If you are currently putting together a Ryzen 7 1800x or 1700x build and are planning your cooling solution based on current reported temperatures from reviews, then you may want to read this before spending a fortune on cooling or chasing down temperature issues. It seems that AMD has incorporated a +20°C temperature offset with these two CPUs and unfortunately didn't make that very clear to reviewers. As a result, you may be seeing very inaccurate readings.

This +20°C temperature offset means that most software will be displaying the offset reading, rather than the actual junction temperature. As a result, AMD is advising that users subtract 20°C from their reported Ryzen 7 1800x and 1700x values to get an accurate reading on the junction temperature.

The reason for this offset in temperature is due to Ryzen's use of a tCTL sensor which is derived from the junction (Tj) temperature—the interface point between the die and heatspreader. It is offset on certain models to ensure all Ryzen 7 CPUs have the same maximum tCTL value and a consistent fan control policy across all three processors.

We have since updated both our Ryzen 7 1800x and 1700x reviews with this information underneath the temperature graphs. Interestingly enough, AMD chose to fix this in Ryzen 7 1700, so those of you buying that CPU will not need to take this offset into account.

According to AMD's statement on the matter, the company is hoping that software will eventually be updated to recognise the temperature offset and start displaying the actual junction temperature.

KitGuru Says: This really seems like the sort of thing that should have been in the reviewer's guide to avoid confusion before launch. If you are planning a Ryzen build right now, make sure you take this offset into account when planning on your cooling solution etc.

Last year, when Apple launched the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, the company had a bit of a PR nightmare when ‘bendgate' began making headlines. Now this year, Apple faces a new problem, which is currently being dubbed ‘chipgate'. To put it simply, the A9 processor inside of the new iPhone could be made by one of two companies and performance differs quite dramatically depending on which one you get.

The A9 chips are being manufactured by TSMC and Samsung. Samsung's version uses the 14nm process, while TSMC's uses the 16nm process, which has a direct impact on temperatures and battery performance.

Geekbench
A Reddit posters benchmark findings. TSMC on the left, Samsung on the right.

Right now, tests show that the Samsung A9 chip could have up to 20% worse battery life than TSMC's. The latter company's chip also runs cooler under load. Tech YouTubers, Austin Evans and Jonathan Morrison have released videos of their own findings on the topic, while a Reddit poster has also posted Geekbench battery rest benchmarks to show how big the difference between the two chips can be.

This news is all quite new so Apple has yet to comment on or acknowledge. The issue seems to be that not all iPhone 6s models are built the same, so those looking to buy face a lottery of sorts as there is no way to tell which chip you are going to get ahead of time.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: The TSMC iPhone runs significantly cooler and adds on almost an extra two hours in battery tests. However, it should be pointed out that benchmarks aren't always indicative of every day use. It will be interesting to see if and how Apple responds to this.

Today we are going to take a look at the latest liquid CPU cooler from Corsair, the Hydro H105. Corsair are one of the longest established players in the liquid CPU cooling market and are presently the most popular brand. This can be attributed to their wide range of products and impressive track record.

Corsair have been steadily expanding their range of liquid CPU coolers over the last few years, and have a significantly larger portfolio than any other manufacturer. With so much competition in the ‘all in one' liquid cooling market they do need to actively refresh their range to stay ahead.

IMG_5347
The Hydro H105 differentiates itself from the competition as it has a thicker radiator, which should theoretically improve performance over a standard thickness model. The radiator on the Hydro H100i model for instance is 27mm thick, versus 38mm on the new Hydro H105.

Noctua are still one of the best respected manufacturers in the air-cooling market and have one of the most diverse ranges of high quality products available on the market. We haven't yet seen an all-in-one liquid cooler from Noctua and it seems unlikely in the near future. They seem to be concentrating on what they do best, providing some of the best performing air coolers on the market.

Today we are going to look at the latest all-in-one CPU water cooler from Cooler Master, the Eisberg Prestige 240L which competes with the latest models from the likes of Corsair and NZXT. The Eisberg range is targeted specifically at enthusiasts and boasts a number of exciting features that differentiate it from the competition.

Cooler Master has been a little slow with the launch of the Eisberg series of all-in-one CPU coolers for as it's taken much longer than expected to get them ready for market. In the meantime, they released their Seidon range of more mainstream liquid coolers which performed well in our tests.

Today we are going to take a look at the Antec GX700 case, which is one of the latest additions to their range of chassis for gamers. Antec have a reputation for producing a variety of affordable cases which have become very popular over the years, including the 300 and 900 which have found massive favour among the gaming audience.

