Lexar's latest portable SSD has arrived, bringing with it faster speeds, USB Type-C connectivity and wide compatibility for gaming PCs and consoles, as well as smartphones like the iPhone 15.

The Lexar SL500 Portable SSD features a slim, aluminium unibody, making it small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, or on the back of an iPhone. With USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, you can expect read/write speeds of up to 2000MB/s and 1800MB/s. This makes it a decent option for portable game installs, whether they be for PC, Xbox One, or the PS4. Due to the requirements for running Xbox Series X/S and PS5 games from a secondary drive, you would only be able to use the drive for storing current-gen console titles.

The big selling point here is the mobile support. The SL500 Portable is compatible with Apple Pro Res recording, so you can shoot video straight to the drive at full 4K and 60FPS with an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max. The SSD also comes with Lexar DataShield 256-bit AES encryption to keep files protected.

The SL500 Portable SSD is available in 2TB at $229.99 and will be available in a 4TB capacity at the end of Q2.

Last week, Apple banned Epic Games' iOS development account once again, just days after reinstating access. Epic Games was quick to point this out publicly and the European Commission swiftly began asking Apple questions about the new ban. Now, Apple has reversed its decision.

Within days of banning Epic once again, Apple has now reinstated the company's access to its iOS developer account. This means Epic Games can continue to work towards bringing Fortnite back to iOS, alongside its own store app.

In an update to the company's March 6th blog post revealing the ban, Epic Games said: “Apple has told us and committed to the European Commission that they will reinstate our developer account. This sends a strong signal to developers that the European Commission will act swiftly to enforce the Digital Markets Act and hold gatekeepers accountable. We are moving forward as planned to launch the Epic Games Store and bring Fortnite back to iOS in Europe.”

Now whether or not Apple finds a new reason to ban Epic Games still remains to be seen. Apple first banned the company's accounts and Fortnite from iOS after Epic Games shipped an update to the game that implemented a discounted payment method, circumventing Apple Pay entirely. This sparked a years-long legal battle and debate amongst regulators who believe Apple and Google hold a monopoly in the mobile software market. The European Commission has since introduced new rules that will force Apple to open iOS up to competing services, something that the company isn't too happy about.

Apple is sticking with its decision to keep Epic Games' development account for iOS closed. The news follows on from Epic Games' planned return to iOS later this year and now, EU regulators appear to be getting involved.

Epic Games explained that its iOS developer account access has been terminated again. According to Epic, Apple cited ‘public criticism' against the company, claiming that Epic Games is a ‘threat' to Apple's ecosystem. Epic CEO, Tim Sweeney, took to Twitter to share the post that Apple took issue with. It is a tweet from February 26th of this year, in which Sweeney offers his opinion of Apple's recent moves.

Now, as spotted by Bloomberg, the European Commission is getting involved, with a spokesperson confirming that it has “requested further explanations” from Apple regarding its decision to block Epic's developer access to iOS. The Commission wants to examine whether or not Apple has breached its digital market rules.

Apple is in a spot of bother already in the EU, as the commission recently imposed a €1.2 billion fine on the company following a successful complaint from rival streaming service provider, Spotify. Apple is also having to come to grips with the EU's Digital Markets Act, which will force certain parts of Apple's business to operate differently. The EU has also recently forced Apple to adopt the USB-C standard for the iPhone moving forward, doing away with the proprietary Lightning connector.

KitGuru Says: There appears to be lingering animosity between Apple and Epic Games. Now we'll have to see how involved the EU will get here and if it will be able to force Apple to grant access to Epic Games to develop software for iOS.

All the way back in 2020, Apple removed Fortnite from its iOS App Store in response to efforts by Epic to circumvent the company’s store fees. 3 and a half years later, it seems the two companies have found common ground, with Apple finally unbanning Epic’s developer account.

Apple recently updated many of its terms and services, allowing for game streaming services to come to the iOS platform, alongside a whole host of other EU-mandated changes. This will allow Epic Games to bring Fortnite back to the platform and then some.

Following immediate confirmation that Fortnite will return to iPhones later this year, Epic Games have now announced the next big step towards its return, with the Fortnite creator taking to Twitter to say:

“We are bringing more opportunities to developers across all platforms and we’re so excited about what’s to come.… including bringing the Epic Games Store to iOS in Europe. Dev account secured, let’s go!”

Adding his own personal thoughts on this recent change, Epic’s CEO Tim Sweeney replied, saying “I'll be the first to acknowledge a good faith move by Apple amidst our cataclysmic antitrust battle, in granting Epic Games Sweden AB a developer account for operating Epic Games Store and Fortnite in Europe under the Digital Markets Act.”

While it seems as though for now the return of Epic Games to iOS will be limited to Europe, after almost 4 years this marks a major step in bringing one of the most popular games currently back to Apple users. Hopefully the iPhone maker chooses to expand its latest terms and services globally.

