In recent months, we had heard rumours that Meta was now working on a Twitter competitor, which would be tied to Instagram in some form. This week, Zuckerberg's latest social media platform, Threads, officially launched – it is indeed very similar to Twitter, so Elon Musk is suing.

Threads officially became available to the world this week and tens of millions of users flocked right to the new platform. Early reports around day-one sign-ups are still coming in but right now, the consensus is that roughly 50 million users signed up for Threads on its first day. Currently, Threads is only available as a mobile app, although public accounts can be browsed from the web.

The launch of Threads has irked Elon Musk, who promptly filed a lawsuit against Meta alleging the theft of trade secrets and misappropriation of intellectual property. The lawsuit alleges that Meta hired former Twitter staff and used their knowledge to fast-track a Twitter clone to market. On Threads, Meta Comms lead, Andy Stone, addressed this, saying that nobody on the Threads engineering team is a former Twitter employee.

With all of that said, Zuckerberg hasn't been shy about Threads and its position as a direct competitor to Twitter. On the day of the app's launch, Zuckerberg took to Twitter to post the following:

As you might anticipate from a Zuckerberg-led social media platform, there are already some concerns about the amount of data Threads requests from your iOS and Android devices.

Whether or not Threads can maintain its momentum remains to be seen. While we may disagree with some of the chances Musk has introduced to Twitter, the app is still currently more feature-rich compared to Threads, but that is an issue that can be solved with time. We'll also have to wait and see what happens with Musk's lawsuit against Twitter.

A few months ago, we learned that Meta was planning a Quest 3 headset, with plans to launch later this year. At the time, we assumed the reveal would happen in September, followed by a release in October. However, Meta has shaken up the timeline, unveiling the Quest 3 today.

The Quest 3 has a 40 percent slimmer optics profile compared to its predecessor and as you can see in the video below, the headset itself has undergone a radical redesign, as have the touch controllers. The new Touch controllers remove the hoop at the top, designed to strap to your hand and offer better finger tracking compared to the old design.

The Quest 3 is Meta's most powerful VR headset to date, packing a new-gen Snapdragon chip that delivers twice the GPU performance of the previous generation.

The Meta Quest 3 headset doesn't have an exact launch date yet, but it is coming ‘this Autumn', which likely means a late September to early October launch timeframe. The headset will be £499 at launch, just like the original Oculus Rift. Meanwhile, the Quest 2 will continue to be sold, with Meta reversing the $100 price bump it introduced last year, bringing the headset back down to its old price of $299 for the 128GB version.

KitGuru Says: The one key thing that wasn't mentioned in today's announcement was games. The blog post mentions pre-existing games and apps, but we've yet to see any killer launch titles for the new headset. Hopefully that will change over the summer as game announcement season heats up.

Following on from yesterday's Meta Quest 3 leaks, we have some more official news. Just months after launch, the Quest Pro headset is getting a significant price cut and beyond that, the Quest 2 is also getting a price cut just months after having its price raised.

Today, Meta announced that the Quest Pro headset will be dropping in price from $1,499 to $999. Additionally, the 256GB version of the Quest 2 headset is dropping down from $499 to $429.

Why would Meta be dropping prices all of a sudden? Well it could partially be to clear stock as the company prepares for a new generation of VR headsets. Earlier this week, employees at Meta's Reality Labs leaked an internal presentation, including a roadmap that shows the Quest 3 as launching this year.

The Quest 3 will apparently offer twice as much performance as the Quest 2, while also being thinner, lighter and slightly more expensive. Meta is also said to be working on roughly 41 new games and apps to support the launch.

KitGuru Says: The Quest 2 price cut will come into effect on the 5th of March in many countries, including the US, UK, Australia, France, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and more. If you're planning on picking up the 256GB version, it might be best to wait for the price drop to kick in.

The Meta (then-Oculus) Quest was released all the way back in 2019 and in many ways served as one of the leading forces behind this modern re-interest in VR technology. It being a first-gen product, the Quest 1 is starting to show its age, and so Meta has announced that it is ending support for the headset.

Making the announcement via an email to users (shared by ResetEra user ‘shodgson8’), Meta informed Quest 1 owners that they will no longer receive any major updates and will even lose some (albeit small) features, saying:

“We launched Quest 1 over four years ago and we are grateful to the Quest 1 community for pushing VR forwards. As we look to the future, we remain committed to supporting the community of Quest 1 users and will continue to support the headset with a few changes” – these changes being as follows:

  • “You will still be able to use your Quest 1 headset and available apps
  • We won't be delivering new features to Quest 1
  • We plan to continue maintaining the system software with critical bug fixes and security patches until 2024
  • Quest 1 users will no longer be able to create or join a party
  • Quest 1 users who currently have access to Meta Horizon Home social features will lose access to these features on 5 March 2023.
  • You won't be able to invite others to your Home or visit someone else's Home”

Considering the fact that Meta can’t even pay employees to use its Horizon services, its removal is no major loss. Still, while it is good to see the headset receiving two more years of security updates, it is always a shame to see a first-gen product fall to the wayside support-wise. Hopefully Quest 1 users are happy with where the headset is at.

