with its legal team and attempt to come back with a stronger case.

We've known for a long time now that Apple is deep into development of its own augmented reality wearable, tentatively known as Apple Glass. There has been mixed messaging on when we might see a standalone AR product come to fruition, but the latest report suggests that we could see one announced quite soon.

According to reputable Apple leaker, Jon Prosser, Apple planned to unveil its first-generation Augmented Reality glasses in September alongside the iPhone as a ‘one more thing' at the end of the presentation. However, COVID-19 and its impact on the ability to hold public gatherings means we may not see the announcement until early 2021.

According to Prosser, the plan is to link Apple Glass with an iPhone, similar to how the original Apple Watch needed to be paired with one in order to work. Early prototypes of the device featured wireless charging capabilities as well as a LiDAR sensor.

These glasses would start at $499, although they are still some ways off being ready for market. Apparently a late 2021 or early 2022 release date is targeted at the moment.

KitGuru Says: There has been plenty of time for AR technology to mature since the days of Google Glass, so it will be interesting to see what Apple is able to do in the next year or so. What do you think of the latest Apple AR leaks?

Octi has launched the world’s first social network that uses augmented reality to connect people in real life. The Octi social network is built on cutting edge technology that has been tested by thousands of students across Southern California.

Already launched on Apple’s iOS platform, Octi claims its new social network provides the most exciting vision of its augmented reality platform future to date. With the Octi social network app, you can point your phones camera at a friend and see their profile floating around on the screen. The on-screen profile can display their favourite YouTube videos, Spotify songs and personal photos, as well as an overlay featuring fun effects and stickers.

“We've spent years rethinking the entire framework of social media to build an app that's both rooted in personal, human interaction and fulfils the promise of AR technology,” said Justin Fuisz, the CEO and Founder of Octi. “We had a blast building Octi and we're excited to debut it to the world today.”

To accomplish this achievement, Octi raised a total of $12 million from leading investors of consumer technology brands such as Live Nation, Anheuser-Busch InBev, Peter Diamandis' Bold Capital Partners, Human Ventures, I2BF, Tom Conrad, Rich Greenfield, Scott Belsky, and Josh Kushner.

“Octi is a unique mobile app that actually encourages its users to interact with each other in real life, in an era where technology has made it far too easy to avoid in-person relationships,” said Rich Greenfield, partner at LightShed Partners and noted social media analyst.

The Octi augmented reality social network app is available to download from the Apple iOS store now. An Android version is expected to be available later in 2020.

We have more updates on Apple's upcoming push into the Augmented Reality market. Recent weeks have seen rumours point towards a first-gen AR device in 2020 and an unlikely partnership with Valve. Now, the latest report detailing Apple's plans has put more realistic expectations in place, with an Augmented Reality headset in 2022, followed by AR glasses in 2023.

The latest report comes from The Information, claiming to have details from sources that have seen Apple's internal presentations regarding augmented reality products. The first AR-focused device from Apple will be a headset codenamed ‘N301', which apparently resembles a slimmer version of an Oculus Quest. This device will supposedly have AR and VR capabilities, so it'll look like a VR headset and function like one with an internal screen but have front facing cameras for Augmented Reality functionality. If this report is accurate, then Valve will begin reaching out to developers for third-party software development from 2021, casting a bit more doubt on previous rumours around a Valve partnership.

After the full headset is released, Apple will also push a smaller, AR-only pair of glasses, which will be designed to be worn and used for longer periods of time. Current prototypes apparently look like high-end sunglasses with thick frames, which makes sense given the hardware and batteries that need to be housed internally.

One source claims that Apple is also looking into lenses that darken when in use to signal that the wearer is occupied in augmented reality. With these glasses, Apple will be looking to create a similar impact to the iPhone in 2007. Tim Cook in particular sees AR as being the next forefront and a potential replacement for modern smartphones.

KitGuru Says: The rumours around Apple's augmented reality plans have been getting a bit out of hand recently. This recent report and timeline seems like the most realistic approach for Apple. If we were a year away from a product launch, we'd likely already have images or renders of the device being manufactured, as is the case with the iPhone every year.

