In light of the new Apple TV 4K hitting shelves tomorrow, Nvidia is stepping up its game by announcing a price drop to its own 4K media box. The Shield TV comes in at the same $179 price as Apple’s iteration, bundled with a remote and will play nicely for anyone already wrapped up in the Android ecosystem.
The new configuration isn’t too different from the old Shield TV, instead shifting focus from its gaming roots by dropping the bundled controller, to concentrate on streamers and content consumers. It comes in at the same amount of storage, sitting at 16GB alongside housing 4K and HDR compatibility.
While in direct competition with the Apple TV 4K, the Shield TV boasts Dolby Atmos surround sound, which Apple says will come to its device in a future update but currently is missing from its feature list.
Nvidia has also expanded its offering of applications in the UK, adding CHILI Cinema alongside mainstays such as Netflix, Amazon Video, Plex, Kodi and more. CHILI Cinema enables users to watch films just weeks after their cinema release, as well as some of the latest TV shows. The best thing about this app is that you pay for what you watch, meaning it won’t add to your growing list of subscriptions. In the future, the application will eventually allow for the purchase of cinema tickets and merchandise directly.
The new Nvidia Shield TV bundle won’t hit shelves until October 18th but preorders start from today directly from the website or select Currys PC World stores. The original Shield TV offerings will still be available for those more interested in the Shield TV’s gaming or media server capabilities.
