Blizzard’s recent reveal of Diablo Immortal was an unmitigated disaster, with many criticising the publisher for being out of touch with its fans. However, that hasn’t stopped co-founder Allen Adham from revealing that Blizzard has ‘some of its best developers' working on mobile games across its other franchises.

“Many of us over the last few years have shifted from playing primarily desktop to playing many hours on mobile, and we have many of our best developers now working on new mobile titles across all of our IPs,” Adham said, dropping the bombshell at a post-BlizzCon press conference.

“Some of them are with external partners like Diablo Immortal. Many of them are being developed internally only, and we'll have information to share on those in the future. I will say also that we have more new products in development today at Blizzard than we've ever had in our history, and our future is very bright.”

As it stands, the reveal of Diablo Immortal sits in the top three most disliked videos on YouTube. That is even after the original video was pulled and reuploaded to try and mask some of the backlash. Blizzard justifies its reveal as a means to penetrate the lucrative mobile gaming market and reach “a much broader audience around the world,” however many criticise the publisher for leaving its long-term PC fans feeling overlooked.

We will undoubtedly see Warcraft, Overwatch and Starcraft worm their way onto mobile eventually. However, Adham wants to make sure that the core audience isn't forgotten along the way:  “For our diehard PC fans, we will say though, we still have multiple Diablo teams working on multiple unannounced Diablo projects. So we haven't forgotten about them.”

Of course, Blizzard is staying tight-lipped on what other mobile games it has in the works. Either way though, it seems like Diablo Immortal is just the beginning and we'll be seeing mobile spin-offs across the board in due time.

KitGuru Says: The gaming industry is a business and Activision Blizzard is always looking at ways to rake in more revenue. With that in mind, it's not surprising that Blizzard is looking into cracking the mobile market, but announcing all of this at Blizzcon was a sure-fire way to set yourself up for failure. How do you feel about Blizzard moving more into the mobile space? Do you think there are certain series that will work well on a smartphone? Or should the focus remain on PC?

Last year Nintendo reorganized its hardware development teams and now has one big group that conducts R&D operations for both home and portable consoles. While the move greatly strengthens the company’s hardware development organization, the company thinks that eventually it could also unify mobile and home console games, at least to a certain degree.

“What I can say is, certainly, within Nintendo the fact that our development environment for our home console is different from the development environment for our portable system is certainly an area of stress or challenge for the development teams,” said Shigeru Miyamoto, the general manager of Nintendo entertainment analysis and development, in an interview with Kotaku. “So as we move forward, we're going to look at what we can do to unify the two development environments.”

Technically speaking, it is not really hard to play a console game using a portable game console. For example, Sony’s PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita support remote play technology that allows to play PS4 games on a PS Vita over the Internet. However, such approach may not be ideal from many standpoints. What Nintendo is looking at are games that are developed to run on both portable and non-portable systems.

“Certainly from a development standpoint there is some challenge to it, because if you have two devices that have different specs and you're being told to design in a way that the game runs on both devices, then that can be challenging for the developer – but if you have a more unified development environment and you're able to make one game that runs on both systems instead of having to make a game for each system, that's an area of opportunity for us,” said Mr. Miyamoto.

Unified games should give a boost to mobile game consoles that are losing market share to mobile gadgets. Titles developed for non-portable consoles are traditionally better than games designed for smartphones and tablets. Moreover, one popular game for home consoles may boost adoption of portable consoles, which is good for Nintendo in general

KitGuru Says: While unifying games for different platforms should bring a lot of benefits to Nintendo, the unification itself will not make its platforms more competitive. In a bid to truly take advantage of games that can run on different platforms, Nintendo will have to ensure that its hardware and software is actually as good as their rivals from other companies.

Research firm Nielsen have just issued a new report showing that Gaming is the most popular category for mobile application downloads. An interesting statistic shows that 93% of application downloaders are willing to pay for a game.

They added “In contrast, only 76 percent of downloaders are willing to pay for news apps.” Many people already know that there are free applications for RSS feeds, so dedicated applications can sometimes take a back seat. They added “The average mobile gamer plays an average of 7.8 hours a month. Those with iPhones tend to play around 14.7 hours each month while those with Android smartphones play around 9.3 hours per month.”

Owners of BlackBerry handsets are more likely to play games that come preinstalled whereas iPhones, Windows Phone 7 and Android handset owners are more likely to download new titles to enjoy.

In the last month, 64% of people have downloaded a gaming application, 60% have downloaded a weather related program and 56% have downloaded a social networking application. 11% of users are interested in Educational applications.

Kitguru says: Smartphone gaming is one of the largest gaming markets.
