Prior to the success of the Nintendo Switch, there was a lot of concern about Nintendo's future in the gaming business, as the Wii U struggled to gain any momentum in the market. At that time, Nintendo turned to mobile gaming to boost its revenues to great success. Now, Nintendo is bolstering its partnership with DeNA further.

Nintendo partnered with DeNA for its very first mobile games, including the likes of Super Mario Run, Fire Emblem Heroes, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp and more. Now, Nintendo is forming a new co-owned company with DeNA for future mobile projects.

“Based on the expertise accumulated over the seven plus years and the experience of co-developing multiple services based on Nintendo Account, Nintendo and DeNA will advance their partnership and establish a joint venture company”.

The goal of this partnership will be to further strengthen Nintendo's digital business. The new company will also research and develop new membership services for various devices.

KitGuru Says: Nintendo's partnership with DeNA has been a fruitful one, so it is no surprise to see them partnering further.

A couple of years back as Wii U sales continued to struggle, Nintendo turned to mobile gaming to gain a quick revenue boost. This new mobile game initiative kicked off with Super Mario Run for iOS and Android. However, unlike other games, Super Mario Run landed with a $10 price tag, rather than choosing the free to play option. So how much has this game made for Nintendo so far?

According to the latest stats from Sensor Tower, Super Mario Run has managed to earn Nintendo an impressive $60 million worldwide since its release on iOS in December 2016. The Android version was released six months later, providing an additional path for revenue.

super-mario-run-iphone-ipad-e1481911469131.jpg

Super Mario Run did make most of its money on the iOS App Store, which accounts for 77 percent of the game's total revenue. In terms of player base, the majority are from the US, which accounts for 43 percent of players. Japan accounts for roughly 17 percent, and the rest is divided up between other territories.

Despite being Nintendo's most famous character, Super Mario Run isn't Nintendo's highest grossing game on mobile. Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp and Fire Emblem Heroes both ended up making more in the long run, despite releasing much later. Either way though, this is an impressive feat for Nintendo, especially as Super Mario is pitched as a full game on mobile, with no additional microtransactions under the hood.

KitGuru Says: The profit margin on this game must be huge, and I am sure Nintendo is very happy with its performance. Did you play Super Mario Run?

Back in December, Nintendo topped the iOS charts with the launch of Super Mario Run, the company's first proper mobile game based on its most famous franchise. At the time, Super Mario Run was exclusive to iOS but that will be changing soon, with Android users able to get their hands on the game in just a few days time.

That three-month gap is quite large but with Super Mario Run still doing well on iOS, it should still see a high level of success when it hits Android. The game will be launching on Android on the 23rd of March but you can already register interest at the Google Play Store listing

Super Mario Run is free to download initially but after clearing the first three stages, you will need to cough up $9.99/£7.99 for access to the rest of the game, which is continuously updated with new events and trials to complete, though all based on the same levels that the game launched with.

Over 40 million people have downloaded the game on iOS already, though we don't know how many of those people went on to buy the full version. Super Mario Run is a familiar title, though you don't get to control Mario's movement directly, instead he will run at a preset speed and your job is to time jumps correctly to get through the levels and beat coin challenges.

KitGuru Says: Super Mario Run is a fun little game though due to its always online DRM, I rarely get the chance to play it while travelling. Are any of you planning on trying out Super Mario Run when it hits Android this week?

Obviously, you can't actually download or buy Super Mario Run for Android just yet but you can ‘pre-register' so that you get a notification once the app does become available in the store. Super Mario Run is free to download initially but after clearing the first three stages, you will need to cough up $9.99 for access to the rest of the game.

KitGuru Says: Unfortunately due to Super Mario Run's always online DRM, I haven't had a chance to play much of it just yet. The key times I play games on my phone are when I'm travelling and away from stable internet and this form of DRM really defeats that purpose. Have any of you guys tried Super Mario Run yet? Will you be picking it up when it comes to Android?

Super Mario Run might have annoyed a lot of people by restricting the majority of its content behind a paywall, but that doesn't mean it hasn't been popular. In fact it's the fastest growing app ever, even beating out the likes of Pokémon Go. In the four days following its release, more than 40 million people have downloaded it.

Nintendo has been on a roll with mobile apps, which is pretty impressive considering 2016 saw it enter the market for the first time. Earlier in the year the licensed Pokémon Go broke all sorts of records on mobile and now Nintendo has done it itself with Super Mario Run.

