Verizon intro 150Mbps broadband

Verizon Communications have launched a new service for Flos customers which delivers 150Mbps download speeds and uploads up to 35 Mbps.

Verizon announced last night in the US that consumers in their Fios fiber to the home territory can avail of the new service. Small business customers are also on the cards to get access to the super fast service by the end of 2010.

Verizon have said that these high broadband speeds are necessary as more Americans adopt bandwidth intensive activities such as 3D video streaming.

Eric Bruno, Verizon vice president of product management, said “By offering the fastest mass-market Internet service in the nation, we're supporting the immediate and future speed needs of bandwidth-hungry consumers, The new 150/35 Mbps FiOS Internet offer establishes a new benchmark for high-speed Internet in America and paves the way for a flurry of emerging bandwidth-intensive applications to reach mainstream status.”

The Federal Communications Commission has set a goal to try to get 100Mbps connections to 100 million homes over the next ten years, which is going to be difficult to achieve. Fios broadband is a good start however as it can reach 12.5 million people and expansion by the end of the year means it will be available to over 18 million customers.

KitGuru says: The UK meanwhile lags significantly behind with very few companies even reaching 50Mbps speeds. Let's hope that changes in 2011 although we aren't holding our breath.
