Dell rise to number 2 PC maker position, thanks to Apple

Dell have been having a good couple of months, as they rise past Acer to the number 2 position in the world, behind Hewlett Packard.

Analysts have claimed that Acer have been having a tough time, thanks to Apple's iPad success, which has damaged the network and notebook markets in recent months. While the iPad sales will have hurt Dell also, industry experts are saying that Acer have been hit the hardest.

Hewlett Packard are still market leaders, by a considerable margin, although Dell are looking quite healthy right now, with a 12.1% market share. Sadly, the position isn't indicative of any massive growth for Dell, the movement is due to Acer's sales dropping, like a stone. Dell's PC sales held steady between the third and fourth quarter of 2010, however Acer's sunk by 12.9 percent, which is worrying.

“A little more than one year after a prolonged decline in shipments caused Dell to lose its customary second-place ranking to rival Acer, Dell now seems to have regained a firm hold on the No. 2 rank,” said Matthew Wilkins, an analyst at IHS.

He continued “Acer in the third quarter of 2009 had surged to the No. 2 spot on the strength of its strong sales of netbook PCs to consumers and a generally buoyant consumer market, However, with momentum for consumer PCs waning and in light of growing competition from media tablets, Acer's gains have been reversed.”

KitGuru says: Can Acer bounce back? With Apple selling over 500,000 iPad 2's this weekend it doesn't look too good for the netbook market in 2011.
