Star Citizen’s single player campaign won’t be at CitizenCon

Since its delay back in in 2016, Star Citizen fans have been awaiting news on the anticipated single-player campaign, with many expecting an update at this month’s CitizenCon. Unfortunately, the wait will be a little longer according to the developer as Cloud Imperium Games will focus on Squadron 42 later this year.

Squadron 42 was announced alongside Star Citizen as the single player campaign taking cues from the widely renown Wing Commander series in its narrative style to the enhanced experience brought about by actors like Gary Oldman and veteran of the Wing Commander series, Mark Hamill.

“We have a large team working on Squadron 42 and we’ve been making good progress towards achieving my goal to take the Wing Commander style narrative experience to the next level with first person gameplay that moves between foot, vehicles and incredible locations all rendered with a fluidity and quality that you normally only see in pre-rendered cinematic scenes,” explains Chris Roberts, director of Star Citizen. “I am confident it is going to be worth the wait; a game that can hold its own with any other AAA story game.”

Squadron 42's opening cinematic released in 2015.

Currently, Squadron 42 has 28 chapters planned, which is approximately 60+ missions, padded with about 20 hours’ worth of motion capture. The development of Squadron 42 is directly tied to that of Star Citizen with both sharing a large amount of technology and content that cross over. “Subsumption is an example of technology that is critical for both Star Citizen and Squadron 42,” continued Roberts. “The Item 2.0 refactor and the Player Interaction Mode were essential for Star Citizen and it is now allowing new and varied gameplay in Squadron 42. Planet Tech, the Zone System and 64-bit precision allows us to expand the playscape for Squadron 42 to solar system scale.”

While the public release date for this content is still very much in the wind, such is the common way regarding release dates of the ambitious project, Roberts expressed that he is “excited to show you some of this in December.”

In the meantime, players of the core Star Citizen experience have the alpha build 3.0 update to look forward to as it has just entered private testing, which will also be featured during CitizenCon which lands on Friday 27th October.

KitGuru Says: It looks like lots of Star Citizen news is on the way! Hopefully Squadron 42 has come a long way since its opening cinematic released two years ago. What are you more excited for, Star Citizen or its Squadron 42 counterpart?
