Otterbox acquire rival case maker LifeProof

Otterbox, maker of some of the finest protective cases for smartphones has announced their acquisition of LifeProof. No figure was given for the deal.

Otterbox have a well earned reputation for creating some of the finest protective cases that money can buy. My colleague Carl reviewed The Otterbox Defender for the Lumia 920 several months ago and loved it.

The news of the acquisition comes shortly after a lawsuit was filed by Otterbox against LifeProof for patent infringement was dismissed. Otterbox told the North Carolina Business Report that the acquisition was not related to the lawsuit or a settlement. LifeProof are based in San Diego and also make protective cases for smartphones and tablets.

Over the next month Otterbox are going to begin incorporating the LifeProof brand of products into the Otterbox product lineup.

Otterbox employ 650 people worldwide and Lifeproof employ 250 people. The LifeProof staff will remain in the San Diego location for the ‘foreseeable future'.

An announcement was issued which read “Our strategy is to utilize our combined brand momentum, and world-class talent to create a great customer experience that generates OtterBox brand ambassadors for life.”