Antec are one of the most established brands in the PC case market and seem to have been around for years. It seems however, that they are keeping a close eye on competition from new entrants to the market like Corsair. After all, the GX700 is a military themed case, similar to the Corsair Vengeance C70. There is a rather large difference in price, though, as the GX700 is aimed at the lower end of the market.

Today we are going to take a look at the Kraken X60 which is NZXT's first attempt at a performance liquid cooler. Over the past few years there have been a number of different companies trying to enter the all-in-one liquid cooling market, following the success of Corsair and Antec. Companies such as Zalman, Cooler Master and now NZXT are all trying to make their mark.

It is quite easy for new companies to enter this market, as most of the products on offer are based on exactly the same technology from Asetek, the company that manufactured the original Corsair H50. As a result, the differences between most of the liquid cooling units can be attributed to the different fans bundled with each unit. That said, Corsair only use Asetek for their budget range and have a number of models based on CoolIT Systems technology.

It doesn't come as a surprise that the Kraken X60 is based on an Asetek design which differentiates itself by incorporating a 280 mm radiator, rather than the 240 mm model adopted by most of the competition. It's therefore very similar to the Corsair H110 which we reviewed recently, which was also based on an Asetek design, featuring a 280 mm radiator.

Features

 • World's first all-in-one 280mm cooler with capacity to mount up to four 140mm fans.
 • High performance pump and copper block with interactive digital fan control.
 • Integrated HUE controlled LED pump cap.
 • Large tower support with extended 16″ tubing and premium black sleeved cables for a clean look and improved airflow.
 • SATA power connector for easy installation and effortless cable management.
 • Completed sealed system backed by a 2 year warranty.

Today we are going to look at the Corsair Hydro H110 which is the latest performance CPU cooler in their range, fitting in just above the H100i. It marks Corsair's response to the NZXT Kraken X60 which utilises a larger 280 mm radiator than the 240 mm unit associated with the existing H100i.

Corsair are widely regarded as the leading enthusiast brand in the ‘all-in-one liquid cooling' market. They have a wide range of products which cater for a broad spectrum of users.

We were recently impressed by their H100i, but many enthusiasts have since been speculating that the Kraken X60 would offer better cooling performance. Unfortunately, we don't have the Kraken X60 available for comparison with the H110 today, however we expect to publish a comprehensive review in the coming weeks.

Specification

 • Cold Plate Material: Copper
 • Fan Specification: 140 mm (x2)
 • Socket Support: AMD AM2/AM3/FM1/FM2 Intel LGA 1155/1156/1366/2011
 • Radiator Material: Aluminium
 • Tubing: Low-evaporation, easy-bend tubing is guaranteed leak-free

Today we are going to look at one of Corsair's latest liquid CPU coolers, the H55. This is an improved version of the existing H50 cooler which is popular with those looking for a high performance cooler at a very reasonable price point. We look forward to seeing how it fares in our tests.

We have recently looked at a number of coolers from Corsair's Hydro series and have been very impressed with what they have to offer. The H55, is based on an Asetek design which is shared by the Antec Kuhler models. The H60, H80i and H100i all share a different basic design as they are made by CoolIT Systems.

The post Silverstone Fortress FT03 Mini Case Review first appeared on KitGuru.]]>

It would be fair to say that over the past couple of years we've seen some very interesting chassis design innovations from Silverstone. They haven't been afraid to think outside the box and have come up with some very impressive cases in the process. For example, the Silverstone Fortress FT02 and Raven RV02 which both feature vertical airflow designs rather than the more conventional horizontal design.

Today we are gong to take a look at the Silverstone Fortress FT03 Mini which is a smaller version of the popular Fortress FT03 which was released about a year ago.

This reduction in size means that the FT03 Mini only has room for the smallest components so you will have to combine it with a Mini ITX motherboard and a SFX power supply. This means it is best suited for building a HTPC or small form factor PC rather than a powerful compact gaming systems.

Silverstone Fortress FT03 Features

 • Super mini footprint design with no cables and vents on four sides
 • Ample space for CPU cooling (78mm in height)
 • Elevated standoff for motherboard back side components
 • Includes 140mm Air Penetrator fan and support entry level liquid cooling
 • Support for two 2.5” SSD/hard drives and one 3.5” hard drive
 • Mini-DTX / Mini-ITX motherboard & SFX PSU compatible
 • Standard-length expansion cards support (10 inches)