Microsoft announced the HoloLens 2 augmented reality headset all the way back in February, with pricing and pre-order details arriving in May this year. Now after plenty of waiting, the HoloLens 2 is officially shipping, with an upgraded field of view and more powerful internal hardware.

Under the hood, the HoloLens 2 packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 processor, as well as a custom second-generation holographic processing unit (HPU) designed by Microsoft. The new headset also comes with a new 8MP front-facing camera for 1080p/30Hz recording, WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0 and tracking for your eyes, hands and 6 degrees of freedom head movement. Battery life is still on the low side though, with the 2K 3:2 per eye light engines limiting portable use to three hours on a single charge.

While the HoloLens is an exciting device, it is far from being a consumer-oriented one. The original headset ended up being marketed exclusively towards developers with a $3,000 price tag. With the HoloLens 2, Microsoft's ‘Developer Edition' will be sold to developers and enterprise partners at $3,500 per unit, putting it in the realm of ‘business tool' rather than ‘fun new toy'.

With the HoloLens 2 now out, all eyes will be turning towards what's next, especially as Apple continues to ready up its own augmented reality headset in a rumoured partnership with Valve.

KitGuru Says: The HoloLens is one of Microsoft's most interesting on-going projects but current augmented reality technology is far from matching our sci-fi fuelled dreams for the future. Still, steady progress is being made and hopefully by this time next year, we'll be hearing about the next big development, whether its a HoloLens 3 or a competing AR headset.

We have known for some time now that Apple has big plans for Augmented Reality technology. A good chunk of Apple’s engineers are working on various projects and we have seen Apple buying up AR specialist companies to help pave the way for a wearable. We've seen a few patents hinting at what's to come and with rumours of a major 2020 AR push on the horizon, a new rumour suggests that an unlikely alliance has formed between Apple and Valve for development on augmented reality tech.

Up to this point, Valve has dabbled in Augmented Reality but shifted all of its focus towards Virtual Reality a few years ago, leading to a number of Valve employees being let go. According to DigiTimes, Valve might be dipping its toes back in to AR, with the site claiming that Apple has “partnered” with the studio to “develop AR head-mounted display devices, which may be released in the second half of 2020 at the earliest”.

DigiTimes has been known to have supply chain sources, which has led to several Apple leaks in the past, most of which have focused on the iPhone. This time around, the report says that Taiwan component suppliers, Quanta Computer and Pegatron, are handling assembly on prototypes currently being made. Although the report also claims that Apple is in the process of moving production of prototypes to the US.

This isn't the first time that sources have claimed that Apple is collaborating with third-party companies on its augmented reality ambitions. As reported by macrumours, Apple-focused analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo has previously said exactly that, while also indicating that Apple could begin producing its first head-mounted AR device as early as Q4 2019 in preparation for a 2020 launch. Of course, this conflicts with other reports, which indicate that while Apple is hoping to come out with an AR device next year, there are still question marks and delays be granted to allow more time for technology to mature.

This would also be an odd partnership for Valve to enter in to. In the early days of Oculus, Valve was heavily involved until Facebook swooped in with its acquisition. Valve has also been highly critical of Microsoft for ‘walled garden' approaches to Windows in the past, an issue that would presumably also impact proper partnership with Apple.

So far, neither Apple or Valve have commented on this rumour. What is being reported as a development partnership could also simply be Apple temporarily renting part of Valve's US-based production facility, where prototype VR headsets, the Valve Index and the Steam Controller are made. We'll have to wait and see if any more sources pop out with any more details over the next few months.

Discuss on our Facebook page HERE.

KitGuru Says: Valve just released the Index and is soon going to be releasing its own flagship VR title, so it seems like an odd time to be diverting attention to augmented reality. This is certainly one of the wilder rumours to come out around Valve and Apple in recent years, so I would take this information with a big scoop of scepticism.

We have known for some time now that Apple has big plans for Augmented Reality technology. A good chunk of Apple's engineers are working on various projects and we have seen Apple buying up AR specialist companies to help pave the way for a wearable. Last month, a new Apple patent gave us a look at some of the tech behind Apple's AR glasses and now, reports indicate that we could see a launch in 2020.