John Carmack has been keenly involved in the VR space for a decade at this point, having joined Oculus before its sale to Facebook, and remaining on as CTO as the company transitioned to Meta. Carmack has been outspoken in his criticisms of the company previously and now, he is officially stepping down.

Carmack announced this internally with a memo that swiftly leaked to the press. Carmack later posted the memo himself in a public announcement of his resignation from Meta. Ultimately, it sounds like Carmack got sick of internal politics and lack of efficiency within Meta's VR team.

“This is the end of my decade in VR. I have mixed feelings,”, Carmack said. He explains that while Quest 2 is “almost exactly what I wanted to see from the beginning”, there is a big issue with efficiency at Meta Reality Labs.

“We have a ridiculous amount of people and resources, but we constantly self-sabotage and squander effort. There is no way to sugar coat this; I think our organization is operating at half the effectiveness that would make me happy.”

Carmack goes on to explain that while he has tried to use his voice at the highest levels of the company to push things in a better direction, he was unable to “set a direction and have a team actually stick to it”. The memo ends on a slightly more positive note though, saying that “no company is better positioned” to bring the “value of VR” to the masses than Meta.

Moving forward, Carmack will be running a new startup company and from the sounds of it, it won't be VR-related.

KitGuru Says: Considering all the money Zuckerburg has been quite publicly injecting into VR and AR projects, we haven't seen that much progress publicly.  The Quest 2 remains as a solid choice for those looking to play VR games, but it still feels like the company could be doing more, particularly on the game development front.

For years, Facebook has been working to compete in the livestreaming space, and even acquired Mixer's assets after Microsoft shut the service down a few years ago. While streaming on Facebook will continue, the dedicated Facebook Gaming app will be shutting down soon.

Meta announced this week that it plans to shut down the Facebook Gaming app for iOS and Android on the 28th of October. After that date, the app will no longer be functional.

Since launch, Facebook Gaming has been the main app for watching livestreams, some of which come from some very big streamers like Gothalion, who signed an exclusive deal with Mixer months before the service shut down. After Mixer's closure, all partners were offered a new deal with Facebook Gaming, or alternatively, they could get out of their deal early and go to a rival site like Twitch or YouTube. Some, like Ninja, chose to return to Twitch, while others moved over to a new deal with Facebook.

Facebook livestreaming will still exist within the main Facebook app and website, but with the Facebook Gaming app shutting down, we do wonder if we'll see anymore big streamer signings for the service, or if Facebook will focus on retaining the streamers it already has, and attracting newcomers to the space to help build the userbase.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Microsoft couldn't get the job done with Mixer, and Facebook doesn't exactly have much pull with the core gaming audience, which made it highly unlikely that Facebook Gaming would succeed where Mixer failed.

Back in May, Meta CTO, Andrew Bosworth, gave us a much needed update on the situation, saying that the team was still working on the new account system for VR. Now, Meta has released the patch notes for the latest Quest OS update, which will remove Facebook log-in requirements and replace them with a ‘Meta Account' log-in.

Meta log-ins will be rolling out this month for VR users. You'll no longer need Facebook to log in to one of Meta's VR headsets, like the Quest and Quest 2. Instead, you'll want a Meta account, which you can set up independently of a Facebook account.

This change also means Oculus profiles are changing once again to Meta profiles. New Meta profiles will have more customisation options, will have the option to link with other Meta services like Facebook and Instagram, and your ‘friends list' will now become your ‘follower' list.

KitGuru Says: Given that many have moved away from Facebook in recent years, forcing that to be a requirement for new Quest VR users always seemed like a bad move. A Meta account might not be much different in the grand scheme of things, as Facebook also falls under the Meta umbrella, but at least you don't have to keep an active Facebook account anymore.

Roughly one year ago, Oculus execs made it known that there would be no Quest Pro or Quest 3 headset anytime soon, with the company poised to continue supporting and pushing its best-selling Quest 2 headset for the foreseeable future. Now one year on, things may have changed, with reports indicating we'll see a Quest Pro later this year with beefed up specifications.

Back in April, tech industry analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, predicted that we would see a new high-end Quest headset this year. Now, Kuo has updated his report, claiming that the new Quest 2 Pro is still on the way and revealing some core specifications.

Kuo reiterates that the headset should use Mini LED displays, as well as a new dual-element lens design to help improve visual quality further. The headset should also have AR and VR video see-through support, and include as many as 16 built-in cameras for tracking. These cameras will be split between the headset and the controllers, with ten sensors on the headset and three per touch controller.

It is also claimed that the headset will be powered by the Qualcomm XR2 chip, which is the same chip found inside the Quest 2. With that in mind, it seems Meta is focused on adding additional features to this headset, rather than increasing compute power.

Assuming this is all legitimate, we should hear something official from Meta soon, likely around September or October.

KitGuru Says: Apparently, this Quest Pro headset will end up costing somewhere in the region of $799, which makes sense for something geared at enterprise. For the gaming market, the majority of people are going to be far better off sticking with the Quest 2, or perhaps waiting for a Quest 3, which we should hear more about next year.

