Spider-Man Remastered upgrades detailed; including revamped characters

Sony stirred up some controversy recently when the console manufacturer announced that its PlayStation 5 remaster of the much-loved Marvel’s Spider-Man would not be offered for free to those who already own the game on PS4. Players would instead have to purchase the Ultimate Edition of the upcoming Miles Morales in order to obtain it. While the decision may not sit well with some fans, Insomniac Games has now detailed exactly what has been improved with the remaster – and it’s a lot.

Revealing the details on the PlayStation blog, Insomniac Games announced “Beyond improved models and materials, one of the biggest things we have brought to the game is ray-traced reflections and ambient shadows. We now have true reflections on the windows of buildings, and it looks stunning with our new skies and weather.”

Furthermore, “our characters have also gotten a huge upgrade. From higher fidelity skin, eye, and teeth shaders to individually-rendered strands of hair, the new tech and detail brings our characters and their performances to new life.”

This then leads on to one of the biggest changes with the PS5 remaster: Peter Parker’s face (a comparison of which can be seen above). Completely remodelled using a different actor for Peter’s face, Insomniac Games explained “We loved working with John Bubniak on the original game; however, to get a better match to Peter Parker/Spider-Man actor Yuri Lowenthal’s facial capture, we have cast Ben Jordan to be the face model for Peter Parker on the PS5 console. He looks incredible in-game, and Yuri’s moving performances take on a new life.”

Other major improvements include 60fps gameplay (seen above), “near-instant loading” (though the fun fast travel subway cutscenes can be added back in if desired), “Spatial 3D Audio on compatible headphones, and the revolutionary DualSense controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers”. Furthermore, the already great photo mode has been improved with new dynamic lighting options. Last but not least, Spider-Man’s suit from The Amazing Spider-Man film has also been added, allowing you to now play as all three live-action Spider-Men.

Whether or not you agree with the $20 premium required to obtain the Spider-Man remaster, there is no denying that Insomniac Games has put a great deal of work in to make 2018’s Spider-Man even better.
