While developers can get their hands on the Hololens already, it is still a long way off for consumers. Microsoft will be launching the Hololens when it is properly ready, following the negative reception many users had to the Kinect, which did not end up working as well as many had hoped.
This information comes from Microsoft's Alex Kipman (via: Gamasutra), who said that selling the Kinect was “not a pleasant experience”.
Speaking during a TED conference this week, Kipman also went on to say that the consumer version of the Hololens will be held back: “If a consumer bought it today, they would have 12 things to do with it. And they would say ‘Cool, I bought a $3,000 product that I can do 12 things with and now it is collecting dust.”
The consumer version of the Hololens would also likely have to come down in price. In the mean time, though, approved developers can still grab one for $3000.
KitGuru Says: Microsoft's Hololens is exciting technology but it is going to be a while before it hits consumers. Have any of you been following the Hololens since its announcement? Would you buy one once its available?