Back in 2020, upon launching the Quest 2 headset, Meta made it a requirement that Facebook accounts be used to log in to the headset, a policy that caused a lot of issues and controversy at the time. Just one year later, the company changed its mind and began working on a new Facebook-less login system. It has been a while since the last update, but the change is still in the works.

During a recent AMA, and spotted by UploadVR, Meta's CTO, Andrew Bosworth, responded to questions about removing the Facebook account requirement for the Quest 2, saying that the feature is “still in the works”. However, the company is taking extra time to ensure it isn't breaking any data privacy regulations in the process.

Meta never really explained why it went all-in on Facebook for Quest and then reverted just a year later, but now even more work needs to be done to decouple the two platforms once again, which just feels like an exercise in burning money.

Meta's mixed reality division is also working on new VR headsets. A recent roadmap leak indicated that we'll be getting a Quest 3 next year, and a new entry-level VR headset in 2024.

KitGuru Says: Hopefully this change can be implemented before the end of this year, and well ahead of the Quest 3 launch. Did any of you avoid the Quest 2 due to its Facebook account requirements? Will you consider returning once a Facebook account is no longer needed?

The Oculus/Meta Quest 2 is by far the most popular VR headset currently, with 80% of all  sales in 2021 going to the standalone headset. All those who did buy a headset can look forward to an upcoming VR games showcase, set to go live later this month.

Making the announcement on their blog, the Oculus team said “Mark your calendars, because the Meta Quest Gaming Showcase (formerly known as the Oculus Gaming Showcase) returns to Facebook, YouTube, Twitch, and Horizon Venues at 10:00 am PT [6:00 pm BST] on April 20.”

Being the second annual games showcase from the platform holder, fans can expect “new game announcements, gameplay first-looks, updates on games coming in the next year, and a whole lot of surprises.”

Last year’s event featured many exciting announcements for Quest users, including the announcement of the Resident Evil 4 VR remake, Star Wars: Tales From the Galaxy’s Edge Part II, I Expect You to Die 2 and more.

The first Meta Quest Gaming showcase was an exciting affair offering many truly major announcements. Hopefully this year’s showcase is equally if not more exciting.

Since the launch of the very first Oculus devices, we have seen the virtual reality platform change and evolve drastically – for better and for worse. One of these changes was observed following the release of the Oculus Quest 2 which pushed the medium into adopting standalone headsets. Now, the Meta Quest 2 is dominating the market, with 80% of all VR sales going to Facebook/Meta.

According to research firm IDC, the Oculus/Meta Quest 2 had managed to capture 78% of all AR/VR headset sales in 2021. While perhaps not the biggest surprise considering the lack of competition right now, having such a large market and mind share gives Meta the power to control the future trajectory of VR as a whole.

Of course, with Sony inching closer to releasing the highly exciting PSVR2, and Apple currently working on a premium VR headset, 2022/23 could show very different trends for VR when compared to past years.

The VR industry has been growing rapidly (92.1% in 2021), but it is still a burgeoning market with so much time and space for the platform to improve and evolve, and so it will be interesting to see what the future holds. As it stands however, Virtual Reality IS Meta Quest 2.

One of the more exciting projects to come out of Microsoft in recent years is the HoloLens, a bold push into Augmented Reality. Following the launch of the HoloLens 2 and Microsoft's deal with the US military, we've heard very little about the future of the headset. Recent reports claim that Microsoft internally cancelled a HoloLens 3 and could scrap the HoloLens project entirely,

According to Business Insider, Microsoft scrapped plans for a HoloLens 3 and has been in talks with Samsung to partner with them on building an AR headset instead. Meanwhile, Microsoft will continue ahead with its multi-billion dollar deal to provide custom HoloLens headsets to the US Army.

Of course, such a report has not gone unnoticed by those within Microsoft. While the initial report was based on testimony from employees who have chosen to remain anonymous, Alex Kipman, a leader on the HoloLens project, has spoken out publicly.

In a reply to Twitter users asking about the HoloLens situation, Kipman said “don't believe what you read on the internet”, adding that “HoloLens is doing great”. However, there is still some cause for concern, as pointed out by The Wall Street Journal, more than 70 employees on the HoloLens team have left Microsoft in recent months, with a good chunk of them heading to Meta, likely to work on Zuckerburg's Metaverse vision.

KitGuru Says: Reading between the lines, I believe there is truth on both sides of this story. While the HoloLens might not be scrapped entirely, it seems clear that Microsoft is considering some major changes and recent employee exits may have set back development on next-gen AR tech.

The VR platform is ripe for many different conversions of various video game genres. One that is a natural fit is the city simulation sub-genre. Of this, Cities: Skylines is by far the most popular currently. Taking advantage of this, a VR conversion of Cities: Skylines is coming to the Quest 2 in the form of Cities: VR.

Announced at the recent UploadVR showcase, Cities: VR is a spin-off of the popular Cities: Skylines where “As mayor, you’ll be creating your very own metropolis, having a say in every aspect of city planning from paving roads to placing buildings.”

