Spyro: A Realm Beyond announced as studio hopes to make “many new games” in the future

Unlike Crash Bandicoot, Spyro has seen much smaller of a resurgence in recent years, with the only ‘new’ title being 2018’s Reignited Trilogy remake. Fortunately fans of the purple dragon were treated to a welcome surprise during Xbox’s game showcase with the official announcement of Spyro: A Realm Beyond. Being developed by Toys For Bob, the studio hopes that this will mark the beginning of a long-running Spyro revival.

Officially announced during Microsoft’s Xbox Game Showcase, Spyro: A Realm Beyond is the first original entry in this series in almost two-decades, with the last mainline release being the ill-received ‘Dawn of the Dragon’.

While details on the new project remain light, it appears as though this 2027 title is designed to mark the return of Spyro into the limelight.

Spyro: A Realm Beyond Toys For Bob

Taking part in an interview conducted by the publication GamesRadar+, Toys For Bob studio head Paul Yan spoke on the future of the Spyro franchise, stating:

“Our goal is that we want Spyro to live on for a long time. We want not just one new game, but many new games. We hope that this is the first of many. So we're going to have to take some risks. We're going to have to move into new territory, and our goal is to make sure that that evolution is always speaking to something that is authentic and reverential to building on the foundation of what is truly Spyro, and then we'll take some leaps.”

What these risks and leaps are, we have yet to find out, with the official announcement being little more than a cinematic teaser. That said, Toys For Bob have managed to successfully revive other mascot platformers while still evolving the formula, and so hopefully A Realm Beyond marks the beginning of Spyro’s grand return.
