Epic Games acquires Quixel and its respective 3D asset library and tools

Epic Games has announced the acquisition of Quixel, the creator of a photogrammetry asset library and bundled toolset. The financial details regarding this purchase have not been shared.

Quixel is a startup focused on 3D asset collection and respective toolsets. The company was created back in 2011, and currently has over 100 employees in six countries, with headquarters in both Sweden and Pakistan. Quixel's main product is Megascans, the asset library containing over 10000 2D and 3D photogrammetry assets. Besides Megascans, there are two other applications: Bridge, used to import assets to engines and renderers, and Mixer, a material creation software.

With the acquisition of Quixel, Epic Games will make the Megascans library free for all Unreal Engine users. Today, Epic shared ten high-resolution packs at the Unreal Engine Marketplace, alongside assets used in the “Rebirth” cinematic short made by Quixel, in Unreal Engine 4. At a future date, Epic Games will make more asset packs available for free in its UE Marketplace.

Quixel's “Rebirth” cinematic was shared with the public back in March, at GDC 2019’s State of Unreal. The cinematic was made using assets from Megascans imported into UE4. However, Megascans assets have also been used in big budget productions. AAA videogames such as Metro Exodus, Destiny 2, and Battlefield V, as well as blockbusters like The Jungle Book, Black Panther, The Lion King, and Pacific Rim: Uprising, have all used the Megascans library.

KitGuru says: The Megascans library has been used alongside Unreal Engine 4 for quite some time. With this acquisition, creative professionals that have been using both pieces of software together will surely appreciate the free assets from Quixel. Did you know of Quixel or have you used any of its applications before?