Thanks to the recent passing of the Digital Markets act in the EU, Apple has had its hand forced into opening up its iOS App Store. One of the biggest changes as a result is that app developers can now with greater ease bring cloud-based game streaming services to iPhones and iPad. Unfortunately for Xbox fans, Microsoft’s streaming solution will not come to the platform, with Xbox Head Phil Spencer claiming “there's not room for us to monetize Xbox Cloud Gaming on iOS.”

Following the announcement that Microsoft is set to bring 4 of its Xbox titles to other platforms, Tom Warren (via The Verge) sat down with Xbox head Phil Spencer to discuss these recent announcements and more. When asked “is there room for Xbox Cloud Gaming now on iOS” following the recent changes to Apple’s App Store policies, Spencer claimed:

“There’s not room for us to monetize Xbox Cloud Gaming on iOS. I think the proposal that Apple put forward — and I thought Sarah Bond’s comments on this were right on — doesn’t go far enough to open up. In fact, you might even say they go the opposite direction in some way, but they definitely don’t go far enough to open up competition on the world’s largest gaming platform.”

The Head of Xbox continued, “We will continue to work with regulators, and Apple and Google, to create a space for alternative storefronts. I’m a big fan of how Windows works, and you’ve got a Microsoft Store on Windows, you’ve got Steam, you’ve got the Epic Games Store, you’ve got GOG. You have alternatives, and I think alternative ways for people to buy things creates goodness for consumers and creators. I think the largest platform for gamers, which is mobile, should have the same.”

While this statement does stray from Microsoft’s stated goal of making every screen an Xbox, it is quite clear based on Spencer’s wording that the plan is to bring an Xbox App Store to the platform eventually, allowing them to maximise the amount of revenue/profit they can amass. That said, we will simply have to wait and see.

Over the past few years, we have seen a rise in the number of game streaming services, including but not limited to Microsoft’s xCloud and Nvidia’s GeForce Now. Unfortunately, Apple has for years stood in the way of these services coming to its iOS platform – until now.

Making the announcement on their developer website, the trillion dollar company said “Today, Apple is introducing new options for how apps globally can deliver in-app experiences to users, including streaming games and mini-programs. Developers can now submit a single app with the capability to stream all of the games offered in their catalog.”

They continue, “Apps will also be able to provide enhanced discovery opportunities for streaming games, mini-apps, mini-games, chatbots, and plug-ins that are found within their apps.”

The full details on exactly how this works and the extent of its support can be found HERE. but in essence it seems as though the company is finally fully embracing such streaming services. Apple caught heat back in 2020 for their response to the rise in game streaming on mobile – heavily gimping the service on iOS and making it essentially useless.

It is therefore highly exciting to see that iOS users can finally stream games to their iPhones/iPads using a native and official app. Hopefully the App Store only continues to open up further.

Back in June of last year, Hideo Kojima announced that the award-winning open world ‘strand-type’ game Death Stranding would be coming to Apple’s Mac platform. This was later followed up by the reveal that the game would also be coming to the latest iPhone models. Initially intended to release late last year, Death Stranding has now gotten an official iOS release date,

Making the announcement via a press release, the team at Kojima Productions said “DEATH STRANDING DIRECTOR'S CUT, the definitive version of the genre-defying action game directed by Hideo Kojima and starring Norman Reedus, makes the trek onto Apple devices on Tuesday, January 30, 2024. The game will be available on iPhone 15 Pro models powered by the A17 Pro chip and every iPad and Mac with M-series chips.”

The game will cost $39.99 at launch, but during the pre-order period you can get the title for 50% off, bringing it down to just $19.99 – a great deal for what is arguably one of the most unique AAA games of the past generation.

Death Stranding marks the 3rd AAA game to come to Apple’s latest iPhones, with Resident Evil Village and RE4 Remake coming out late last year. With each of those titles taking a different approach to graphical and performance options, it will be interesting to see how Death Stranding’s settings are presented when the game launches in a week’s time.

Due to new regulations in the EU, Apple will soon be allowing app side-loading on iOS devices. This means iPhone users will be able to freely install apps on their devices without going through the App Store directly. Now, we have a good idea of when this change will come into place.

The European Union's Digital Markets Act went into effect back in late 2022, requiring platform holders to open up their platforms. While side-loading is already possible on Android devices, it has not been available on iOS, outside of allowing developers to install beta apps for testing. However, this will change in 2024.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in the latest issue of the Power On newsletter, Apple will introduce a “highly controlled system” that will allow users to install apps hosted outside of the App Store on iOS. Previous rumours claimed this change could arrive with iOS 17.2 but Gurman's new report contradicts this, claiming that the update will arrive in the first half of 2024.

While Apple complied with EU rules to bring USB-C to the iPhone worldwide, it is possible that side-loading apps will only be made available within the EU but we have yet to get full confirmation on Apple's plans. If current information is accurate, all will be made clear in the coming months, possibly ahead of Apple's annual WWDC event in June.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Many users will argue that one of the strengths of iOS is its highly optimised environment and the curated nature of the App Store. However, neither of these things should be hampered by the introduction of side-loading. Now we'll just have to wait and see how Apple's ‘controlled' solution will work and if it will be available worldwide, or just within EU countries.