The game is a natural fit for the Quest and VR as a whole, allowing you to “use Quest’s motion controls to point and click around the map, and the game can be played both from an isometric view and even zooming down into street level,” making sure that the team “adapt Cities: Skylines to VR in a way that is both approachable for new players and a new challenge for Cities veterans.”

Cities: VR is being developed by Fast Travel Games seemingly exclusively for the Meta quest 2, and will officially be out in Spring 2022. With how Cities: Skylines functions, this VR adaptation should prove to be a relatively simple conversion – especially as the format suits the genre nicely and neatly.

In October, Facebook announced that it has a new name – Meta and as part of the company's new mission to trap us all in ‘the metaverse', we'll also be seeing some rebranding for other products. As part of this rebranding effort, the Oculus brand will be replaced in 2022, with the Oculus Quest 2 becoming the Meta Quest 2, and the Oculus store and its various apps will also be rebranded too.

Facebook/Meta initially confirmed plans to replace the Oculus brand in October, alongside the unveiling of Meta, Facebook's new parent company, owning Facebook, Oculus, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and others.

Speaking on the changes, Meta's VP of AR and VR, Andrew Bosworth, explained (via GI.biz) that we'll start to see the retirement of the Oculus brand in early 2022. This will include rebranding the Oculus Quest to Meta Quest, and the Oculus App to the Meta Quest App.

“We all have a strong attachment to the Oculus brand, and this was a very difficult decision to make”, Bosworth said. “While we're changing the brand of the hardware, Oculus will continue to be a core part of our DNA and will live on in things like software and developer tools.”

It's not all bad news here though, as the rebrand will also see Meta dropping the need for a Facebook account to use the Quest 2 headset – a change that caused a lot of backlash when it was first announced.

KitGuru Says: Many of us early VR enthusiasts will likely continue to use the Oculus name out of habit. Calling the headset the Meta Quest or referring to the app as the ‘Meta Store' is going to take some getting used to.

Last year, Facebook made a very sneaky acquisition, snapping up popular GIF sharing platform, Giphy, in a $400 million deal. The acquisition was done privately, and seemingly at a discount, considering the company had recently been valued at $600 million. That little deal quickly caught the attention of regulators, and now, Facebook may be forced to sell.

The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), has ordered Facebook's parent company, Meta, to sell Giphy, after concluding that the acquisition would be harmful to “social media users and UK advertisers”. Crucially, Meta's acquisition of Giphy would allow the company to limit the number of platforms that can access the service, and thus supress competition amongst social media apps.

According to the CMA, Meta's current social media apps, including Messenger, Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, already make up around 73 percent of social media user time. There is concern that Meta could leverage Giphy to further push out competitors, like Twitter, Snapchat and TikTok.

Meta of course disagrees with the CMA's conclusions and does not want to sell Giphy. Speaking with Engadget, a Meta spokesperson said: “We disagree with this decision. We are reviewing the decision and considering all options, including appeal”.

KitGuru Says: The appeals process can be lengthy, so Facebook may be able to hang on to Giphy for a while longer. The CMA also has another major tech-related acquisition investigation on its hands at the moment, as it continues to probe Nvidia's acquisition of Arm.

Qualcomm is an SOC manufacturer known best for their work on mobile and portable devices. One of the company’s customers is Meta (formerly Facebook) who uses Qualcomm chips to power their Quest 2 VR headset. According to Qualcomm, the Quest 2 is estimated to have sold over 10 million units.

During a recent investor day livestream, Qualcomm’s CEO Christiano Amon commented on the company’s partnerships, one of which saw the company work with Meta to provide the SOC for the highly popular Quest 2 virtual reality headset.

According to Amon – and as discovered by Twitter user ‘Anshel Sag’ the “Oculus Quest 2 was [at] 10 million units”. The virtual reality market is still in its relative infancy, and so it is encouraging to see so many units sold in such a short amount of time (the Quest 2 only launched in October 2020).

A Qualcomm spokesperson later clarified these comments to UploadVR, saying “During Qualcomm’s Investor Day event, CEO and President Cristiano Amon highlighted the momentum of the XR business and stated that Quest 2 has shipped an estimated 10 million units. This number is an average of third-party market size estimates from industry analysts, and wasn’t meant as an official disclosure of sales numbers by Meta or Qualcomm.”

While this does mean that the 10 million units figure cannot be taken as gospel until Meta themselves confirm it, Qualcomm of all companies would be privy to the most data (outside of Meta itself) regarding the number of units shipped. This means that even though we must wait for official figures in order to confirm this achievement, it is safe to assume that around 10 million units have been shipped.

While the Quest 2 has seen some controversy due mostly to the actions of parent company Meta, the hardware and software of the Quest 2 manages to pack a great punch – especially for the starting price of £299. It is therefore unsurprising – though still impressive – to see the headset performing so well.

The post KitGuru Games: The Metaverse is killing the video games industry first appeared on KitGuru.]]>

Video games have come a long way from their humble beginnings. What was once a niche and simplistic medium of entertainment has exploded over the past few decades into becoming one of the facilitators for some of the biggest media franchises in the world. The industry is bigger than ever and thriving so healthily – and yet it is being threatened. Video games are art, there is no arguing against that, however the commodification of the industry through the pursuit of a ‘metaverse’ is threatening the artistic integrity of the industry as a whole.

