SATA-IO completes SATA 3.2 Specification

The Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO) has announced that it has completed the SATA 3.2 Specification. The latest iteration of the specification brings with it increased data transfer rates, improved power management and SATA Express.

Since its conception in 2004 users have been reaping the rewards of open industry standards.

SATA Express will allow drives to use two lanes of PCI Express 3.0, increasing available bandwidth to 2GB/s for high-end SSDs. At the same time, slower drives can still use SATA 6Gbps.

The 3.2 Specification also brings with it DevSleep functionality. DevSleep will enable systems to almost completely shut down the drive and instantly switch on again, making it an ideal solution for Ultrabooks and low-power systems.

New industry standards always require some time before they are available at an affordable price. However, given the new specification's improvements we are expecting the first high-end products featuring SATA 3.2 to appear in late 2014.

KitGuru says: Intel will undoubtedly be pleased with the improved power management functions for Ultrabooks, as will AMD for its low-power APUs.
