With a 4in woofer and 19mm silk tweeter, this speaker offers Alexa and Apple AirPlay 2 support, and if you buy two units you can pair them up in stereo mode. This stylish product certainly looks the part, but how does it perform and is it worth buying over other market leaders like Bose and Sonos?

Pros:

  • Stunning wood + fabric design.
  • Build quality feels premium.
  • Responsive touch controls.
  • Stereo support.
  • Alexa, Airplay, Spotify, TIDAL support.
  • Great bass.
  • Good loudness without compromising on quality.
  • No microphone for improved privacy.

Cons:

  • No microphone for Alexa control.
  • Bass can be a bit much.
  • Wood + fabric design could be considered outdated .
  • For those avoiding animal products the tweeters use silk + wool.

KitGuru says: In general, this speaker performs brilliantly, the added support for stereo setups definitely makes it a viable option as a speaker set-up for Apple products that can fully utilise the Wi-Fi support with AirPlay 2. For Windows and Android users support is less flexible but Spotify and Alexa support is still a totally viable way to use this product. It's stylish, and it sounds great. I think it's worth buying.

Bose may be well known for its products in the Hi-Fi and headphone space, but the company is trying its hand at a quality of life device this time around with the ‘Sleepbuds'. Following on from a successful Indigogo campaign, the Bose Sleepbuds are launching today, aimed at helping people block sleep-disturbing sounds for a better night of rest.

Bose initially raised over $400,000 for its Sleepbuds campaign after only looking for $50,000. Now that backers have received their Sleepbuds, the earphones will be making their way to the regular retailers such as Amazon and Best Buy.

Sleepbuds might look like regular in-ear headphones, but they offer something quite different. In order to help users get a better night of sleep, these earphones play back carefully engineered soundtracks designed to passively block sleep-disturbing sounds. There is no noise cancellation though, so things like speech and sudden loud noises will still come through.

The Sleepbuds are designed to fit in your ear without protruding so that you can easily sleep in any position and not feel uncomfortable. They only weight 1.4 grams, so there should be no discomfort when wearing them for longs periods of time.

The Sleepbuds do not play music from external devices, so you’ll still need another pair to get you through the day. With that said, these are far from being cheap, setting back buyers by $250 through retail.

KitGuru Says: $250 is very pricey but people are willing to splash the cash when it comes to a good night’s sleep. What do you make of the Sleepbuds?

It looks like Bose has found itself in some legal trouble following accusations that the company used an app to track and collect information on customers without permission. Using an app, Bose is said to have tracked the listening habits of its wireless headphone customers and then sold that data on to third-parties for profit. The case bares resemblance to an FTC case against TV maker Vizio recently, which found the company sold customer data without permission as well.

The complaint was filed by Kyle Zak this week at a Chicago federal court and may eventually escalate the lawsuit to class-action status. According to the complaint, the companion Bose Connect app violates the US Wiretap Act by “secretly collecting, transmitting and disclosing its customers” listening habits to third party companies.

Speaking with Reuters about the case, lawyer Christopher Dore said that “people should be uncomfortable” with this. He also added: “People put headphones on their head because they think it's private, but they can be giving out information they don't want to share.”

Zak claims that he had purchased a pair of Bose QuietComfort 35 headphones for around $350 and went on to download the companion app on his phone. He later learned that “all available media information” had been sent from his smartphone to third parties, including a company known as ‘Segment.io', which seems to proudly come up with ways for companies to farm customer data and spread it around.

Right now, the lawsuit aims to get several million dollars out of Bose for the privacy invasion. However, if class-action status is reached, this will be spread out among buyers of all different Bose wireless headphones.

KitGuru Says: Given that the FTC just took aim at Vizio for similar data collection habits, I'd be surprised if Bose gets out of this unscathed. How do you guys feel about companies collecting and selling your data? Do you see it as an invasion of privacy at all?

Apple’s Beats Electronics and Bose Corp. on Friday settled their patent dispute over noise-cancelling technologies. Bose will no longer demand the U.S. ITC to prevent Beats’ noise-cancellation headphones from being imported into the United States from China.

Bose and Beats in joint filings told a U.S. court in Delaware they have settled their claims, and asked the U.S. International Trade Commission to terminate its investigation, reports Bloomberg news-agency.

Back in late July Bose accused Beats Electronics of patent infringements. The high-end audio company said that Beats had willfully infringed upon five of its patents that relate to the company’s “active noise reduction” technology, which was first used in Bose products for the military in the 1980s and released for consumers in 2000.

Terms and conditions of the settlement were not disclosed.

Earlier on Friday a rumour emerged that Apple planned to stop selling Bose products in its stores. It is unclear how the settlement can affect Apple’s rumoured decision if there is one. Apple is naturally interested to sell only Beats audio products in its stores.

KitGuru Says: Patents infringements happen all the time in the high-tech world, they are hardly a big deal nowadays. This time Apple decided to settle a legal fight out-of-court. But at what conditions?

Separately, Bose filed a complaint with the U.S. ITC demanding to prevent Beats’ noise-cancellation headphones from being imported into the United States from China.

“We are committed to protecting our investment, protecting our customers, and defending the patents we own,” a Bose representative said in a statement.

It is unclear whether Bose had contacted Beats regarding the patent infringements and whether the companies even attempted to settle out-of-court.

Recently Apple agreed to buy Beats for $3 billion. Once the deal is closed, the Bose lawsuit will be another legal battle that Apple will have to fight. At present Apple is battling Samsung Electronics in various courts.

Apple and Beats did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: It is unclear whether Bose sued Beats because the latter is in process of becoming a part of Apple, or because the maker of fashion headphones was reluctant to license Bose’s intellectual property for far too long. In any case, a legal action against Apple as well as eventual settlement may bring a lot of advantages (both in terms of publicity and benefits) to Bose.