For those who are not in the know, the metaverse is a “neologism typically used to describe the concept of a future iteration of the internet, made up of persistent, shared, 3D virtual spaces linked into a perceived virtual universe”. While this definition is somewhat limited in its application – offering a rather narrow view of the metaverse – it is sufficient enough as a launching point to explain why so many companies are wanting to turn this concept into a reality – and why that’s a bad thing.

One of the key characteristics of the metaverse is the idea of a shared connectedness. While that may seem like a good thing initially, upon further inspection, it is much more sinister. Of course, as mentioned, the idea of the metaverse is simply that for now – an idea. It is nakedly clear that we are heading into this direction however, with the best example currently being Fortnite.

I know it's cool to rag on Fortnite, with many claiming it to be a dead game with a child-heavy playerbase. Regardless of the (un)common consensus of the game, Fortnite is factually and objectively one of the biggest games in the world. The team at Epic Games have used this to the benefit of the game, allowing them to collaborate with major IPs and facilitating some awesome moments. One of the biggest highlights came with the Avengers crossover event allowing players to embody many of the heroes while an entire other group of people played as Thanos and his army. All of this coincided with the release of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame and helped to create a zeitgeist moment such as which many would agree had never been seen before. It helped to elevate Fortnite, the Avengers and the discourse surrounding it all to new heights. One of the primary purposes of the media is to entertain – and entertain it did.

Unfortunately, this success did not go unnoticed, and it is likely to have been the inception of the metaverse beginning to take hold within the video games industry. “So what’s the problem?“ I hear you ask – and you have a valid point! I just discussed how early concepts of the metaverse helped to create an awesome gaming moment, and so if it can do that, why wouldn’t we want more of that? As I said at the beginning, the commodification of the metaverse has already taken a stronghold and it now serves only to extract as much time and money out of people.

While some may consider this slightly extreme, I do believe that the future of the metaverse holds very closely to the theory by Karl Marx on Entfremdung – aka alienation. This theory posits that “the worker invariably loses the ability to determine life and destiny when deprived of the right to think (conceive) of themselves as the director of their own actions; to determine the character of said actions; to define relationships with other people; and to own those items of value from goods and services, produced by their own labour”.

Of course, while Marx was referring to labour here, and not the act of playing video games, his outlook on the commodification of our time is not too dissimilar from the current trajectory that the video games industry is headed in. Once you are in the metaverse, you can never leave.

What Epic Games witnessed with their first major Avengers crossover was the fact that in creating this zeitgeist bubble, they were able to make A LOT of money. Once you hit those kinds of highs however, it is hard to be satisfied with anything less than perpetual growth. This is why Fortnite continued to collaborate with different companies in many different ways. Initially, these crossovers made some semblance of sense. When Borderlands 3 was released, a portion of the map was transformed into the world of Pandora. For some, this was an exciting moment, however it was becoming more clear that these cross promotions were becoming nothing more than opportunities for both companies to extract more money from users. Yes, we live in a capitalist world and the whole point in life is to make money, however the increased commodification has come with a nakedness that leaves a sour taste in the mouth.

All the while, Fortnite continued to collaborate with more and more companies – each of which made less and less sense. Just some of the now dozens of collaborations include Air Jordans; the NFL; the NBA; Ariana Grande; Will Smith from Bad Boys; ‘Dude’ from the ‘hit’ film Free Guy; Ferrari; LeBron James; the app ‘Houseparty’; failed streaming service Quibi and perhaps the most naked example: Balenciaga.

The collaboration between Fortnite and fashion brand Balenciaga is an interesting case study showing how far Fortnite has fallen down the metaverse rabbit hole. Thanks to this collaboration, you could now spend real money to go to a digital shop to buy a digital Fortnite x Balenciaga hoodie, and then back in the real world spend real money on a real version of a digital hoodie which you already spent real money on. Don’t worry though, the hoodie only costs you $725.

When all of the fancy speak is removed, the metaverse is a digital workplace created by the coöptation of the artistic side of the video games industry and turned into pure commodification. This is then further strengthened by the notions of zeitgeist, FOMO, alienation and more. There’s a reason that two of the biggest advocates of the metaverse are also two of the most hated: Facebook (now nakedly named ‘Meta’) and Epic Games.

Fortnite is a cultural phenomenon, and while this influence and popularity could have been used to help do some good – or simply to make a fun game – it was quickly turned into another cog in the money-making machine of life. All the while, people are purposefully kept blind through the constant influx of new content, battle passes, limited-time skins and more. As said by George Orwell “I believe that this instinct to perpetuate useless work is, at bottom, simply fear of the mob. The mob (the thought runs) are such low animals they would be dangerous if they had any leisure; it is safer to keep them too busy to think.”

Video games are beautiful. Video games are amazing. Video games are the ultimate storytelling medium. Video games are art. Unfortunately, it seems as though Epic Games and other supporters of the metaverse have forgotten this fact in the endless pursuit of profits. Hopefully very few choose to follow in their footsteps.