Reviews for the game haven't been super strong, but many of the negative ones don't like the pay-wall that stands between them and the rest of the game. However restricting some parts of the game but giving users a taste with the free content, meant that Super Mario Run could feature in the free-listings for games, which has no doubt contributed to its success.

A lot of people have been happy to pay too, as Nintendo reports that not only has the game been downloaded by 40 million people, but that Super Mario Run is also one of the highest earning games in 100 of the 140 markets it's currently available in.

And this is even without an official Android version.

KitGuru Says: 10s of millions of dollars for a game that must have been far, far cheaper to make than your average Mario game. Nintendo will no doubt take this on board when it comes to future development plans.

Nintendo officially brought Super Mario to mobile last night with the launch of Super Mario Run on iOS and while we have known that the game will cost somewhere in the neighbourhood of $10 for quite some time, it looks like some investors only figured that out today, as shares in Nintendo dropped by around 5 percent just after the launch.

This means that Nintendo's overall value has dropped by around $1.1 billion over night, despite the fact that Super Mario Run is actually selling quite well and is expected to bring in $60 million this month.

Right now, we don't know exactly why investors appear to have reacted negatively to Super Mario Run but it is heavily speculated that it is down to the $9.99/£7.99 price tag, which means the game may see less downloads compared to a free to play game like Pokemon Go. DeNA, the company Nintendo has partnered with for its mobile games has also seen a deep in shares today.

KitGuru Says: When it comes to Nintendo, investors seem to act fairly unpredictably. There was a spike with Pokemon Go, followed by a dip, then there was a dip following the Switch console announcement despite the buzz surrounding it and now the same thing has happened with Super Mario Run despite sales predictions.

Unity held its annual Unite conference yesterday, where it launched the new 5.5 game engine and a new Timeline feature for the editor. However the big news was some of the partnerships it has made recently, including ones with Nintendo, Facebook and Google, each of which will be using the popular engine for upcoming games and projects.

Facebook may not be your typical developer, even if its platform has hosted some of the world's most popular casual games in recent years. It was at the Unite conference though that it announced GameRoom, a game development platform that will fully support Unity with the 5.6 update next year. It will make it ultra easy to export games to Facebook, or to the GameRoom Windows app.

It's another case of Facebook trying to keep you on Facebook, whether that's online or off.

Editing VR, while in VR, is another facet that Unity is always improving

The Nintendo partnership is a bold move by Unity too. The Japanese console maker announced that Super Mario Run, the company's first ever mobile game, was built using Unity. We also learned that the Nintendo Switch will support the Unity engine at launch, suggesting that getting games on to the new console could be much easier for indie developers. That could also make it easier for existing games to be ported to Switch when it debuts.

Joining these two industry giants in their support of Unity, was Google. It will utilise Unity for much of its DayDream VR platform, which will help flesh out the upcoming system with content when it debuts. Like Facebook though, full support will have to wait until the 5.6 update next year – but considering DayDream isn't exactly ready yet, that shouldn't be a problem.

KitGuru Says: Considering how much cheaper it is to license some of the world's most powerful game engines, Unity needs all the help it can get to stay competitive in that space. These partnerships will go a long way to aiding that.

During Apple's iPhone announcement event on Tuesday evening, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto took the stage to announce Super Mario Run, the first Mario game for smartphones, coming first to iOS this year. It seems that this was a smart move, as now Nintendo's stock has jumped by almost 30 percent, similarly to what happened after Pokemon Go launched.

As news of Super Mario launching on smartphones spread across the world, Nintendo's shares rose from $28 each to $36 each. As Gamesindustry.biz points out, this is near the same peak Nintendo saw after Pokemon Go launched.

s-aolcdn-com

While Nintendo's shares did eventually dip back down after Pokemon Go, this was simply because investors weren't aware that Nintendo did not create the game and won't be making the lionshare of the profits. However, Super Mario Run is an actual Nintendo product and will likely help boost Nintendo's own finances, so we probably won't see such a sharp dip this time.

Super Mario Run launches on iOS in December as a one-time purchase title, rather than free to play. That said, you will be able to play some of it for free, before needing to unlock the rest. The game will be launching on Android a little later, likely in early 2017.

KitGuru Says: Following the Wii U, confidence in Nintendo took a hit but with moves like this, they seem to be winning people over once again. Do you guys think bringing Super Mario to smartphones is a good move?
