Today we are going to take a look at one of Corsair’s latest solid state drives, the Force LX 512 GB. This is targeted at the mainstream enthusiast audience, seeking to deliver a good balance between cost and performance.

With the price of NAND having come down significantly over the past few years, solid state drives are starting to reach prices which are affordable to the masses. This makes it the perfect time for Corsair to launch the Force LX range of mainstream drives alongside their more established performance ranges.

It’s worth noting, before we start looking at the Corsair Force LX 512 GB in more detail, that this drive is available in 128 GB, 256 GB and 512 GB flavours and that the claimed write performance of each capacity is different.

Corsair claim that all of the drives offer sequential read speed up to 560 MB/s, and the claimed sequential read speeds for the 512 GB, 256 GB and 128 GB models are 450 MB/s, 300 MB/s and 150 MB/s respectively.

Megatron would be proud. While mere mortals scratch around trying to make 60/120GB SSD drives last for the lifetime of their system, those armed with 240GB and above have managed to look suitably smug. Until now. KitGuru pulls out the trusty abacus to see exactly how many NAND gates have been included in this offer.

Crucial is one of those rare companies that actually makes the products it sells.

We're not saying that being a manufacturer is better than being a brand, it can give you serious advantages when it comes to delivering the latest/greatest/cheapest products in town.

Samsung recently announced a series of killer SSD products, weighing in at 400/800/1600GB – with the ability to move 500Gb of data, from here to there, in less than 3 minutes. And we were suitably impressed. But the pricing on something like that tends to keep it in the ‘supercar/unobtainable' space. But getting close to 1TB of SSD for less than £450?  Now THAT is a seriously accessible offer.

Close to 1TB of SSD for less than £450? Impressive - especially considering the 500/400 MB/sec performance

.
KitGuru says: We knew it was coming, we just didn't know when. While Windows 8 was a complete flop and Haswell is only just starting to glow, the idea of a wave of affordable SSD products in the PLUS 500GB space is enough to make any tech-lover go moist.

Over the past couple of years we have seen most large PC and mobile manufacturers release a tablet of some form or another.  So it's no surprise that Acer have designed their own range of tablets.  The Iconia A1-810 isn't their cheapest model, but is still part of their value range. It seeks to differentiate itself from the competition by boasting a larger-than-average 7.9″ screen, akin to that of the iPad Mini.

Only our most eagle-eyed readers will be able to tell the difference between this latest kit of Kingston's HyperX Beast memory and the one we reviewed back in December here.

While the performance credentials of the two kits are identical, Kingston have added the option of a black PCB to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the HyperX series. We imagine that the meticulous enthusiasts out there who would go to the end of the earth to colour co-ordinate their systems will love this option.

Kingston were kind enough to send us one of these new memory kits so we've taken a few photographs so that you can have a close up view and see how they look.  We have also included some photos from the original article for comparison purposes.

For a technical overview of the modules and an insight into their performance, check out our review over HERE.

When KitGuru Labs put the 240GB OCZ Agility 3 under our powerful performance microscope in 2011, we were left surprised that such performance was possible in a drive that cost less than £400. Today's latest offer from eBuyer takes OCZ's hugely impressive drive and makes it affordable for everyone. KitGuru picks up a pair of tweezers and eyes the piggy bank.

In life, it's nice to be able to use quotes.

When you're able to quote yourself, it's even better.

Given eBuyer's price move on the 240GB OCZ Agility 3, we're drawn to the conclusion we made in May 2011:-

The main bonus with the Agility 3 drives will be the price point… Coming in at under £380 inc vat when they hit retail in the UK“.

Things move on in IT.

Sometimes we need to take a step back and appreciate just how far/fast this market continues to develop.

New technology, coming later this year, will mean that even larger drives will follow. Once issues of long-term stability have also been put to rest, we can see a massive move in data centres to a faster/more reliable technology that draws a fraction of the power.

For now, the chance for a 240GB KitGuru Must Have SSD for less than £110 is an attractive proposition.

Serious capacity with a 525/500MB/sec performance classification
Serious capacity with a 525/500MB/sec performance classification. For 110 squids? Not bad.

KitGuru says: If you own a laptop with a cruddy 5,400 rpm spinning disk, then this kind of upgrade is a must. If you're contemplating building a new rig, then surely pairing a 240GB SSD with a pair of 2/3/4TB data drives is the perfect set up?

Even though solid state drives have come down significantly in price over the past year, cache drives are still quite popular with those who want to enjoy the performance gains an SSD has to offer, without a large expense.  They can also be added to existing mechanical hard drive systems to boost performance.

Today we are going to take a belated look at the Corsair Accelerator SSD in both 30 GB and 60 GB capacities.  We will be comparing them in our tests to a single mechanical hard drive and a single solid state drive to give you an idea of how their performance compares.

These drives use custom software which has an advantage over Intel's Smart Response Technology as they can be used with pretty much any platform, rather than being restricted to Z68 and Z77.

The Kingston HyperX solid state drive is  regarded as one of the best performing drives on the market, featuring the latest Sandforce SF-2281 controller.  Being an top-end drive, it has a high price tag to match which may not be affordable for some enthusiasts.

With this in mind, Kingston have released a new version of their HyperX drive, the 3K which features 3K NAND instead of the 5K NAND that features in the original HyperX SSD.  Kingston claim that the performance difference between the two drives are very small.  The change in NAND means that the new drive has less endurance and won't last as long.  But for the vast majority of users, the drive will still last a very long time.

The HyperX 3K SSD loads games and applications faster, increases frames-per-second for an improved gaming experience and allows for quick transfers and edits of large media files. It has incredible sequential read/write throughputs of 555/510MB/s and max random R/W 85,000/74,000 IOPS. HyperX 3K SSD features SandForce DuraClass™ technology to provide best in class endurance and to maximize life span and durability under the most intensive environments.

“Kingston is devoted to offering the best upgrade solution for every market segment. The new Kingston HyperX 3K SSD is specifically designed to meet the needs of budget-minded gamers, PC enthusiasts and Audio/Visual professionals looking for powerful upgrades.” said Krystian Jaroszynski European product Manager – USB, SSD & HyperX. “We are thrilled to offer a SSD that combines HyperX performance and Kingston quality at a lower price.”

Shipping in 90GB, 120GB, 240GB, and 480GB capacities, HyperX 3K SSD comes in a sleek black and aluminium case design, accentuating the look of any power user’s system. It is available as either a stand-alone drive or in an upgrade kit to make installation easy and quick. HyperX 3K SSD is backed by a three-year warranty and free technical support.  Pricing is detailed in the table above.

Samsung are a major player in a very wide and varied number of fields … such as TVs and Smartphones.  But, behind the consumer brand, they produce a wide range of components including memory and, more recently, solid state drives.

There has never been such a wide selection of solid state drives available on the market before from so many different manufacturers. This can make it confusing for some consumers, when it comes to deciding on a purchase. KitGuru spend a lot of time looking at the latest performance SSDs like the Patriot Wildfire and OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS, but many people are willing to compromise a little on performance, to save some cash.

Today we are going to look at the 320 Series 300 GB solid state drive from Intel which is aimed at users who need a reliable drive with plenty of capacity … it has been out for a while now, but it still a big seller for the processor giant.

While it doesn't quite boast the same performance figures as the latest Sandforce drives, the claimed read and write speeds of 270 MB/s and 205 MB/s should satisfy the performance demands for a wide audience.

Specification