Over the years, Facebook has found itself at the centre of many controversies, from political scandals to privacy violations. Now, the company is hoping to shake off its bad reputation with a rebrand, transforming into ‘Meta'.

Meta is the new name for the parent company behind Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Oculus and more. During Facebook Connect this week, Zuckerberg announced this move as the company attempts to move forward and build the “metaverse”. The way Zuckerberg describes it, the metaverse will essentially be the matrix.

“In the metaverse, you’ll be able to do almost anything you can imagine—get together with friends and family, work, learn, play, shop, create—as well as completely new experiences that don’t really fit how we think about computers or phones today”, Zuckerberg explains.

“In this future, you will be able to teleport instantly as a hologram to be at the office without a commute, at a concert with friends, or in your parents’ living room to catch up. This will open up more opportunity no matter where you live. You’ll be able to spend more time on what matters to you, cut down time in traffic, and reduce your carbon footprint.”

Moving forward, the company will be “metaverse-first” and not “Facebook-first”, meaning over time, connected services won't require a Facebook account for products and services. We're already starting to see this change with Oculus, which is also undergoing a rebrand. In reality, what this likely means is that you'll need a “meta account”, rather than a Facebook account, a move that seems lateral at best.

While Oculus is rebranding, Meta's other services, like Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp will remain untouched.

KitGuru Says: When it comes down to it, whether the company is named Facebook or Meta, all of your information is still going to the same place and the same people. This rebrand doesn't necessarily do anything to address the issues many have with Facebook's services or its mass hoarding of user data.

Back in late 2020, it was announced that all those with an Oculus Quest would soon need to make a Facebook account in order to continue using the headset. This understandably sparked a great deal of backlash. It seems as though the company took this feedback seriously, as it has now been announced that this requirement will soon be removed from the Quest.

Facebook recently held its annual Facebook Connect conference. Alongside the announcement that GTA: San Andreas is coming to the Quest 2, as well as the fact that the Oculus name is being rebranded to Meta Quest, it was revealed that the Quest will soon no longer require a Facebook account in order to login and use the headset.

In a post by Andrew Bozworth, the Chief Technical Officer at Facebook (now Meta), it was announced that the company is reversing its previous decision which forced Quest users to sign in to a Facebook account in order to use the VR headset.

According to Bozworth, “As we’ve focused more on work, and as we’ve heard feedback from the VR community more broadly, we’re working on new ways to log into Quest that won’t require a Facebook account, landing sometime next year. This is one of our highest priority areas of work internally.”

This marks a positive change for the platform, especially as Facebook has garnered a great deal of distrust over the course of many years, leading some VR fans to actively choose to not purchase a Quest due to this requirement. The decision to remove this requirement will ultimately prove to be beneficial not only to the fans, but to Facebook too. Hopefully this separation will come with no catches.

Hot off the heels of the successful launch of Resident Evil 4 VR, Facebook has now announced that another classic third person video game is being translated into VR for the Oculus Quest 2. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has officially been announced to be coming exclusively to the Oculus Quest 2 – the second major game to do so.

At the recent Facebook Connect conference, the company announced many new changes and additions coming to the VR market. Alongside the announcement that the Oculus name will be rebranded under Facebook’s new name (Meta), it was revealed that the Oculus (now Meta) Quest 2 will be receiving a VR port of the highly popular Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Making the announcement, the company said “Today at Connect, we announced that the Rockstar Games classic Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is in development for Quest 2. Get a new perspective on Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas as you experience (again or for the first time) one of gaming’s most iconic open worlds. This is a project many years in the making, and we can’t wait to show you more of it.”

While little is known about the game currently, according to UploadVR, the game will be exclusive to Quest 2, just as Resident Evil 4 VR was. Furthermore, as with that game, GTA: San Andreas will be translated into first-person, offering a whole new look at the city of San Andreas.

With GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas all receiving remasters, it is interesting to see only San Andreas being brought to VR. That being said, if there were a GTA game to get a VR port, it would understandably be San Andreas.

GTA V offered fans their initial taste of a first-person GTA game. Playing San Andreas in VR is certainly the next step up from that. It will be interesting to see how the game looks, and whether it will benefit from any of the improvements seen in the upcoming remaster.

The post The Oculus brand is no more. Say hello to the Meta Quest first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
Facebook recently held its latest annual ‘Facebook Connect’, where the company announced many new changes both internally and externally. Alongside the announcement that the Facebook umbrella company is now called Meta, it was also announced that the Oculus brand is being retired, with the Oculus Quest now being called the Meta Quest.

Andrew Bozworth, the previous Vice President of AR and VR at Facebook has now been promoted to Chief Technology Officer. As part of this, Bosworth announced many new changes coming to Oculus. Firstly, Facebook Reality Labs is no more, with Bozworth explaining “One year ago we changed our org name from AR/VR to Facebook Reality Labs as a way to encompass the expansive work we do. We're updating our name again to Reality Labs for the very same reason — to better make the connection that our org is building the technology that will enable the future metaverse.”