During Apple’s recent iPhone event, the company announced their latest push into the gaming market, revealing that a bunch of full-on console titles would be making their way onto Apple’s latest and great iPhone 15 Pros. At the time, no release dates were given, though we now know when the first of these console games are set to arrive – with Resident Evil Village launching next month.

As reported by Gematsu, Capcom have officially announced the release date for Resident Evil Village on iPhones and iPad, revealing that the game will arrive just in time for Halloween on the 30th of October. While we do not yet have full pricing details, in Japan the base game will cost 4990 yen (converted to £27.50), with the Winters’ Expansion costing an additional 2000 yen (£11.02). That said, there will be some form of trial, with the opening sequences being playable for free.

Another Capcom title set to come to iPhone is the recently-released Resident Evil 4 Remake. No release date was provided (though is still promised to be coming some time this year), but the game’s price was revealed with the remake set to cost 7990 yen (£44.03) plus an additional 1000 yen (£5.51) for the Separate Ways DLC. Just like with Village however, the early portions of the game will be free to try out.

The mobile gaming market has historically been relatively cheap when compared to console gaming (not including microtransactions), and so it will be curious to see how these games perform on mobile.

Even the most premium mobile ports have typically landed at around £20 or less, and so to see a game such as RE4 Remake costing more than double that is interesting indeed. That said, bringing these massive AAA games to mobile is an exciting development and so hopefully more studios follow suit.

As mobile hardware has gotten more and more performant over the years, we have seen an increasing number of console games find their way onto iOS and Android platforms. Apple looks to be taking this one step further, announcing a suite of modern AAA console titles which are set to be natively playable on their latest and great iPhone 15 Pro.

Announced during the company’s recent ‘Wonderlust’ event, a number of new devices were shown off, including the Apple Watch Series 9; Apple Watch Ultra and of course the iPhone 15 series.

Unexpectedly, the smartphone manufacturer seems to be pushing into the gaming space in a rather aggressive manner, announcing that 4 current-gen AAA console titles are set to arrive on the higher-end iPhone 15 Pros:

  • Resident Evil Village (later in 2023)
  • Resident Evil 4 (later in 2023)
  • Death Stranding (later in 2023)
  • Assassin's Creed Mirage (early 2024)

As mentioned, in recent years we have seen a number of console games find their way onto mobile platforms, though typically they are ports of indie titles. That said, some rather chunky games are currently playable on mobile, including Genshin Impact and Fortnite.

Despite this, Apple’s latest announcement serves as the strongest indicator yet that over time we will see more and more AAA titles find their way onto mobile platforms. With these devices being so costly and offering high-resolution OLED panels, gaming on phones can offer a genuinely premium experience, and so it is encouraging to see Apple leading the way.

Hopefully it will only be a matter of time before all games are released across consoles, PC and mobile concurrently.

Apple has been trying to break up with Qualcomm for years. The two companies entered a massive legal battle after Apple tried to switch to Intel for its future supply of modems for iPhones. Apple eventually acquired Intel's modem business and has been hard at work developing its own in-house solution. However, it isn't ready for action yet, leading to an extension of Apple's current deal with Qualcomm.

Qualcomm's agreement with Apple to supply chips for the iPhone was set to expire this year. However, it was recently extended to 2026, as reported by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. This means the 2024, 2025 and 2026 iPhone models will all continue to utilise Qualcomm tech.

Apple may introduce its own modem chips in an iPhone before that date, but the phasing out of Qualcomm chips will be gradual. Qualcomm reportedly expects to be supplying chips for 20 percent of iPhones by 2026, which is when the newly extended deal will expire, assuming Apple doesn't seek another extension.

Apple has been working towards producing its own chips for years now in an effort to lower its reliance on outside partners. This initiative has impacted not only Apple's mobile devices but its Mac computer business as well. Macs no longer use Intel or AMD chips and instead use Apple's own M-series processors for both CPU and GPU-related tasks.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Apple is still working towards its separation from Qualcomm but it does appear to be taking longer than expected. When the new supply deal was forged in 2019, the plan was to have Qualcomm down to supplying 20 percent of modems by 2023. Now, that milestone isn't expected until 2026.

Due to EU regulations forcing smartphone makers to stick to a universal charging standard, Apple is set to unveil the first USB-C iPhone this year, finally doing away with the Lightning port. The iPhone may not be the only Apple device moving to USB-C though.

For years, the iPad Pro has utilised USB-C for charging and MacBooks also use USB-C nowadays. The only outliers in Apple's line-up are the iPhone and the AirPods charging case, but that should change for both products in just a matter of weeks.

According to Bloomberg's sources, Apple is not only updating the iPhone to USB-C but will also update the AirPods Pro charging case with USB-C as well. If true, this means that after years of fragmentation, Apple device owners can finally be able to use one cable across all their devices.

Android users will have been using USB-C for years already and at this point, most devices use the port for charging, making alternatives like micro USB rare.

