Report suggests that PS4 will outsell Xbox One 40% by 2019

A new report from Strategy Analytics claims that the PlayStation 4 will maintain its strong lead over the Xbox One, outselling Microsoft's console by 40 per cent by 2019. The results of the study were released this week, predicting sales figures for both consoles over the next four years.

According to the Connected Home Devices report, Sony's latest console will sell around 80 million units by 2019, while Microsoft's effort will sell 57 million. Additionally, the Xbox One and PS4 are apparently close to the peak of their life cycle right now, but there is still room for modest growth beyond 2019.

This is all assuming that this console generation will even last beyond 2019. Some industry figures have already predicted that the new console life cycle will be much shorter than the last.

Sony already shipped 18.5 million PlayStation 4 consoles in its first year, while the Xbox One managed around 10 million units, following a very successful holiday season. According to Strategy Analytics, the PlayStation 4 could be on track to repeat the success of the PS2, which was one of the most successful consoles of all time.

KitGuru Says: Both Microsoft and Sony's latest consoles are selling very well. Sony has maintained a solid lead though and it is unlikely that the company will lose it. However, Microsoft has improved its chances thanks to dropping Kinect and heavily focusing on what its customers want, not to mention the heavy amount of promotional deals.