According to Bloomberg, Apple has big plans for Augmented Reality in 2020, including new AR features for the iPhone and a pair of AR glasses. According to the report, these glasses will sync with an iPhone to display texts, emails and games over a user's field of vision. The current plan is to launch in 2020, but only if the technology is ready, as Apple will want to avoid falling into the same trap as Google Glass. With that in mind, delays past 2020 are entirely possible.

Apple is apparently working with game developers and graphics professionals in an effort to ensure a leading place in the market at launch. However, there will be plenty of competition in the Augmented Reality space in the years to come. Not only is Microsoft still forging ahead with the HoloLens, but Facebook is also working on AR wearables and Google is returning to Google Glass once again with a focus on business and enterprise applications.

We'll have to wait and see but expect a few AR-related features to leak in iOS code over the next year. When those leaks come through, we should have a good idea of what to expect from Apple's first-gen AR wearable.

KitGuru Says: Currently, these glasses are sounding a bit like an Apple Watch for your face but we'll have to wait and see. There is no doubt that AR is extremely exciting but it will take time to match up to expectations.

Apple and its CEO, Tim Cook, have been openly enamoured with augmented reality for a few years now. The company began dipping its toes into AR with the iPhone 8, which touted a new wave of augmented reality apps for iOS. However, the company’s big goal is to release dedicated Augmented Reality hardware and newly discovered patent filings give us some new details on what Apple is working on.

Apple has been acquiring start-up AR companies, including one that specialises in headsets and another that specialised in lenses. Apple also reportedly has around 1,000 engineers working on various AR projects, with the biggest being a rumoured AR headset- or potentially smart-glasses.

The new patent, which was filed in March, describes a ‘reflective holographic combiner’ embedded into lenses to display an image. The way it would work sounds like an augmented reality-infused projector.

There would be a light engine and foveal projectors that beam through the holographic combiner, displaying images in the real world for the user to see. High resolution images would be displayed where a user’s eyes are primarily focused, while lower resolution images are displayed on the periphery, which is a performance saving technique often used in VR applications.

Another detail focused on is a method for displaying an image that looks further away from the eye than it really is. This is in an effort to reduce eye strain and potential nausea- two issues that have been heavily focused on in the advent of consumer VR and AR technology.

KitGuru Says: We are likely still a few years away from Apple releasing dedicated Augmented Reality hardware, but the company seems to be making good progress. As always though, what we do eventually end up with is likely going to be quite different from what early patents describe.

For years now, Facebook has been making efforts to branch out beyond social networking. At one point in time, the company tried to topple the smartphone market with its own phone, which swiftly failed. Nowadays, Facebook owns Oculus and is enjoying success in the VR space and now the next step appears to be augmented reality hardware.

Apple, Microsoft, Google and other tech giants are also working on AR technology. Microsoft and Google in particular took two very different approaches, with the former creating a full AR headset and the latter opting to develop ‘Smart Glasses’. Facebook will be following Google’s approach, opting to create glasses with a built in display and the ability to do many of the same functions we normally use a smartphone for today.

Image: Google Glass Enterprise Edition. Used for illustration purposes only- Facebook's glasses likely won't look like this.

According to sources speaking with CNBC, Facebook’s AR glasses are being made in partnership with Ray-Ban and are codenamed ‘Orion’. The project apparently aims to ‘replace smartphones’ by creating a wearable AR device that can take calls, show relevant notifications to users, film point-of-view video and features its own digital assistant for voice commands.

Not all interaction will be delivered through the glasses though, Facebook is apparently considering a touch-sensitive ring that will act as a controller. For now, the project is still under wraps and in development with no guaranteed release. However, Zuckerburg apparently does want to start shipping these between 2023 and 2025.

KitGuru Says: Replacing smartphones with Augmented Reality glasses is an ambitious goal but it doesn’t seem like we’ll get to that point any time soon. In the meantime, Facebook is going to be trying to figure it out anyway, although there is also the chance that this project never makes it all the way to the consumer market.