Apple is set to hold its annual iPhone launch event on the 12th of September.

Earlier this week, we heard that Apple was planning to have 85 million iPhone 15 units made this year, showing confidence in this year's launch. However, Apple will also be asking for more money, particularly for its Pro models, which are set to get a significant price increase.

As reported by Apple Hub, Barclays analyst, Tim Long, has predicted an up to $200 price increase for the iPhone 15 Pro line-up. The iPhone 15 Pro is expected to increase to $1,099, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max may end up reaching a new price high of $1,299.

These phones were already pretty expensive but they also carried some substantial upgrades over the standard model iPhones, including significant camera improvements and additional processing power. Bloomberg previously reported that Apple is considering a price hike for its iPhone 15 Pro line-up, but didn't report potential specification upgrades.

While a price raise for the iPhone 15 Pro models is predicted, no pricing changes are expected for the standard iPhone 15 or the bigger Plus model.

KitGuru Says: While enthusiasts will always want the best of the best, I don't think everyday users will miss out on much by opting to save money with the standard iPhone. The standard model still sets a high bar and often, you'll also get slightly better battery life out of it.

Ahead of the console’s launch back in 2020, many PlayStation 5 fans were surprised and endeared to see the announcement of Bugsnax – a colourful adventure game set on Snaktooth Island, home to half-bug half-snack creatures. Following its eventual release on all other console platforms, Bugsnax has now found its way onto iOS.

Back in May it was announced that the creature-catching PS5 launch exclusive Bugsnax would be coming to iOS devices. Now, the game is officially available, with the team publishing a press release saying:

“Young Horses is thrilled to announce that their whimsical snak catching island adventure, Bugsnax, is available now on the App Store! This release includes the content from the previously released DLC – The Isle of BIGsnax – and brings an entirely new control scheme via touch screens, while also supporting a wide array of third party gamepads.”

Bugsnax launched back in 2020 for £17.99. Unsurprisingly however, despite the game’s parity with consoles, the iOS version costs just $9.99 – not a bad deal especially considering its support for controllers.

Bugsnax is a deceptively cute game in which all may not be as it seems. If you have yet to give the game a go, this new iOS version presents a great opportunity.

Over the last few years, Apple has been slowly adjusting the iPhone line-up to allow for more high-end options, with some upgrades being locked to ‘Pro' grade devices. Now, Apple is apparently considering adding a new ‘Ultra' model to its roster.

According to a recent Bloomberg report, Apple is planning to introduce a new flagship iPhone, starting with the iPhone 16 in 2024. This new model will be a further beefed-up version of the phone, slotting in above the current Pro and Max models in the iPhone line-up. For reference, an iPhone 14 Pro starts at £1099, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max starts at £1199, meaning an Ultra model would likely end up going for closer to £1300, if not more.

While Apple is apparently kicking around this idea internally, the report does not include any details on what the ‘killer' feature might be. The Pro model iPhone already offers camera, processor and screen upgrades over the base model. Perhaps this would end up being the first iPhone to support the Apple Pencil.

It is also possible that Apple introduces a special design gimmick to try and reel in sales. This could be in the form of a portless iPhone that relies solely on wireless charging, or perhaps in the form of a foldable iPhone – something that Apple has reportedly been working on for quite some time.

KitGuru Says: I'm not sure an ‘iPhone Ultra' edition would do much to move the needle for Apple. Prices have already ballooned so much over the past five years and at a certain point, consumers will draw a line. Still, if this flagship iPhone contained a ‘killer' feature, then a certain percentage of smartphone enthusiasts would likely still jump on board.

Earlier this year, the European Union officially passed the amended Radio Equipment Directive, which will enforce a common charging port for all smartphones and tablets. This will force Apple to finally join Android phone makers in using USB-C as the common charging port across devices.

While this rule passed earlier this year, the EU had yet to set a firm date on when companies needed to start complying with the new rule. As of this week, the date is now set for December 2024. For most Android devices, nothing will change as the majority already use USB-C, but Apple will need to make more substantial changes to its lineup, as it still has many devices using the proprietary Lightning Port.

Apple has already confirmed that these new rules will force them to introduce a USB-C iPhone, but no exact date had been set. Apple could rip the bandaid off and switch to USB-C for this year's iPhone, but in all likelihood, the first USB-C iPhone should arrive in 2024. The deadline fits right in with Apple's usual Q3/Q4 iPhone launch window.

There is one way Apple could get around having to use USB-C – a portless iPhone that relies solely on wireless charging. This is something Apple has been exploring internally, but with many still using wired connections to charge their devices, the market might not be ready for such a change.

Earlier this year, the European Union announced legislation requiring smartphone and tablet makers to use a universal charging port to help reduce electronic waste. This isn't an issue for most Android device makers, as the vast majority have been using USB-C for years. When it comes to the iPhone though, Apple has remained adamant that it needs to continue using its own proprietary lightning port. Now, with the EU's new rules coming into place, we will finally be getting a USB-C iPhone.

