Synology DS211 NAS Review – the ultimate budget NAS?

The DS211 NAS is another fine addition to the Synology portfolio. The throughput is significantly higher than anything else we have tested at this price point, meaning if you need maximum performance at £225 then nothing else comes close.

Synology are clever with their marketing, because while the DS411j is only £40 more expensive than the DS211 and offers twice the storage capacity, it is significantly slower. If you are in the market for maximum storage capacity then the DS411j offers up to 8TB of capacity with solid performance. If you demand ultimate performance then the DS211 offers hugely improved speeds while delivering up to 4TB of storage.

While this product is mainly cast from plastic components, it is well built and the design appeals to us. It would look great in a bedroom or small office environment.

On a software level, the DiskManager 3.0 operating system is continually proving to be the finest on the market. It would be virtually impossible to get this level of multitasking responsiveness within a windows environment with only 256mb of memory installed.

KitGuru says: Again, Synology have adopted a competitive pricing structure with this unit selling in the UK for around £230 inc vat. This is easily the fastest budget NAS system on the market right now, by a clear margin.