Discussing the ‘metaverse’, Bosworth revealed that Oculus as a brand is also being changed, with him saying “VR will be the most immersive way for people to access the metaverse and as we look toward our goal of bringing 1B people into VR, we want to make it clear that Quest is a Meta product. For this reason, we're simplifying our brand architecture and shifting away from the Oculus brand. Starting in early 2022, you'll start to see the shift from Oculus Quest from Facebook to Meta Quest and Oculus App to Meta Quest App over time.”

Explaining this change, he said “We all have a strong attachment to the Oculus brand, and this was a very difficult decision to make. While we're retiring the name, I can assure you that the original Oculus vision remains deeply embedded in how Meta will continue to drive mass adoption for VR today.”

The Oculus name has grown significantly over the years, however so too has the Quest brand. It would seem that Facebook (now Meta) believes that the Quest name is enough to carry the future devices for now – at least until the ‘Meta’ brand is equally as known. While some may see this as a simple name change, it is indicative of much greater changes happening. Hopefully these changes are for the better.

In a blog post last night, Facebook's engineering team apologised for the downtime. The issue came about after configuration changes were made to the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between Facebook's data centres, cutting lines of communication and taking services down. It wasn't just users affected, Facebook employees couldn't access buildings or use their key cards due to everything being controlled by IoT devices, which were also knocked offline during the outage.

“Our engineering teams have learned that configuration changes on the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between our data centres caused issues that interrupted this communication. This disruption to network traffic had a cascading effect on the way our data centres communicate, bringing our services to a halt.”

During the outage, there was a rumour spreading that Facebook had been hacked and that massive amounts of user data may have been stolen. Facebook says there is “no evidence that user data was compromised as a result of this downtime”.

KitGuru Says: Yesterday's outage seemed to catch everyone by surprise and as you would expect, the stock market acted accordingly, wiping billions of dollars off of Zuckerburg's net worth. With everything now back to normal, all of that will likely bounce back like nothing ever happened.

Recently a CDN issue knocked out some of the world's most popular and often used websites for a period of time. Now, Facebook seems to be having its own infrastructure problems, with Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram all going offline as part of a major outage.

All three apps were knocked offline at around 5PM BST, other connected apps, such as the Facebook Pages manager, are also offline. Currently, the outage appears to be impacting all three apps globally, not just in a few regions.

Facebook and its other apps like WhatsApp and Instagram rarely have outages, particularly on this scale. The company has yet explain what the issue is, or give a timeline for when it will be fixed.

One thing is for sure, it'll be interesting to see global internet traffic numbers and the impact that a Facebook outage can have at this point in time. While Facebook is often embroiled in controversy, the company still owns and operates the largest social networks and messaging platforms in the world.

While John Carmack and other members of the Oculus team did have plans for an Oculus Go 2 headset, the success of the Oculus Quest forced the company to recalibrate, dropping all other projects to double down on the Quest. As a result, there will be no more updates for the Oculus Go and the entry-level headset has been discontinued. To ensure it doesn't die out completely though, Oculus will be making an unlocked OS available.

On Twitter last week, John Carmack confirmed that after plenty of pushing internally, the company will be making an “unlocked OS build for the Oculus Go headset”, which can be side loaded to get full root access. This opens the door for developers to really experiment and play around with the headset.

One of the key reasons Carmack wanted to do this is simply to ensure the Oculus Go is still usable in the future. Now, the hardware can be repurposed, and someone that discovers an Oculus Go decades from now will be able to update it to the final software version, long after the official update servers have gone offline.

For now, Oculus is only doing this for the Go, but Carmack hopes it can set a precedent for other devices too. Perhaps we'll see the original Rift, or the Rift S unlocked eventually, as both of those headsets have also been discontinued at this point, although there are still plenty widely in use and generating software sales through the Oculus platform.

KitGuru Says: With this move, Oculus Go headsets won't turn into VR paperweights years in the future. Better yet, it'll be interesting to see what developers can do with the headset once the OS is fully unlocked.

Back in June, we learned that Facebook was preparing to relaunch the Oculus Quest 2 with more storage, ditching the 64GB option and replacing it with a 128GB model, allowing more games to squeeze on to the headset's internal storage. Now, the new Oculus Quest 2 is officially available, offering 128GB of storage for the same price as the 64GB model – £299.

Initially, marketing material for this change leaked. Today, Facebook is confirming it, introducing the new 128GB Oculus Quest 2 headset, replacing the 64GB option at the £299 price mark. Those who want even more storage can opt for a 256GB model instead, which sells for £399.

At the time of writing, the 128GB model is in stock in the UK, but anyone looking to buy the 256GB model will need to shop around, as the Oculus website is currently out of stock.

This news follows on from a recent recall of Oculus Quest 2 foam facial interfaces due to reports of skin irritation. Oculus now includes a new faceplate with all Quest 2 units.

KitGuru Says: Are any of you planning on picking up an Oculus Quest 2 this year? Will you be opting for the 128GB model or the 256GB one?

Last night, Facebook announced a voluntary recall of Oculus Quest 2 foam facial interfaces due to a small percentage of customers reporting skin irritation. For now, Oculus aims to replace all foam coverings with a new silicone cover, which also means new Quest 2 sales will be temporarily halted.