While Apple introduced USB-C for the iPad Pro line-up years ago, it continued to use the slightly smaller lightning port for its iPhone devices. Now, following the EU's mandate, Apple will be replacing Lightning with USB-C, as confirmed by Apple marketing head, Greg Joswiak.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Joswiak confirmed that the company will “have to comply” with the law and introduce a USB-C iPhone, but the company doesn't seem to be pleased about this change. The new rules will come into effect in Autumn 2024, so that is when Apple will finally make the jump unless it chooses to bring USB-C in earlier for the 2023 iPhone, which doesn't seem likely.

Joswiak did not confirm if it would introduce the USB-C version of the iPhone globally, or just in the EU, where this law applies. Interestingly, as The Verge points out, a portless iPhone, an idea Apple has been toying with for a while, could skirt around these rules, but it would mean users would have to solely rely on wireless charging. While wireless charging has become more common in recent years, fast charging over a cable is still the preferred method for most.

At Apple’s recent hardware event, the tech giant announced a whole host of products, including the iPhone 14 Pro with its ‘Dynamic Island’ camera cut-out. For those not needing to be on the bleeding edge however, Apple also unveiled the standard iPhone 14, as well as a super-sized iPhone 14 Plus, offering small improvements over last year’s model.

The iPhone 14 comes in two sizes: the 6.1 inch standard-sized model, and a large 6.7 inch iPhone 14 Plus – replacing the Mini from the previous two generations. The introduction of a new screen size for the standard 14 is one of the biggest changes brought to the base model iPhones. That being said, there are some other hardware improvements coming to the 14.

Though neither as bright nor as smooth as the iPhone 14 Pro, the standard 14 and 14 Plus still offer a crisp and relatively bright OLED display – especially noticeable on the large 6.7inch Plus model.

The back cameras have been upgraded somewhat, bringing in much more light into the sensors for improved performance in darker scenes. Unlike the brand new 48MP sensor on the Pros, the standard 14s will remain at 12MP. Despite this, all iPhone 14 models share similar video improvements; adding a new super-stabilised ‘Action mode’ while quadrupling the resolution of its Cinematic mode to offer 4K filming.

Unlike the back cameras, the front-facing lens has been improved across the board, with the 14s and the Pros sharing a brand new TrueDepth front camera with autofocus and a larger aperture for 2x better low-light performance.

The 14 and 14 Plus will be recycling last year’s A15 Bionic SoC, though with an updated internal design for better thermal efficiency. Other miscellaneous improvements across the entire line-up include better battery life and car crash detection.

The iPhone 14 starts at £849 with the Plus going for £949. Both devices will be available for pre-order from the 9th of September, with the standard 14 shipping one week later on the16th – and the Plus not arriving until the 7th of October.

Apple unveiled a plethora of devices at their recent live event, including brand new iPhones as well as a rugged Apple Watch Ultra. For some, the most exciting announcement however came in the form of the 2nd-generation AirPods Pro, which is bringing with it significantly better active noise-cancelling; improved controls; personalised Spatial Audio and much more.

Available to preorder from tomorrow, the 9th of September (and shipping two weeks later from the 23rd), the 2nd-generation AirPods Pro brings with it a litany of hardware and software improvements.

The brand new H2 chip works in tandem with “a custom‑built driver and amplifier to deliver crisp, clear high notes and deep, rich bass in stunning definition” all the while offering increased efficiencies on all fronts.

What this means is that on top of improved sound quality, the new AirPods Pro will offer twice the level of noise cancellation when compared to the 1st-gen model while improving on battery life for 6 hours of uninterrupted listening.

Other upgrades include improved microphones for more natural-sounding speech when talking; adaptive transparency to let you hear the world around you while minimising the intensity of loud noises; improved controls letting you swipe on the AirPods to adjust sound volume; better tracking capabilities thanks to the inclusion of Apple’s U1 chip; as well as a built-in speaker for the case, meaning losing your AirPods should hopefully be quite difficult.

The 1st-generation AirPods Pro set the standard for truly wireless earbuds, and after three long years, it looks like the 2nd-generation Pros are once again ready to take the crown – for £249.

Apple’s recent iPhone 14 event featured much more than just the unveiling of the tech giant’s latest smartphone devices. The company also showed off its 2nd-generation AirPods Pro wireless earphones as well as three new Apple Watch devices – including a brand new rugged Ultra model.

As mentioned, Apple announced three new Apple Watch devices: An updated Apple Watch SE (featuring a bunch of new colours and a slightly speedier SoC); the latest 8th-generation Apple Watch (which brings with it “temperature sensing for deeper insights into women’s health. Crash Detection to get help in an emergency. Sleep stages to better understand your sleep. And new ways to train in the enhanced Workout app”), and last but certainly not least, the brand new Apple Watch Ultra.

Pitched as an athletics-focused device, the Apple Watch Ultra features a rugged design utilising a large 49mm titanium case and a flat sapphire crystal screen for maximum damage resistance. Speaking of the screen, it is Apple’s “biggest and brightest Apple Watch display ever” going all the way up to 2000nits for easy outdoor visibility no matter the weather.

