Google Cast speaks to your speakers

Today Google announced a new feature called Cast, building upon its existing Chromecast technology. Where Chromecast is specifically for sending video between devices, Cast is going to be used for playing music to compatible speaker systems. It will be possible to send audio from Android, iPhone and iPad devices as well as from the Chrome browser on Windows, Mac and ChromeOS to Google Cast Ready speakers from Denon, Sony and LG.

According to Google, the music that you play from your phone actually streams from the cloud rather than from your device, the benefits of this being that your phone does not have to have a constant connection to the speaker, the music quality is improved and playing music will not have a detrimental effect on your battery life. At the moment only a limited selection of apps appear to be supported with Pandora, TuneIn and Google Play Music being among them. Still this seems to have made the people dancing in the video below happy.

Unfortunately at this time no actual speakers were revealed by Denon, Sony or LG and there are very few details about how the system will work on devices let alone any hints on audio quality. We can assume that the system will function in a similar way to Chromecast and hopefully, we will have some more information on some of the Google Cast Ready speakers before the end of CES.