Over on Amazon and the Oculus Store, Facebook has stopped taking orders for the Quest 2. Instead, there is a notification button so that prospective buyers can be notified when stock returns. For now, it looks like Quest 2 sales will be halted for several weeks at least.

As part of the recall announcement, Oculus revealed that it is working to ensure all future Quest 2 shipments include the silicone facial interface instead of the foam one. This change should take place starting from the 24th of August, at which point sales will presumably continue.

Anyone who already has an Oculus Quest 2 can head to the recall page and claim a free silicone facial interface to replace their current one.

KitGuru Says: The Oculus Quest 2 has been a huge seller, so pausing sales is a pretty big deal. In a few weeks time, it looks like the headset will be able to go on sale once again with this new tweak in place.

The Oculus Quest 2 has been out for quite some time now, but it would seem that a small number of users have experienced skin irritation after wearing the headset with its standard removable foam faceplate. Now, Oculus is issuing a voluntary recall.

Oculus announced today that it is participating in a voluntary recall of the Oculus Quest 2 removable foam facial interface. A small number of users experienced skin irritation while using the Quest 2 with the foam interface, forcing Oculus to revisit its manufacturing process and make adjustments.

Quest 2 buyers will be able to send back their foam facial interface and Oculus will replace it with a free silicone cover instead. This applies to all Quest 2 headset and Quest 2 Fit Pack owners across the world. If anyone has an Oculus Quest 2 and experiences skin irritation, then it is recommended that you stop using the headset and take advantage of the recall for a replacement face covering.

Since launch, the Oculus Quest 2 has outsold all previous Oculus VR headsets combined, so there are a lot of replacements to be sent out. You can find full instructions and details on the recall, HERE.

The Oculus Quest 2 quickly became one of the most popular VR headsets following its release late last year, thanks to its solid hardware and relatively cheap price. One of the system’s few downsides was its base storage, which offered just 64GB. Now, it seems as though Oculus and Facebook are doubling this storage at the lower end to allow for bigger and better games.

Though not officially confirmed, new marketing material for the Oculus Quest 2 has leaked, which seems to suggest that the current 64GB model of the VR headset will be replaced with a 128GB model – meaning that prospective buyers will soon be able to choose between 128GB and 256GB.

Currently, the 64GB variant costs £299, with the 256GB model charging £399. According to insiders, this new 128GB model will be replacing the 64GB variant, and will still only charge £299 for it – making the already great value for money even better.

Of course, Oculus has suffered with a number of controversies recently due to their owners (Facebook) embedding themselves more and more into the ecosystem, with ads being placed directly into games, a Facebook account being required and more. Still, for those who are unbothered by Facebook’s tactics, the Oculus Quest 2 represents one of the best deals in VR currently – and with this latest change, it has only become even better value.

Back in May, we learned that Netflix was mulling over a bigger push into the video game industry and was looking to hire experienced industry veterans to help. Now, it seems that Netflix has made its first big gaming hire, putting former Oculus exec, Mike Verdu, as VP of game development.

According to Bloomberg, Mike Verdu is joining Netflix as Vice President of Game Development. Previously, Verdu worked at Facebook/Oculus to bring games and content to VR headsets. He also previously had a stint working at EA. Now at Netflix, he will be accelerating Netflix's plans to get games showing up on the streaming platform.

One source claimed that Netflix is looking to be able to stream video games to customers within the next year. Rather than launching a separate service for gaming, Netflix's video game offerings will apparently appear alongside other ‘new programming', like new TV shows and movies.

Netflix is also not currently planning to charge extra for a video game tier, although that could change by the time this launches. There is also the chance that Netflix raises its subscription price again for all tiers to compensate for investing in this new content medium.

KitGuru Says: Netflix seems to be set on pushing into gaming, although we may not see any content officially announced until next year. Do you think Netflix can succeed by offering games to stream alongside TV shows and movies?

Earlier this month, Facebook announced plans to begin testing advertisements inside Oculus Quest apps. These new in-VR ads would be tested across a few different apps and games, leading to a wave of negative reviews for certain titles and forcing at least on developer to reconsider.

Facebook's VR ads won't be limited to free to play apps or games. One paid title, Blaston from Resolution Games, was set to be included in the advertising test, which in turn caused an uproar of negative reviews for the game. Now, based on that feedback, Resolution Games is backing away.

Speaking with The Verge, Resolution Games CEO, Tommy Palm, said: “We appreciate all of the feedback and thoughts on the Oculus ad test for Blaston and other games that was announced last week. Some good points have been made, and we realize that Blaston isn’t the best fit for this type of advertising test. Therefore, we no longer plan to implement the test in Blaston.”

Resolution Games may still be involved in the advertising test, but instead it will be with a free game, known as ‘Bait!'. Right now, this title is being explored as an alternative but the studio is still seeking feedback.

KitGuru Says: While some developers may back away, there is no chance Facebook drops plans to bring advertising to VR, so all we can do is hope that they won't be intrusive. VR is all about immersion and if we start getting ads for cat food in the middle of games, then that immersion breaks.