Additionally, the watch’s digital crown has grown in size and the side button has been pushed further out from the chassis “making them easier to use while you’re wearing gloves”. Apple has also added a second side button to the Watch Ultra which can be programmed however you wish for quick access to your most-used functions.

That is not all however, as the Watch Ultra also sees a major boost to its elemental resistance, with 100m of water resistance, temperature resistance “tested to MIL-STD 810H” and IP6X dust resistance.

With precision dual-frequency GPS antennae; a gauge for real-time measurements of underwater depth down to 40 metres; 36 hours of battery life (up to 60 with low-power mode) and an 86 decibel siren which can be heard up to 180 metres away, you should be able to tackle any issue which comes your way.

All of these new and improved features come at quite a cost – £849 to be precise, and so while it certainly will not be the watch for everyone, for some, the Apple Watch Ultra is exactly what they have been waiting for, The Apple Watch Ultra is available to pre-order right now, with the device shipping from the 23rd of September.

For months we have heard various leaks and rumours surrounding Apple’s iPhone 14/Pro, but the Cupertino-based company has now officially announced their latest and greatest generation of iPhones. While the 14 serves as a modest upgrade over last year’s model, the iPhone 14 Pro comes with a whole host of improvements and changes, including what Apple is calling ‘Dynamic Island’.

Available in both 6.1 inch and 6.7 inch variants, the iPhone 14 Pro | Pro Max share a similar design to last year’s iPhone 13 Pros though with much-improved hardware across the board. The most notable visual change can be seen on the front, where the notch has been replaced by what Apple is calling ‘Dynamic Island’.

This horizontal pill-shaped camera cut-out comes with quite a few nifty software features, utilising the phone’s OLED panel to morph the cut-out into different shapes and sizes, “consolidating your notifications, alerts and activities into one interactive place.”

The display itself has seen some upgrades too, with the maximum brightness of the 120hz panel being doubled to 2000 nits at its peak. Despite this, the screen is more energy efficient than ever, allowing for the 14 Pro to include an always-on display – a long-requested feature for the iPhone.

Selfies are also getting a major boost in performance, with a new front-facing camera which features autofocus as well as a larger aperture for better depth sensing and improved low-light performance.

Going to the back of the phone, the 14 Pro features a brand new 48MP main camera sensor, offering up to 4x the resolution of last year’s model. This also allows for the main sensor to serve as a 2x optical zoom lens (on top of the separate 0.5x ultrawide and 3x telephoto lenses). The new sensors are also capable of extracting more light from subjects, with the ultrawide seeing a 3x improvement in low-light conditions (and a 2x improvement to the main and telephoto cameras).

Unlike the regular 14, the Pros will also come with an upgraded SoC, the Apple A16 Bionic chip – meaning that despite the many new features, your phone should perform buttery smooth while maintaining an all-day battery life.

The iPhone 14 Pro / Pro Max are quite a big leap in all aspects when compared to last year’s model. Unfortunately, this does come with an added cost, with the 14 Pro starting at £1,099 and the Pro Max jumping up to £1,199. The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will be available to pre-order from 1PM on the 9th of September, and will begin to ship to users from the 16th.

Sony has been talking about increasing the presence of PlayStation games on mobile for a while now. Ahead of this renewed push into mobile gaming, Sony has announced the first officially licensed PlayStation gamepad for smartphones.

The Backbone One PlayStation Edition is the first officially licensed PlayStation controller for iPhone. The controller itself is inspired by the PS5's DualSense controller, offering a similar two-tone black and white design. You also get traditional Square, Cross, Triangle and Circle buttons, but the thumbsticks are closer to the ones found on Joy-Cons to make it more comfortable for mobile.

The controller plugs into the iPhone and is powered by the phone, so you don't need to charge it alongside your phone and other accessories. The controller can be used with any app that supports gamepads on iOS, so you can use it for mobile games like PUBG Mobile or Call of Duty Mobile, or you can use it to play streamed games to your phone through various cloud services or the PS4 and PS5's Remote Play feature.

Of course, having the controller also means you can access a number of streaming services through the Backbone app. Now, the app will also have a dedicated PlayStation section, containing new releases and news updates on PlayStation titles.

The Backbone One PlayStation Edition will be launching in many countries across the world this year, priced at $99.99.

Apple's latest WWDC featured many announcements, but most importantly, it set the foundations for what's to come. Apple hasn't announced its full array of new-generation Macs and other devices just yet, but according to a new report, Apple has a ton coming in the second half of this year, including new accessories like the AirPods, new Smart Home devices like the Home Pod, as well as new Macs, iPhones and iPads.

According to Bloomberg, Apple will launch a massive set of devices between Fall 2022 and H1 2023. That includes four iPhone 14 models, three new versions of the Apple Watch, various M2/M3-based Macs, Apple's first mixed-reality headset, more iPads, revised AirPods Pro earbuds, an improved Apple TV and a new HomePod.