Microsoft just announced the Hololens 2 yesterday but the headset's launch has been marred by controversy. Microsoft has accepted a $479 million contract to supply the HoloLens to the US military- something that Microsoft workers are now protesting. Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella has since defended the company's decision.

Microsoft won the military contract last year after facing competition from other augmented and virtual reality companies. The goal is to send up to 100,000 headsets to he military to help soldiers identify threats and increase chances of success on the battlefield. Microsoft employees have posted an open letter calling for the cancellation of the contract, with developers stating that they “did not sign up to develop weapons”.

Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, has since spoken with CNN about the contract, stating that accepting the deal was a “principled decision”. Nadella does not want to “withhold technology from institutions that we have elected in democracies to protect the freedoms we enjoy”.

He also added that Microsoft executives will continue to talk this over with employees and hear out their concerns. Still, Nadella sees this move as being part of the ‘responsibility Microsoft has as a corporate citizen', all in the name of supporting democracy.

KitGuru Says: This is certainly a touchy subject and I can see why Microsoft employees would not want to work on military hardware. From the sounds of it though, Microsoft still wants to follow through on this, despite employee concerns. That could change in the future, so we'll just have to wait and see.

We've known for quite some time that Apple is looking to break into the Augmented Reality market. The company reportedly has around 1,000 engineers working on AR projects, is working with TSMC to manufacture displays and has acquired its own headset maker. This week, Apple took another step towards its AR-driven future, with the acquisition of an Augmented Reality lens company.

Apple confirmed today that it has acquired Akonia Holographics, a startup based in Colorado focussing on lenses for augmented reality headsets/glasses. The company has been around since 2012 and its most recent technology allowed for “thin, transparent smart glass lenses that display vibrant, full-color, wide field-of-view images”. As VentureBeat reports, the company owns a portfolio of over 200 patents relating to holographic systems and materials.

Obviously, both Akonia and Apple are remaining tight-lipped so as not to give away the company's future plans. Still, given all of the other leaks and rumors floating around, this seems like another step towards Apple's plan to release an augmented reality headset of its own in the coming years.

Apple's first public foray into AR began last year with the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, both of which launched with AR features for new apps.

KitGuru Says: Apple has been working on augmented reality for quite some time. This acquisition is another hint at future plans, although it is worth noting that Apple does experiment in new product sectors quite regularly and not everything makes its way out. Apple's own full TV is a good example of that.

Over the last year, there has been plenty of growth in the VR and AR headset market, with more companies jumping on board. We know Apple is planning its own push, but Samsung wants to continue establishing itself in the market before Apple gets the chance. We've only just had the launch of the Samsung Odyssey, but the company already has a new VR/AR mixed reality headset in the works.

According to a report coming from The Korea Times, Samsung is currently working on “a powerful, cordless headset” with support for both augmented reality and virtual reality content. The headset will also use one of Samsung's OLED displays, which we have seen used in other headsets in the past.

Apple is rumoured to be working on its own wireless AR/VR headset, though that one won't be making an appearance for several years. Samsung's next headset on the other hand is tipped to appear at the IFA tradeshow in August.

Samsung and Apple aren't the only two getting into wireless headsets though. The Oculus Go launched just last week, there is a wireless HTC VIVE due out later this year and perhaps most importantly, Microsoft has been sitting on its HoloLens technology for the last few years.

KitGuru Says: Whenever Apple enters a new market segment, there is the chance that it will dominate. With that in mind, it makes sense for Samsung to begin sinking its teeth into wireless VR/AR now in order to get that head start. Still, even without Apple in the market yet, there is a ton of good competition floating around at the moment, with more likely to come in the future.

Mozilla has begun preparing itself for the future of web browsing this week with the announcement of Firefox Reality, a dedicated version of the browser for Virtual and Augmented reality headsets.

Currently, most people browse the web on a PC with a monitor, or on a mobile device. In the years to come as AR and VR headsets start to pick up steam, we may start to see a shift, particularly when higher resolutions start to become available. In order to prepare for that, Mozilla is announcing Firefox reality, which is “designed from the ground up to work on stand-alone virtual and augmented reality headsets”.

