After much speculation, last week ASRock essentially confirmed its plans to enter the graphics card market with a not so cryptic teaser video. Now today, the company has officially announced its Phantom Gaming series of graphics cards, focussing on the Radeon RX 500 series.

The RX 580 and RX 570 Phantom Gaming cards are dual-slot GPUs with a dual-fan after market cooler on top. Meanwhile, ASRock will also be launching mini-ITX versions of the Phantom Gaming design for the RX 560 and RX 550.

No final pricing details have been announced, but the ASRock website does warn that these GPUs may not be sold worldwide, so the launch may be limited to just a few countries.

KitGuru Says: So it's official, the GPU market has another player in its ranks. What do you guys think of ASRock's first graphics card attempt?

It seems that all of the recent RX 500 series leaks are finally coming to a head as this week, AMD's RX-500 series announcement presentation leaked onto the web, giving us a look at the all-new reference design and some performance numbers.

For starters, AMD is moving away from the usual ‘blower style' reference cooler and is replacing it with a much more efficient dual-fan design. The new cooler is more akin to what you would expect to see from an add-in board partner, so it's nice to see AMD stepping things up in this regard. As we can see from the image above, AMD is preparing four cards for release soon, the RX 580, 570, 560 and 550.

As with most new GPU presentations, some performance numbers are given. These benchmarks are run by AMD, so it will be best to wait for third-party reviewers and GPU buyers for a wider spread of comparisons and benchmarks. Still, the results seem interesting, though AMD is primarily comparing the RX 580 to the RX 380, cutting out the 400-series entirely from its comparisons. The leak comes from Chinese site Jisakutech (via Videocardz), the images aren't the best quality- some of the graphs are harder to make out than others. However, from what we can see, AMD is pitching this as more of an upgrade to the R9 380x, skipping over any RX 480 comparisons.

The presentation also shows that AMD are targeting the RX 580 at those looking to break into 1440p gaming, without spending a fortune.

KitGuru Says: It seems that the RX 500 series announcement will be happening shortly. Are any of you currently holding off on upgrading? It might be worth waiting for new cards, especially if you are looking at buying an RX 400-series GPU.

AMD's next batch of graphics cards are on the way and as we have previously heard, they are set to be based on refreshed Polaris chips. We already knew that AMD had found a way to increase the performance per watt of Polaris towards the latter half of 2016 and now with the RX 500 series, we are likely going to get to see Polaris 12 and Polaris 20.

The current rumour is that AMD is planning on releasing its RX 500 series towards the middle of April. Now, a report from wccftech seems to name the new Polaris revisions we can expect to see, listing off Polaris 20 XTX for the RX 580, Polaris 20 for the RX 560 and Polaris 12 for a lower end RX 550.

According to the report, the top-end RX 580 will feature 2304 stream processors 144 TMUs and 32 ROPs. Aside from that, there is said to be a 1340 MHz boost to bump overall compute performance to 6.17 TFLOPS. We'll see 8GB of GDDR5 memory return, alongside the $199 price tag that made the RX 480 so popular. The RX 570 is based on a cut down version of this same chip, so it will feature 2048 stream processors instead, along with a lower 1244MHz boost clock.

This pattern will continue for the rest of the Polaris lineup. However, we have yet to hear much in regards to performance per watt or TDP, which judging by previous reports will be a focus point for AMD with this refresh.

KitGuru Says: The RX 500 series might not be the most exciting release of the year but it does pave the way for the RX Vega, which is set to boost AMD's position in the high-end GPU market. That said, if you are looking at getting an RX 400-series GPU at the moment, perhaps hold off a few weeks as it seems the 500-series is just around the corner and will offer a few benefits.

Over the last couple of weeks, we have been hearing increasing rumours surrounding AMD's plans for the RX 500 series. Right now, the current rumour is that these new GPUs will launch in April as a Polaris refresh and now, that scenario looks very likely as this week, AMD added driver support for the RX 580, RX 570 and RX560.

Signs of the RX 500 series being a Polaris refresh first appeared last year, when a report claimed AMD had figured out a way to increase the performance per watt of the architecture. Following that, references to Polaris XT2 and Polaris 12 were spotted in drivers.

Now, in the latest Crimson Relive 17.3.2 Beta driver, which brings optimisations for Mass Effect Andromeda, there is added support for the RX 580, RX 570 and RX560 GPUs, indicating that these cards are on the way, as noted by previous reports. Aside from that, we can see from the device IDs that the RX 580 and 570 belong to the same device tree as the RX 480 and 470. The same can be said for the RX 460/560, essentially confirming the Polaris refresh.

KitGuru Says: Hopefully the launch of AMD's RX 500 series lineup will be followed closely by the RX Vega. After all, it has been quite some time since AMD last released a high-end GPU.

Update: A couple of weeks ago, we first began hearing rumours of an RX 500 series coming in April. At the time, the source claimed that the RX 580 and RX 570 would be arriving in the first week of April, with the lower end RX 560 and RX 550 arriving a week later. This now appears to have changed, with the report now claiming that the RX 500 series will launch closer to the 18th of April mark.

We still don't have much solid information pointing towards this rumour being true and with the launch coming so soon, some more concrete evidence should have leaked out by now. Still, assuming this is all still accurate, then it is likely that the RX 500 series will be a Polaris refresh, as explained in the original story below.

Original Story: Back in October, we first heard whispers that AMD had managed to improve on its Polaris architecture further, leading to higher performance per watt across the board. Since then, we have seen references to Polaris 10 XT2 and Polaris 12 in drivers and now this week, new reports are claiming that the RX 500 series will be a Polaris refresh as rumoured, with a rollout apparently set for April.

According to a report from Heise.de, AMD may be announcing the RX 580 and RX 570 on the 4th of April with an RX 560 and RX 550 apparently set to appear a week later on the 11th of April. April does seem a bit too soon for such a sudden GPU launch but if this is a Polaris refresh, then it is likely AMD can get to the rollout quicker than with brand new architecture.

These will once again be mid-range GPUs, with the RX 580, 570 and 560 said to be improved revisions of the RX 480, 470 and 460. Perhaps increased performance per watt will play a factor but there may also be clock speed bumps.

This will tide AMD over until the launch of the recently announced RX Vega, which is slated to release in the first half of this year, meaning we should have it in our hands before the end of June.

KitGuru Says: This RX 500 series information is all based on rumour for the time being so the rollout may not happen exactly as claimed here. However, given past reports of revised Polaris chips, alongside early driver references, the potential for the RX 500 series being a Polaris refresh seems fairly high. Are any of you currently waiting on new GPUs before upgrading?