The new features coming with iOS 16 suggest the iPhone 14 devices will feature an always-on display, a setting to prevent sensitive data from showing on the lock screen, and the ability to show widgets while the screen is at a low brightness and frame rate. The pro variants will have better cameras, thinner bezels, the new A16 chip, and a redesigned notch with a pill-shaped cut-out and a hole punch for the selfie camera. The “lower-end” models will get the same A15 as the iPhone 13. On the iPad front, Apple is reportedly planning a new A14-powered iPad with 5G support, as well as new iPad Pro models powered by the newly launched M2 processor. There may also be a giant 15-inch iPad Pro on the way in the next year or two.

We've already seen the Apple M2 processor inside the latest MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro. However, the SoC will also soon power new Mac Mini devices, and an M2 Pro or M2 Max should also be on the way to power larger, 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros. Finally, an M2 Ultra and M2 Extreme should also be on the way inside of a new Mac Pro. An M3 chip is also reportedly in the works and should debut with the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air laptops in 2023. In addition, we may see Apple releasing a 12-inch laptop, currently in early development.

Finally, we should be getting a new generation of Apple Watch models in 2023, as well as a new Apple TV with more memory and a more powerful processor and a new HomePod with an upgraded chip and support for higher quality audio.

The European Union has been looking to set a universal charging port standard for a while now. Most Android smartphones nowadays use USB-C, as do many laptops and other devices. Now, new EU rules will ensure that USB-C becomes the common charging port for all smartphones and tablets sold in Europe by 2024.

The provisional agreement on the amended Radio Equipment Directive establishes a single charging solution for certain electronic devices. By ensuring everyone is using USB-C, the EU says products will be more sustainable and electronic waste will be reduced. It will also cut down on the headache of needing multiple different cables for different devices around the house.

As noted previously, most Android devices, as well as many other laptops and tablets, do use USB-C nowadays, so this will have the biggest impact on Apple. While Apple has shipped the iPad Pro with USB-C since 2018, the iPhone continues to use the company's own proprietary Lightning port. This new law would force Apple to put USB-C on the iPhone for the first time, starting in 2024, unless the company can work something out with the EU.

The full range of devices that will have to use USB-C in the EU includes: Mobile phones, tablets, e-readers, earbuds, digital cameras, headphones and headsets, handheld videogame consoles and portable speakers that are rechargeable via a wired cable. Laptops will have to begin using USB-C for charging within 40 months of the rules becoming active.

For years, the consumer tech industry has been trying to standardise the use of USB Type-C for all electronics from external harddrives to display ports to mobile phone chargers. Most of the world's tech has switched over to USB-C except for Apple’s iPhones and their peripherals. After almost a decade, the iPhone may finally be getting USB-C.

This report comes from Apple Analyst and insider Ming-Chi Kuo who – with an accuracy score of 72.5% across over 100 leaks – has historically offered a reliable insight into the inner workings of Apple.

Kuo recently claimed that the 2023 iPhones will for the first time ever adopt a USB-C port instead of the proprietary Lighting connector which has been in use on all iPhones since 2012. With the rest of the industry having switched to USB-C long ago, Apple remained the sole mobile phone developer to stick with older and proprietary technology.

Perhaps even more exciting than this however is the fact that according to Kuo, the iPhone isn’t the only Apple device set to ditch Lightning. All of Apple’s current accessories which use such a port will reportedly be switching to the new standard of USB-C. Such devices and accessories include the likes of Apple’s Airpods; Magsafe Battery Pack; Magic Keyboard; Magic Mouse; and Magic Trackpad – to name some of the most common.

Though it is but a small frustration, the need to carry multiple cables to accommodate for Apple’s products has always been a frustration nonetheless. If what Kuo is claiming ends up being true, then we may soon bear witness to the end of an era for the iPhone, and a rebirth into a new age of USB-C.

Since the rise of the iPhone and iPad, Apple has slowly broken away from the iPod line-up. The iPod Classic was discontinued in 2014, followed by the iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle in 2017. Now in 2022, we are saying goodbye to the iPod Touch.

In an announcement this week, Apple confirmed that the iPod Touch is being discontinued. Apple last updated the iPod Touch back in 2015, but has only focused on its core mobile products since – the iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. Given that the iPod hasn't been high on Apple's list of priorities over the last decade, news of the iPod Touch being discontinued isn't too surprising.

While this may be expected news, it is still significant. Apple launched the iPod over 20 years ago, and for many years, it was the company's most popular product line. The rise of the iPod also ushered in the current age of digital music, with iTunes swiftly replacing CDs over the 2000s.

The iPod Touch is still in stock for now, so if you want to preserve a piece of history, or just really want an iPod Touch for some reason, you should still be able to get hold of one. However, once current supplies sell out, there will be no more units made. Perhaps we'll see an anniversary edition iPod released as a nostalgia cash-in at some point far in the future, but for now, the iPod is well and truly dead.