Just like the standard version of Firefox, this new version will continue to be open source and platform independent, meaning it will eventually work on a wide variety of headsets. Mozilla says that this version will also include the improvements recently introduced in Firefox Quantum, which aimed to boost browsing speeds.

At first, Firefox Reality will support the HTC Vive Focus, but it will eventually transition to the likes of Google Daydream, Samsung Gear VR, Qualcomm-based headsets and the Oculus Go. According to Mozilla, the future of the web will be “heavily intertwined with virtual and augmented reality”, so with this, Firefox should be prepared for that.

KitGuru Says: I've tried using an Oculus Rift for everyday PC usage and work before, but with current HMDs, the resolution just isn't high enough to make me consider replacing my monitor for that sort of thing. Still, it is good to see companies planning for the future, because eventually we'll have higher quality headsets to utilise.

It is well known at this point that Apple is experimenting with Augmented Reality technology, with hopes of releasing a head-mounted display at some point. Apple dipped its toes in the water last year with the introduction of AR features on the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, but there are bigger plans in place, as shown by a recently filed patent, describing a very different HMD compared to the Hololens, or various VR headsets we are used to.

Last week, Apple applied for a patent that sheds light on the company's intended plans for an Augmented Reality headset. As you might expect, one of the company's key goals is to reduce weight and size while increasing comfortability. As the patent says, current HMD solutions are “bulky and heavy” and can be “cumbersome or tiring to wear”. Apple intends to solve these problems with a new type of optical system.

Apple's Augmented Reality headset will use something called a ‘catadioptric system', which uses curved mirrors and lenses to combine refraction and reflection. By going this route, Apple may be able to avoid using magnifying lenses, which appear in most current VR headsets. This system could also reduce headset weight, making it less cumbersome to wear.

Previous rumours have pointed towards a 2020 launch for Apple's first Augmented Reality headset, with plans to announce it in 2019. However, the development process often has many twists and turns, so plans could change as time goes on. Either way though, this patent is a good indicator of what the company is currently aiming for.

KitGuru Says: Apple doesn't tend to rush products out of the door, so it could be a few years before we see their AR headset in action. Still, I'm sure we'll hear more about it before it finally comes to fruition, particularly since Apple is pretty bad at containing leaks these days.

There have been plenty of reports surrounding Apple's augmented reality plans over the last year. The most recent reports have indicated that Apple intends to have its own AR headset ready by 2020, now there seems to be a bit more evidence pointing towards that. This week, it has been revealed that Apple has acquired VR/AR headset maker, Vrvana for around $30 million.

Vrvana previously made the Totem VR headset, which was technically impressive but never made it to market. Now, two sources speaking with TechCrunch have said that Apple has acquired the headset maker in a deal worth $30 million. Neither company has publicly shared details on the deal at the time of writing.

The significant part of this deal, is that it ties in well with recent reports that Apple is ramping up production on its own augmented reality headset. A number of Vrvana's employees have reportedly relocated to working at Apple's campus. Currently, Vrvana's website is still live, but the company has ‘gone dark' on social media since August, indicating that the deal went through quite recently.

So what attracted Apple to Vrvana in particular? Well, the company's headset used a camera-based approach to augmented reality, differing from the likes of Microsoft's Hololens, which utilizes a projection-based display. By using cameras, Vrvana's headset is able to overlay fully opaque, true-color animations over a video feed of the real world. This allows for a “seamless blend” between virtual reality and augmented reality. This is something that Vrvana referred to as ‘extended reality'.

KitGuru Says: Apple has been keen on augmented reality for quite some time now. With big moves like this, the company definitely seems to be ramping up for something. Do you guys think Apple will release its own augmented reality headset in the future?

It has been quite some time since Microsoft first unveiled the HoloLens, but it seems that legal troubles are finally starting to follow. A company called HoloTouch has filed a lawsuit against Microsoft, claiming that the HoloLens headset infringes on two of its patents.

