Hands-on with Corsair’s new RMx Shift power supply

Corsair has done something dramatic with the design of their new Corsair RMx Shift ATX 3.0 power supply, by shifting the connectors from the end to the side. While that ‘Shift' play on words is an awful pun it is also an accurate description that is illustrated in our video.

We built a test system to give the Corsair RM1200x Shift a trial run using the following parts:

Processor: Intel Core i5-13600K
CPU Cooler: Corsair H150i Elite
Motherboard: MSI MPG Z790 Carbon WiFi
Memory: 32GB Kingston Fury Renegade DDR5-6000
SSD: Sabrent Rocket 4.0 M.2 NVMe
Graphics card: Gigabyte RTX 4080 16GB Gaming OC
Power supply: Corsair RM1200x Shift Gold
Case: Core 5000D Airflow
OS: Windows 11

Our initial conclusions are that you have to mount the PSU with the fan facing downwards and that you require a reasonable amount of space behind the right hand panel of your case. Neither of these points should pose a problem with enthusiast hardware but even so you should bear them in mind. While we very much like Corsair RMx Shift it is true to say it does not bring any earth-shaking changes to your PC build. Having said that, we are confident Corsair will produce new cases that take full advantage of this new family of power supplies, possibly with a new set of braided cables to match.