KitGuru Says: Due to the popularity of the iPhone and the range of options now available at different price points, there hasn't really been a place for the iPod Touch in the market for quite some time. If I had to guess, the iPhone 6's success in 2016 was likely the final nail in the coffin. Did many of you own an iPod back in the day?

Fortnite has officially been unavailable on iPhones and iPads since the 2020 lawsuit between Epic Games and Apple. Epic has been fighting to get the game back onto iOS, but has been unsuccessful in persuading Apple to change its mind. Fortunately, there are other methods of getting Fortnite running on an iPhone, with Microsoft's xCloud service being one of them.

Microsoft did support Epic's fight against Apple and Xbox executives did testify during the trial. Now, Microsoft has helped Epic Games get Fortnite back on iOS through streaming.

As of today, Fortnite is coming to Xbox Cloud Gaming, otherwise known as xCloud. This will allow anyone with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription to stream a touch-friendly and controller-friendly version of the game to an iPhone or iPad.

Catherine Gluckstein, Vice President and Head of Product at Xbox Cloud Gaming, noted that this is “an important step” for the service, which now has a major free-to-play title for its cloud gaming service. Epic Games CEO, Tim Sweeney, was also pleased to make the announcement, pointing out the company's ability to avoid the 30% “Apple tax” by teaming up with Microsoft. Of course, it is also worth noting that Fortnite is also available on GeForce Now, so you could technically stream the game to an iPhone or an iPad already, although the GeForce Now version doesn't support touch controls.

KitGuru Says: Apple has not commented on the situation yet, but it will be interesting to see if the company will respond.

Just recently, Apple reportedly slashed production for new iPhone SE units by 20% following a disappointing launch. Now, iPhone chip maker, TSMC, has commented on the smartphone industry as a whole, predicting weakening demand.

TSMC is one of the biggest semiconductors in the world, providing chips for major companies across the tech industry, from smartphones to PC components like CPUs and GPUs. According to the company's Chairman, Mark Liu, smartphone demand is falling and there is concern that rising production costs will also impact demand due to higher prices.

As reported by Nikkei, Liu is quoted as saying: “Everyone in the industry is worried about rising costs across the overall supply chain. The semiconductor industry already directly experienced that cost increase”. The report adds that some of that cost increase “could eventually be passed on to consumers”, which would also impact demand due to higher prices.

Anyone trying to buy a graphics card in the last 18 months has already experienced this. Prices are finally settling, but many graphics cards are still sold well above MSRP. The smartphone market held up quite well during the chip shortage, with some companies, like Apple, avoiding its effects entirely and maintaining record sales.

KitGuru Says: The smartphone market has been pretty robust over the years, in part due to the industry's ability to push users to upgrade regularly. It sounds like that is beginning to slow down, with less interest in regularly upgrading. If prices go up, then people may end up holding onto their older devices for even longer periods.

Apple dropped Touch ID from the iPhone in 2017 and 2018, choosing to go all-in on Face ID for biometric security. Still, Touch ID hasn't gone away completely, and is still in use on a few products. For a while now, we've been expecting Touch ID to return to the iPhone with an under-display sensor, but it might take another couple of years.

While Android phone makers have been using under-display sensors for years now, Apple has avoided adopting the technology for the iPhone. Analysts have been predicting that Apple will eventually adopt this technology and bring back Touch ID in a future iPhone generation, but it is unlikely to happen this year, according to updated reports.

Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, has updated his Apple predictions today. This week, Kuo cut his sales forecast for the newly released iPhone SE, and today, Kuo is revising his prediction for the return of Touch ID – indicating that it won't be coming in 2023 or 2024. Instead, Apple will continue to improve Face ID. Just recently, Apple rolled out the ability to use Face ID while wearing a mask.

Apple is currently rumoured to rollout a new iPhone design this year, possibly with the Face ID module hidden under the display and thus removing the notch.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: If this is accurate, then perhaps Apple has dropped plans to bring back Touch ID entirely. At this point, Face ID has proven itself to be very reliable, which greatly lessens the need for a new fingerprint sensor.

Apple only just launched the new iPhone SE, but it appears the first few weeks of sales have not been encouraging. According to supply chain sources, Apple has cut iPhone SE production by 20 percent due to low demand.

According to sources speaking with Nikkei, Apple has cut production for the iPhone SE by 20 percent, a change that will take effect starting next quarter. Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, also recently revised their sales forecast for the iPhone SE from 25 to 30 million units to 15 to 20 million units, so the lack of demand appears to have come as a surprise.

The reports don't point out any supply chain issues or component shortages, which has been a key reason for low production of other products in recent years. Games consoles and PC components, such as graphics cards, have been hit the hardest by shortages, while Apple has mostly managed to maintain supply.

Apple is also cutting production for AirPods, with plans to produce 10 million fewer units this year than initially planned.

KitGuru Says: With the iPhone 13 Mini being available, the iPhone SE is a less attractive option than it was in previous generations. With that in mind, I do wonder if we'll see the iPhone SE return in the future, or if Apple will drop it entirely in favour of the iPhone Mini.
