Samsung think it’s figured out 5G

While Everything Everywhere and other mobile providers have been keen to push their 4G offerings on customers with big data habits, Samsung has apparently already figured out the next-generation of wireless data transfer, naming it cleverly: 5G.

The speeds are huge too. This is beyond WiFi and even faster than a lot of fibre connections, with Samsung suggesting that it could be as fast as 100 times current 4G speeds. This would allow “a wide range of services such as 3D movies and games, real-time streaming of ultra high-definition content, and remote medical services,” said a spokesperson in an announcement.

5g
Samsung's 5G tech has so far been able to transmit data at 1.056 Gbps at a distance or nearly 1.5 miles.

Don't look for it in your next handset though. Samsung expects the technology to be commercialised by 2020. The reason for this is that the bugs need to be ironed out and it needs to be made effective over a longer distance. As it stands, the millimetre band frequency used to transmit at such high data rates, is only capable of transmission over 2KM.

However, Samsung isn't the only company to be working on 5G technology, with China's government creating its own research group back in 2012 and the European Commission has also invested 50 million Euros this year, to help fund 5G services in the future. Samsung officials believe that these efforts could be combined in the next few years, though that seems very anti-capitalist for an increasingly commerce driving world and in such a competitive market as mobile phone technology.

KitGuru Says: I think it's more likely that a patent war will kick off than big companies and governments working together.