The lawsuit alleges that Microsoft's augmented reality headset infringes on two patents relating to holographic imaging. HoloTouch claims to have approached Microsoft as far back as 2006 to form a partnership but nothing ever came of it. Microsoft filed its own hologram patent in 2013, after which, HoloTouch says it reached out once again in 2015 and 2016 to try and strike a licensing deal.

Hololens.jpg

HoloTouch is now seeking a trial with a jury to try and shake some money out of Microsoft. The company is seeking damages, claiming that Microsoft “willfully” infringed on its patents and had prior knowledge of them before releasing the HoloLens.

KitGuru Says: These lawsuits pop up all the time for major tech firms, though it is surprising to see this happen now, so long after the HoloLens was first unveiled. This could be troubling for Microsoft, as patent holders have won cases like this in the past, though there will be plenty of opportunities for appeals to drag this out for years.

It is no secret that Apple is currently infatuated with augmented reality technology. Apple kicked off its support for it with the iPhone 8 and iPhone X earlier this year, bringing AR apps to iOS and experimenting with new camera features. Now, the company is looking to the future, with plans to ready an augmented reality headset by 2019.

According to sources speaking with Bloomberg this week, Apple is currently developing an augmented reality headset with its own in-built display. This means it won't need to rely on an accompanying smartphone to function. The development timeline is currently described as ‘aggressive' with plans to ship the product in 2020, while having it ready for 2019. Things could still change, but for now, that seems to be the timeframe Apple is working towards.

Apple first began experimenting with augmented reality a couple of years ago. The team has since grown to include a few hundred engineers scattered across both of Apple's offices in Cupertino and Sunnyvale, California.

The launch of ARKit on iOS was just the beginning. The next step seems to be a full headset that can stream 3D video without draining the battery. As expected, Apple will be using its own SoC design to power the headset, rather than relying on a third-party to make a chip that meets its requirements/expectations.

Apple hasn't finalised how users will control or interact with the headset just yet, but the company is said to be experimenting with Siri voice commands, head gestures and touch panels. In the build-up to this headset's launch, Apple will be improving the ARKit to make it easier for developers to create content. The first set of new software tools will arrive sometime in 2018.

KitGuru Says: Given all of Tim Cook's gushing about Augmented Reality over the last year, this news isn't too surprising. If Apple manages to stick to its 2019 date, then we may start seeing leaks and new information throughout 2018. Are any of you particularly excited about augmented reality? I feel like it could be quite good for productivity, though a lot of that will depend on things like resolution and field of view.

There was a lot to unpack following Apple's iPhone launch event last night. We've already had a chance to cover the iPhone 8 and iPhone X announcements and the Apple TV 4K. However, one thing we didn't touch on was the first Augmented Reality video game built for iOS 11. The Machines is an Augmented Reality RTS built for the next wave of iPhones and so far, it looks pretty cool.

The Machines is played using the iPhone's new AR camera functionality. It allows you to point at a surface and see virtual terrain displayed on the screen. You can then walk around and view the entire map from any angle you choose, which is particularly advantageous for an RTS, where timing and planning is key. You can see the game in action via the video below:

The game uses spatial audio, so the volume will change based on how close or far away from the action you are. Sound will also muffle if your position is obstructed by part of the map, like a mountain. Under the hood, this game is running using Metal 2, which is Apple's way of giving developers more direct access to the GPU, lowering API overhead and allowing for squeeze as much performance out as possible.

The Machines is developed by Directive Games based in Shanghai. As CEO, Atil Mar, explains in the video, the AR map itself consists of 1.2 milion polygons and 4K textures are also being used, so the game should look super sharp. Right now, we are unsure how compatible this game will be with older iPhones. However, if you are upgrading to the iPhone 8 or iPhone X then it should be very smooth as both new devices come equipped with Apple's first in-house developed GPU, following the company's split from Imagination earlier this year.

The Machines comes bundled for free in the iOS 11 update, which starts rolling out on the 19th of September.

KitGuru Says: While I do think this game looks cool, I can't help but feel it would be better played within a headset, rather than using your hands to point the phone camera around the map. Perhaps Apple will explore its own headset later down the line once it has had more time to play around with Augmented Reality.
