Asustek unveils 27-inch WQHD IPS 120Hz/144Hz display with FreeSync

Asustek Computer has quietly added support of AMD FreeSync technology to its MG279Q gaming display introduced earlier this year. The new monitor, which is already a dream display for gamers, is going to face massive demand when it finally shows up in retail.

The Asus MG279Q 27” monitor is based a high-quality in-plane switching panel with 2560*1440 resolution and 120Hz/144MHz refresh rates. The display features 178° viewing angles and improved colour accuracy thanks to the IPS [in-plane switching] technology. The monitor sports DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort, two HDMI ports and a mobile high-definition link (MHL) 2.0 connectors. The device also integrates a dual-port USB 3.0 hub. AMD announced addition of the FreeSync tech to the display on Wednesday via Twitter.

AMD’s FreeSync technology dynamically synchronizes refresh rates of displays with the frame rate of AMD Radeon graphics adapters to reduce input latency and decrease or fully eliminate visual defects during gaming or video playback. Adding support of AMD FreeSync is relatively easy since it is based on industry-standard panel self-refresh (PSR) technology and does not require any expensive custom hardware.

Even though there are plenty of gaming monitors with 120Hz or 144Hz refresh rates, they hardly ever feature advanced IPS panels with wide viewing angles. In fact, the combination of high resolution, extreme refresh rates and IPS panel already makes the Asus MG279Q a unique display. With the AMD FreeSync technology added, the MG279Q seems to be a nearly perfect monitor for gamers.

Formally introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show 2015, the Asus MG279Q is still not available on the market. Moreover, it is unclear when Asustek Computer plans to finally release the monitor and how much it is set to cost.

Theoretically, the Asus MG279Q is positioned as a mainstream solution that does not carry the ROG brand. However, despite of formal positioning, the Asus MG279Q features a better panel than the Asus PG278Q ROG Swift (with Nvidia’s G-Sync), which retails for £599.99 inc VAT in the U.K. and $779.99 in the U.S.

KitGuru Says: If you are a gamer, who also demands high-quality colour reproduction for your high-definition movies and photos, but cannot afford a large 4K ultra-high-definition monitor, then Asus MG279Q is clearly a display to consider. It features everything one can dream about, it is well made and its only drawbacks are relatively small size a non-UHD resolution.
